Primo maggio
May Day

Questa mattina ho partecipato alla manifestazione del Primo maggio a Torino, tra le sigle dei sindacati e le maestranze, in una città simbolo dello sviluppo industriale del nostro Paese.
This morning, together with the trade unions and the workers of this Country, I took part in the May Day celebrations in Turin, a city that stands as the symbol of this Country’s industrial development.

Oggi più che una festa è un’occasione per ricordare allo Stato, e a chi lo rappresenta, che il lavoro è un diritto inalienabile dei cittadini.
More than merely a celebration, today is in fact an opportunity for us to remind the Government, and those who represent it, of the fact that the right to work is an inalienable right of every citizen.

Dedico questa giornata agli oltre cento lavoratori, come testimonia il documento inviatomi da un rappresentante dei lavoratori per la sicurezza sul lavoro, Marco Bazzoni, che da inizio anno hanno perso la vita nell’affermazione di questo diritto.
I would like to dedicate today to the more than one hundred workers that, according to the document sent to me by Marco Bazzoni, a worker representative for workplace safety, have lost their lives since the beginning of this year in the expression of this right.

Text of my interview in Turin

Antonio Di Pietro: Per noi dell’Italia dei Valori, in questo anno, c’è stato un impegno prioritario in difesa di chi non ha più il lavoro, di chi non lo ha mai avuto e di chi deve mantenerlo.
Antonio Di Pietro: As far as we of the Italia dei Valori party are concerned, one of the main priorities has been to lend support to those people who no longer have jobs, to those who have never had jobs at all, and to those who are struggling to keep their jobs.

Per questa ragione abbiamo contrastato questo governo che toglie ai poveri e da ai ricchi, che toglie a chi paga le tasse e da agli evasori fiscali, che toglie agli onesti e da ai furbi.
It is for this very reason that we have consistently fought against this Government, which takes from the poor and gives to the rich, takes from those who pay their taxes to give to the tax evaders and that takes from the honest people to give to the cunning.

Questo Primo maggio deve affermare che il lavoro non è un fatto concesso, ma un diritto costituzionale di ogni cittadino.
This May Day celebration must send a message that a job is not some sort of concession that is granted to certain people, but rather a constitutional right to which every citizen is entitled.

Ecco perché tra le nostre proposte abbiamo messo al primo posto la tutela del lavoro e l’aumento dei posti di lavoro per chi non ce l’ha.
That is also why we have placed the issue of job protection and the creation of more jobs to cater for those currently unemployed at the very top of our list of proposals.

Giornalista: Che giudizio da all’accordo tra Fiat e Chrysler?
Journalist: What do you think about the agreement between Fiat and Chrysler?

Antonio Di Pietro: Di per se l’accordo è ottimo perché permette ad un marchio italiano di espandersi nel mondo.
Antonio Di Pietro: I believe that the agreement in itself is a good thing because it enables an Italian brand to expand globally.

Vogliamo capire se in termini di posti di lavoro ce li tolgono o ce li mettono.
What remains to be seen is whether the agreement will result in more jobs or less jobs.

Non vorrei che sia soltanto un accordo che privilegia il capitale e manda a casa gli operai.
I sincerely hope that this agreement does not simply benefit the employers while sending employees home.

Noi dell’Italia dei Valori partecipiamo alla festa del Primo maggio perché da sempre siamo in difesa delle fasce sociali più deboli.
We of the Italia dei Valori party are taking part in the May Day celebrations because we have always stood up in defence of the weaker groups in our society.

Per questa ragione vogliamo che la politica economica del governo dia un’attenzione maggiore a queste fasce sociali e non agli speculatori.
It is for this reason that we demand that this Government’s economic policy pay greater attention to the interests of these social groups and not those of the speculators.
