The return of the curvy cucumber: Commission to allow sale of ‘wonky’ fruit and vegetables
Tornano sui banchi degli ortolani i cetrioli storti: la Commissione autorizza la vendita di frutta e ortaggi fuori norma

Rules governing the size and shape of fruit and vegetables will be consigned to history after European Union Member States today voted on Commission proposals to repeal specific marketing standards for 26 types of fruit and vegetables.
Le norme sulle dimensioni e la forma degli ortofrutticoli appartengono ormai al passato: oggi gli Stati membri dell’Unione europea hanno votato le proposte della Commissione che abrogano le norme specifiche di commercializzazione di ventisei tipi di frutta e ortaggi.

The Commission’s initiative to get rid of these standards is a major element in its ongoing efforts to streamline and simplify EU rules and cut red tape.
L’iniziativa della Commissione di eliminare queste norme costituisce un elemento portante dei suoi sforzi di razionalizzazione e semplificazione della normativa UE e di snellimento di inutili formalità burocratiche.

For 10 types of fruit and vegetables, including apples, strawberries and tomatoes, marketing standards will remain in place.
Per dieci tipi di frutta e verdura, fra cui mele, fragole e pomodori, le norme di commercializzazione restano in vigore.

>>> But even for these 10, Member States could for the first time allow shops to sell products that don’t respect the standards, as long as they are labelled to distinguish them from ‘extra’, ‘class I’ and ‘class II’ fruit.
Ma anche per questi dieci prodotti ortofrutticoli gli Stati membri potranno per la prima volta autorizzare i negozi a vendere prodotti fuori norma purché siano etichettati in modo da distinguerli dai prodotti delle categorie extra, I e II.

In other words, the new rules will allow national authorities to permit the sale of all fruit and vegetables, regardless of their size and shape.
In altre parole, la nuova normativa conferisce alle autorità nazionali la facoltà di autorizzare la vendita di tutti i prodotti ortofrutticoli, indipendentemente dalla loro forma e dimensione.

“This marks a new dawn for the curvy cucumber and the knobbly carrot,” said Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development.
«È iniziata una nuova era per i cetrioli storti e le carote nodose» ha dichiarato a questo proposito Mariann Fischer Boel, Commissaria all’agricoltura e allo sviluppo rurale.

“It’s a concrete example of our drive to cut unnecessary red tape.
«È un’iniziativa esemplare per eliminare adempimenti burocratici inutili.

We simply don’t need to regulate this sort of thing at EU level.

è molto meglio lasciare quest’incombenza agli operatori del mercato.

And in these days of high food prices and general economic difficulties, consumers should be able to choose from the widest range of products possible.
E nella congiuntura attuale, caratterizzata da prezzi elevati dei prodotti alimentari e da difficoltà economiche generalizzate, è opportuno permettere ai consumatori di scegliere fra la più vasta gamma possibile di prodotti.

It makes no sense to throw perfectly good products away, just because they are the ‘wrong’ shape.”
È assurdo buttar via prodotti perfettamente commestibili semplicemente perché non hanno una forma perfetta».

During last year’s negotiations on the reform of the Common Market Organisation for fruit and vegetables, the Commission committed itself to reduce unnecessary bureaucracy by getting rid of a number of marketing standards for fruit and vegetables.
Durante le trattative svoltesi lo scorso anno sulla riforma dell’organizzazione comune del mercato nel settore dei prodotti ortofrutticoli la Commissione si è impegnata a ridurre la burocrazia inutile eliminando una serie di norme di commercializzazione per determinati frutti e ortaggi.

Today’s vote means that these standards will be repealed for 26 products:
Il voto odierno significa che saranno eliminate le norme di commercializzazione per ventisei prodotti:

apricots, artichokes, asparagus, aubergines, avocadoes, beans, Brussels sprouts, carrots, cauliflowers, cherries, courgettes, cucumbers, cultivated mushrooms, garlic, hazelnuts in shell, headed cabbage, leeks, melons, onions, peas, plums, ribbed celery, spinach, walnuts in shell, water melons, and witloof/chicory.
albicocche, carciofi, asparagi, melanzane, avocado, fagioli, cavoli di Bruxelles, carote, cavolfiori, ciliegie, zucchine, cetrioli, funghi coltivati, aglio, nocciole in guscio, cavoli cappucci, porri, meloni, cipolle, piselli, prugne, sedani da coste, spinaci, noci in guscio, cocomeri e cicoria witloof.

The proposals would maintain specific marketing standards for 10 products which account for 75 percent of the value of EU trade:
Le proposte consentirebbero di mantenere le norme specifiche di commercializzazione per dieci prodotti che rappresentano il 75% del valore degli scambi nell’Unione europea:

apples, citrus fruit, kiwi fruit, lettuces, peaches and nectarines, pears, strawberries, sweet peppers, table grapes and tomatoes.
mele, agrumi, kiwi, lattughe, pesche e pesche noci, pere, fragole, peperoni dolci, uve da tavola e pomodori.

However, Member States could also exempt these from the standards if they were sold in the shops with an appropriate label.
Tuttavia, gli Stati membri possono esentare questi prodotti dall’applicazione delle norme se sono venduti con un’etichettatura appropriata.

In practical terms, this means that an apple which does not meet the standard could still be sold in the shop, as long as it were labelled “product intended for processing” or equivalent wording.
In pratica ciò significa che le mele fuori norma potranno essere vendute in negozio purché provviste di un’etichetta con la dicitura “prodotto destinato alla trasformazione” o una dicitura equivalente.

The Commission will now formally adopt the changes which, for practical reasons, will be implemented from 1 July 2009.
La Commissione adotterà ora ufficialmente queste modifiche che, per motivi pratici, entreranno in vigore al 1°luglio 2009.
