Sardinia is the second largest island in the Mediterranean, situated between the Tyrhennian Sea and the Sardinian Sea. Its landscape is characterised by a succession of irregular mountain chains, isolated peaks and very high, jagged coasts with intervals of brief coastal flatlands.

In recent years tourism has encouraged the relaunching of traditional agricultural activities, livestock breeding and crafts, to which the economy is still tightly bound.

Storia
History

Sardinia is an ancient land and it preserves many traces of architecture from pre-Nuraghic times and mysterious civilisations that have left behind important symbols such as the ancient “nuraghi” stone towers, fascinating enigmas from 3,500 years ago.

They are scattered about the whole island and more than 7,000 can still be seen.

But the most important period for the island was the “judgeship” era ( the four administrative and judicial regions which governed Sardinia during the Middle Ages), which started in the early Middle Ages in Logudoro, with Turris Libissonis as its capital.

The best known historic period was the Arborea period when Tharros and then Aristanis (Oristano) were the capitals.

Judge Eleonora di Arborea was of great importance in the history of Sardinia. Still quite popular now, during her reign (1383-1404) she managed to unite the Sardinian population against the Spanish invaders and was the last to surrender.

She is to be thanked for the famous “Carta de Logu”, written in the Sardinian language, which is one of the first examples of a civil and criminal legal code.

In 1718 Sardinia was assigned to the House of Savoy who thus took the royal title.

The Kingdom of Italy derived from the earlier Kingdom of Sardinia, to later become the Italian Republic.

In 1948 the Autonomous Region of Sardinia was instituted under a special statute.

On 19 June 1950 the Regional Council voted for the Four Moors’ Heads to be adopted as the Region’s coat of arms, in remembrance of a battle that the Spanish had won against the Arabs in the long struggle to “reconquer” the Iberian peninsula.

It seems that the battle in question was the Battle of Alcoraz, at the end of which the blindfolded heads of four dead Moorish princes were found on the battlefield.

Malloredus (or mini-potato dumplings) is one of Sardinia’s best known dishes (along with “fregola”, a typical durum wheat pasta, and roast suckling pig) and certainly the most widepsread in the region.

Another highly prized first course are the “Culurgionis” (ravioli), a typical packet filled with pecorino cheese and swiss chard, or else with beef, or even other variations that include onion, potato and mint, and are served either with a tomato sauce or olive oil or with just a sprinkling of pecorino.

Another specialty, dear to the heart of SardinianNobel Laureate Grazia Deledda is “Filindeu”, a kind of net made of pasta and cooked in a mutton broth with bits of cheese.

The “mamuthones” is a tragic and disturbing wooden mask depicting demonic figures from the “underground kingdom” or, more simply, caricatures of the Moors defeated by the Sardinians.

In addition to the many and rather well-known seaside resorts scattered along the island’s coasts, inland Sardinia has lesser known landscapes and natural attractions that are nevertheless equally fascinating and waiting to be discovered.

Il trenino verde.
The Green Train.

A train drawn by a steam engine slowly crosses the centre of Sardinia, joining the southern to the eastern shore.

From the clear waters and red rocks of Arbatax you reach the wild and, in part, still uncontaminated parts of the Barbagia. The train glides through the internal mountains up to one thousand metres above sea level, passing through woods with centuries-old trees, skirting the lake in Flumendosa and finally descending to the coast at Cagliari.

Gorroppu (natural monument).

Lula (excursion on Monte Albo).

For those who would like to see the magnificent mouflons and get a taste of the real Sardinia, this is one of the least known stretches of the fascinating limestone cordillera of Monte Albo di Lula, and one of the most densely wooded areas on the whole island; from here you can still admire mouflons and Bonelli’s eagles which had been thought to be extinct.
