all'errore - Prima serie
A verb is a kind of word (see part of speech) that usually tells about an action or a state and is the main part of a sentence. Un verbo è un genere di parola (vedere parte del discorso) che solitamente racconta un'azione o uno stato ed è la parte principale di una frase. Every sentence has a verb. Ogni frase ha un verbo. In English, verbs are the only kind of word that changes to show past or present tense. In inglese, i verbi sono l'unico genere di parola che cambia per indicare il passato o presente indicativo. 1] Every language in the world has verbs, but they are not always used in the same ways. Ogni lingua del mondo ha i verbi, ma non si trovano sempre nello stesso modo. They also can have different properties in different languages. Inoltre possono avere proprietà diverse nelle diverse lingue. For example, in some other languages (e.g., Chinese & Indonesian) verbs do not change for past and present tense. Ad esempio, in alcune altre lingue (ad es., cinese & indonesiano) verbi non cambia per il passato e il presente indicativo. This means the definition above only works well for English verbs. Questo significa che la definizione sopra solo funziona bene per i verbi inglesi. There are sixteen verbs used in Basic English. Ci sono sedici i verbi usati in inglese di base. They are: be, do, have, come, go, see, seem, give, take, keep, make, put, send, say, let, get. Essi sono: essere, fare, hanno, venire, andare, vedere, sembrano, dare, prendere, tenere, fare, mettere, inviare, dire, lasciare, ottenere. The word 'verb' La parola 'verbo' The word verb originally comes from *were-, a Proto-Indo-European word meaning "a word". Il verbo parola proviene originariamente da * erano-, una proto-parola che significa "una parola". It comes to English through the Latin verbum and the Old French verbe. Si tratta di italiano attraverso il latino verbum e le verbe antico francese. Verbal phrase Sintagma verbale In simple sentences, the verb may be one word: The cat sat on the mat. In semplici frasi, il verbo può essere una sola parola: il gatto seduto sul tappetino. However, the verb may be a whole phrase: The cat will sit on the mat. Tuttavia, il verbo può essere una frase intera: il gatto si sederà sul tappetino. Verbal phrases can be extremely difficult to analyse: I'm afraid I will need to be going soon. Frasi verbali possono essere estremamente difficile da analizzare: temo che dovrò andare presto. There seem to be three verbal phrases here, which add to something like Sorry, I must go soon. Sembrano esserci tre frasi verbali qui, che si aggiungono a qualcosa come mi dispiace, devo andare presto. Verb forms Forme verbali In English and many other languages, verbs change their form. In inglese e in molte altre lingue, i verbi cambiano la loro forma. This is called inflection. Questo è chiamato flesso. Most English verbs have six inflected forms (see the table), but be has eight different forms. Verbi inglesi più hanno sei forme flesse (vedi tabella), ma essere ha otto diverse forme. Forms of English verbs Forme dei verbi inglesi You should notice that some of the verb forms look the same. Si dovrebbe notare che alcune delle forme di verbo lo stesso aspetto. You can say they have the same shape. Si può dire che hanno la stessa forma. For example, the plain present and the plain form of walk have the same shape. Ad esempio, la pianura presente e forma normale di a piedi hanno la stessa forma. The same is true for the past and the past participle. Lo stesso vale per il passato e il participio passato. But these different forms can have different shapes in other verbs. Ma queste forme differenti possono avere diverse forme in altri verbi. For example, the plain present of be is usually are but the plain form is be. Per esempio, il presente semplice di essere è solitamente sono, ma la forma normale è essere. Also, the past of eat is ate, but the past participle is eaten. Inoltre, il passato di mangiare è mangiato, ma il participio passato è mangiato. When you look for a verb in the dictionary, it is usually the plain form that you look for. Quando cercate un verbo nel dizionario, è solitamente la forma piana che cercate. An English sentence must have at least one primary-form verb. Una frase inglese deve avere almeno un verbo forme primarie. Each main clause can only have one primary-form verb. Ogni clausola principale può avere solo uno verbo forme primarie. Kinds of Verbs Tipi di verbi English has two main kinds of verbs: normal verbs (called lexical verbs) and auxiliary verbs. Inglese ha due principali tipi di verbi: i verbi normali (detti verbi lessicali) e verbi ausiliari. The difference between them is mainly in where they can go in a sentence. La differenza tra loro è principalmente in cui possono andare in una frase. Some verbs are in both groups, but there are very few auxiliary verbs in English. Alcuni verbi sono in entrambi i gruppi, ma ci sono molto pochi i verbi ausiliari in inglese. There are also two kinds of auxiliary verbs: modal verbs and non-modal verbs. Ci sono anche due tipi di verbi ausiliari: verbi modali e non modali verbi. The table below shows most of the English auxiliaries and a small number of other verbs. La tabella sotto mostra la maggior parte di ausiliari inglese e un piccolo numero di altri verbi. Kinds of English verbs Tipi di verbi inglesi There are several auxiliary verbs: Ci sono diversi verbi ausiliari: ▪ To do (do, does, did) Fare (, fa, ha fatto) ▪ To be (am, is, are, was, were): Creates a progressive tense Essere (sto, è, sono, stato, erano): crea una progressiva tesa ▪ To have (have, has, had): Creates a perfect tense Avere (ha, ha, ha avuto): crea un perfekt The follow verbs are modal auxiliaries I verbi di seguire sono ausiliari modali ▪ Can Può ▪ Could Potrebbe ▪ May Maggio ▪ Might Potrebbe ▪ Must Deve ▪ Shall Deve ▪ Should Dovrebbe Auxiliary verbs also inflect for negation. I verbi ausiliari si declinano anche per negazione. Usually this is done by adding not or n't. Di solito questo viene fatto aggiungendo non o n' t. 1] ▪ You shouldn't be here. Non dovrebbe essere qui. ▪ He isn't at home. Egli non è a casa. ▪ We haven't started yet. Noi non abbiamo ancora iniziato.
Use of the auxiliary do Uso dell'ausiliaria do Sometimes the verb do. A volte il verbo fare. It does not really change the meaning. Non realmente cambia il significato. ▪ I do talk (Present) Parlo (presente) ▪ I did go (Past) Sono andato (passato) It is also used in the negative when no other auxiliary verbs are used. È utilizzato anche in senso negativo quando nessun altri verbi ausiliari sono usati. ▪ I don't talk (Present) Non parlo (presente) ▪ I didn't go (Past) Non sono andato (passato) Many other languages do not use the verb do as an auxiliary verb. Molte altre lingue non usare il verbo do come un verbo ausiliare. They use the simple present for do, and the simple past or perfect for 'did Usano il semplice presente per fare e l'imperfetto o perfetto per ' Tense, aspect, and mood Tesa, aspetto e l'umore Many people think that all different ways of using verbs are all different tenses. Molte persone pensano che tutti i diversi modi di utilizzo dei verbi sono tutti diversi tempi. This is not true. Questo non è vero. There are three main systems related to the verb: tense, aspect, and mood. Ci sono tre principali sistemi correlati al verbo: indicativo, aspetto e stato d'animo. Tense Tesa Tense is mainly used to say when the verb happens: in the past, present, or future. Tesa è principalmente usato per dire quando il verbo succede: in passato, presente o futuro. In order to explain and understand tense, it is useful to imagine time as a line on which past tense, present tense and future tense are positioned. Al fine di spiegare e capire tesa, è utile immaginare il tempo come una linea su cui sono posizionati il passato, presente e futuro. Some languages have all three tenses, some have only two, and some have no tenses at all. Alcune lingue hanno tutti e tre i tempi, alcuni hanno solo due, e alcuni non hanno tempi verbali a tutti. English and Japanese for example have only two tenses: past and present. Italiano e giapponese per esempio ha solo due tempi verbali: passato e presente. Chinese and Indonesian verbs do not show tense. 1] Verbi cinesi e indonesiani non mostrano tesa. Instead they use other words in the sentence to show when the verb happens. Invece usano altre parole nella frase per mostrare quando accade il verbo. English tenses Tempi verbali inglesi Aspect Aspetto Aspect usually shows us things like whether the action is finished or not, or if something happens regularly. Aspetto solitamente ci mostra le cose come se l'azione è finita o no, o se qualcosa succede regolarmente. English has two aspects: progressive and perfect. Inglese ha due aspetti: progressiva e perfetto. In English, aspect is usually shown by using participle verb forms. In inglese, aspetto è solitamente indicato utilizzando forme di verbo participio. Aspect can combine with present or past tense. Aspetto può combinare con presente o al passato. Progressive aspect Aspetto progressivo English uses the gerund-participle, usually together with the auxiliary be (and its forms am, is, are, was, and were) to show the progressive aspect. Inglese utilizza il participio-gerundio, solitamente insieme con l'ausiliare essere (e sue forme sono, è, sono, era e sono stati) per mostrare l'aspetto progressivo. ▪ I'm sleeping. (present progressive) Sto dormendo. (presente progressivo) ▪ He was studying English last night. (past progressive) Stava studiando inglese ieri sera. (passato prossimo progressivo) ▪ He will be going to the store tomorrow (future progressive) Egli sarà andare al negozio domani (futuro progressivo) Many other languages, such as French, do not use progressive tenses. Molte altre lingue, come francese, non utilizzano tempi progressivi. They use the simple present instead of the present progressive; and the imperfect instead of the past progressive. Usano il presente semplice invece il presente progressivo; e l'imperfetto invece il passato progressivo. Perfect aspect Aspetto perfetto English uses the past participle, usually together with the auxiliary have to show the perfect aspect. Inglese usa il participio passato, solitamente insieme con l'ausiliare avere per mostrare l'aspetto perfetto. ▪ I've seen him twice. (present perfect) Ho visto due volte. (present perfect) ▪ I had lived there for three years. (past perfect) Avevo vissuto lì per tre anni. (past perfect) The past perfect can be used to express an unrealized hope, wish, etc. Il passato prossimo può essere utilizzato per esprimere una speranza ad esigibilità differita, desiderio, ecc. ▪ He had intended to bake a cake but ran out of flour. Egli intendeva far cuocere una torta, ma a corto di farina. ▪ She had wanted to buy him a gift but he refused. Lei aveva voluto comprare lui un regalo, ma egli rifiutò. After If, wish and would rather, the past perfect can be used to talk about past events that never happened. Dopo se, desiderio e sarebbe piuttosto, il passato prossimo può essere utilizzato per parlare di eventi passati che non è mai successo. ▪ If only I had been born standing up! Se solo avessi stato nato in piedi! ▪ I wish you had told me that before. Vorrei che mi aveva detto che prima. ▪ I would rather you had gone somewhere else. Piuttosto si era andato da qualche altra parte.
Mood Stato d'animo Finally, English mood is now usually shown by using modal verbs. Infine, umore italiano ora è solitamente indicato utilizzando i verbi modali. In the past, English had a full mood system but that has almost completely disappeared. In passato, inglese aveva un sistema completo di umore, ma che è quasi completamente scomparsa. The subjunctive mood now uses the plain form. Il modo congiuntivo ora utilizza la forma normale. There is also a form of be that is used in conditionals to show that something is not true (e.g., If I were a bird, I would fly to California.) C'è anche una forma di essere utilizzato in espressioni condizionali per dimostrare che qualcosa non è vero (ad es., se fossi un uccello, vorrei volare in California.) Sentence parts that go with verbs Parti di frase che vanno con i verbi Certain parts of a sentence naturally come before verbs or after them, but these are not always the same for all verbs. Alcune parti di una frase vengono naturalmente prima di verbi o dopo di loro, ma questi non sono sempre gli stessi per tutti i verbi. The main sentence parts are: subject, object, complement, and modifier. Le parti di frase principale sono: soggetto, oggetto, complemento e modificatore. Subjects Soggetti Almost all English sentences have subjects, but sentences that are orders (called imperatives) usually do not have any subjects. Quasi tutte le frasi inglesi sono soggetti, ma frasi che di solito sono ordini (chiamati imperativi) non hanno alcun soggetti. A subject usually comes before a verb, but it can also come after auxiliary verbs. Un soggetto viene di solito prima di un verbo, ma può anche venire dopo i verbi ausiliari. In the following examples, the subject is underlined and the primary verb is in bold. Negli esempi seguenti, viene sottolineato il soggetto e il verbo principale è in grassetto. ▪ We need you. Abbiamo bisogno di voi. ▪ The food was good. Il cibo era buono. ▪ The small boy with red hair is sleeping. Il piccolo ragazzo con i capelli rossi sta dormendo. ▪ Can you see the car? Potete vedere l'auto? ▪ Come here. (no subject) Vieni qui. (nessun oggetto)
Objects Oggetti Many verbs can be followed by an object. Molti verbi possono essere seguiti da un oggetto. These verbs are called transitive verbs. Questi verbi sono chiamati verbi transitivi. In fact, some verbs must have an object (e.g., take), but some verbs never take an object (e.g., sleep). Infatti, alcuni verbi devono avere un oggetto (ad esempio, prendere), ma alcuni verbi mai prendono un oggetto (ad esempio, dormire). Verbs that do not take an object are called intransitive verbs. I verbi che non accettano un oggetto sono detti verbi intransitivi. Some verbs can even have two objects. Alcuni verbi possono avere anche due oggetti. They are called ditransitive verbs. Si chiamano verbi intransitivi. In the following examples, the object is underlined and the primary verb is in bold. Negli esempi seguenti, l'oggetto viene sottolineato e il verbo principale è in grassetto. ▪ I'm sleeping. (no object) Sto dormendo. (nessun oggetto) ▪ I took the book from him. Ho preso il libro da lui. ▪ I gave him the book. (2 objects) Gli ho dato il libro. (2 oggetti) ▪ I am happy. (no object) Sono felice. (nessun oggetto) ▪ I became a teacher. (complement, no object) Sono diventato un insegnante. (nessun oggetto, complemento) ▪ I slept in my bed (1 object) Ho dormito nel mio letto (1 oggetto)
Complements Complementi Some verbs can or must be followed by a complement. Alcuni verbi possono o devono essere seguiti da un complemento. These verbs are called linking verbs or copula. Questi verbi sono chiamati verbi linking o copula. In the following examples, the complement is underlined and the verb is in bold. Negli esempi seguenti, il complemento è sottolineato e il verbo è in grassetto. ▪ He is good. Egli è buono. ▪ He is a boy. Lui è un ragazzo. ▪ She became sick. Lei si ammalò. ▪ She became a manager. Lei è diventato un manager. ▪ It looks nice. Sembra bello.
Modifiers Modificatori Verbs can be modified by various modifiers, mainly adverbs. I verbi possono essere modificati da vari modificatori, soprattutto gli avverbi. Note that verbs generally do not need modifiers; it's usually a choice. Nota che i verbi in genere non è necessario modificatori; di solito è una scelta. In the following examples, the adverb is underlined and the verb is in bold. Negli esempi seguenti, è sottolineata l'avverbio e il verbo è in grassetto. ▪ The boy ran quickly. Il ragazzo correva velocemente. ▪ The freely swinging rope hit him. La corda liberamente oscillante lo ha colpito. Verbs also commonly take a variety of other modifiers including prepositions. Verbi prendono anche comunemente una varietà di altri modificatori comprese le preposizioni. Differences between verbs and other kinds of words Differenze tra verbi e altri tipi di parole Sometimes a verb and another word can have the same shape. A volte un verbo e un altro parola può avere la stessa forma. In these cases you can usually see the difference by looking at various properties of the words. In questi casi di solito si può vedere la differenza guardando varie proprietà delle parole. Verbs vs. adjectives Verbi e aggettivi Sometimes a verb and an adjective can have the same shape. A volte un verbo e un aggettivo può avere la stessa forma. Usually this happens with participles. Di solito questo accade con i participi. For example, the present participle interesting and the adjective interesting look the same. Ad esempio, il participio presente interessante e l'aggettivo interessante lo stesso aspetto. Verbs are different from adjectives, though, because they cannot be modified by very, more, or most. I verbi sono diversi dagli aggettivi, però, perché non si può essere modificati da molto, più, o la maggior parte. For example, you can say "That is very interesting," so you know interesting is an adjective here. 1] Ad esempio, si può dire "Che è molto interessante," così sai interessante è un aggettivo qui. But you cannot say "My teacher is very interesting me in math" because in this sentence interesting is a verb. Ma non si può dire "la mia insegnante è molto interessante me in matematica" perché in questa frase interessante è un verbo. On the other hand, if you cannot change the 'be' verb to 'seem' or 'become', it is probably a verb. D'altra parte, se non è possibile modificare il verbo 'essere' per 'sembrano' o 'divenire', è probabilmente un verbo. ▪ He was isolated / He became isolated (isolated is an adjective) È stato isolato / divenne isolato (isolato è un aggettivo) ▪ The door was opening / *The door became opening (opening is a verb) Stava aprendo la porta / * la porta si è trasformato in apertura (apertura è un verbo) Verbs vs. nouns Verbi vs sostantivi The gerund-particle sometimes looks like a noun. Gerundio-particella appare a volte come un sostantivo. This is especially true when it is used as a subject, as in the following example: Questo è particolarmente vero quando è usato come soggetto, come nell'esempio seguente: ▪ Running is good for you. Esecuzione è buono per voi. The main differences between these verbs and nouns are: modifiers, number, and object/complement Le principali differenze tra questi verbi e sostantivi vengono: modificatori, numero e oggetto/complemento Modifiers Modificatori Verbs cannot generally be modified by adjectives and nouns cannot generally be modified by adverbs. I verbi in genere non possono essere modificati da aggettivi e sostantivi in genere non possono essere modificati da avverbi. So, in "Running regularly is good for you", running is a verb because it is modified by regularly, an adverb. Così, in "Running regolarmente è buono per te", correre è un verbo perché è modificato da regolarmente, un avverbio. Number Numero Verbs cannot change for number, so if you can make the word plural, it is a noun, not a verb. Non è possibile modificare i verbi per numero, quindi se si può fare la parola plurale, è un sostantivo, non un verbo. For example, "this drawing is nice" can change to "these drawings are nice", so drawing is a noun. Ad esempio, "questo disegno è bello" può cambiare a "questi disegni sono bello", così il disegno è un sostantivo. But "drawing trees is fun" cannot change to "drawings trees is fun", so it is a verb here. Ma "disegno alberi è divertimento" non è possibile modificare a "disegni alberi è divertente", quindi è un verbo qui. Object/complement Oggetto/complemento Many verbs can take objects or complements, but nouns cannot. Molti verbi possono prendere oggetti o complementi, ma non i sostantivi. So, in "parking the car is hard", parking is a verb because it takes the object the car. 1] Così, in «parcheggio l'auto è difficile», il parcheggio è un verbo perché prende l'oggetto automobile. But, if you say, "there's no parking", parking may be a noun because it does not have an object. Ma, se si dice, "non non c'è nessun parcheggio", parcheggio può essere un sostantivo, perché non dispone di un oggetto. Verbs vs. prepositions Verbi vs preposizioni Some verbs have become prepositions. Alcuni verbi sono diventate le preposizioni. Again, usually these share a shape with participles. 1] Ancora una volta, di solito queste condividono una forma con i participi. Here are some examples: Ecco alcuni esempi: ▪ Given the problems, I do not think we should go. Visti i problemi, non credo che dovremmo andare. ▪ We have many helpers, including John. Abbiamo molti collaboratori, tra cui John. ▪ According to the map, we are here. Secondo la mappa, noi siamo qui. ▪ He went to hospital following the fight. Si recò in ospedale dopo la lotta.
The main
difference between verbs and prepositions is that verbs have a subject.
La principale differenza tra i verbi e preposizioni è che i verbi hanno un
soggetto. Even if the subject is not written, you can understand what it
is. Anche se il soggetto non è scritto, si può
capire quello che è. Prepositions do not have a subject.
Le preposizioni non hanno un soggetto.
