The “Social Card” blunder
Oggi vi voglio parlare di questa storia della Social Card che il governo Berlusconi ha proposto per venire incontro ai poveri.
Today I would like to talk to you about the matter of this Social Card that the Berlusconi government has proposed in order to assist the poor.
Non ho nulla in contrario, anzi, vorrei che ai poveri si desse il più possibile, e non solo quei 40 euro al mese, ossia 1 euro e venti al giorno, che si propongono.
I have nothing against the scheme itself. Indeed, I would be happy if the poor could be given as much as possible and not just this 40 Euro per month that is currently being proposed, which is equivalent to about 1 Euro twenty per day.
Ben venga qualsiasi cosa, ma non sotto forma di elemosina cosi sfacciata.
Better than nothing perhaps, but not when it is given in the form of such a brazen handout.
Rifletteteci un attimo.

Ci sono modi e modi per aiutare i poveri, ma l’ultima cosa che bisogna fare è umiliarli.
There are ways and means to assist the poor, but the last thing we want to do is to humiliate them.
La dignità del povero vale più della dignità del ricco.
The dignity of a poor man is worth far more than that of a wealthy man.
Il ricco se la può anche comprare, il povero la dignità non la compra, la deve avere.
The wealthy man can even afford to buy some dignity if needs be, but the poor man cannot afford to buy dignity, so any dignity that he may have must be inherent.
Gli mandano a casa questa tessera, il povero deve prenderla e andarla ad usare nel supermercato e i prodotti che gli dicono, magari negli stessi supermercati del Presidente del Consiglio.
So, they are going to be sending this card to the individual’s home and the man then has to take the card, go to one of the supermarkets, perhaps the Prime Minister’s own supermarkets, where he can then only purchase certain specific products.
Non potevano mandargli 40 euro al mese direttamente a casa sua invece che mandargli la tessera?
Couldn’t they rather just send the 40 Euro per month itself to the man’s home, instead of sending him the card?
Costa pure meno, e lasci decidere a lui cosa vuole farne, se comprare medicine o il pane piuttosto che il burro.
It would cost less and it would allow the individual to decide for himself what he wants to do with the money, perhaps buy some medicine or bread rather than butter.
Perché umiliare cosi il povero, che si sente già umiliato?
Why humiliate the poor in this manner when they have already been humiliated enough?
Quando sta nel bancone del supermercato deve sentire i bisbiglii degli altri che stanno dietro e che sparlano tra di loro?
Must they really be made to stand in the queue at the supermarket checkout counter and listen to the other patrons behind them whispering about them?
Questa è l’umiliazione della dignità umana, che trasforma il cittadino in suddito, e chi ha il potere non è colui che da un servizio, ma come il padrone che da il tozzo di pane o il pezzo d’osso al suo cane.
This is the kind of humiliation of human dignity that turns a citizen into a subject, and the individual with the power is not in fact offering a service, but is behaving like a master giving his dog a crust of bread or a piece of bone.
Questo è quello che mi umilia, è questo che credo sia ingiusto.
That is the thing that upsets me and I believe that it is very wrong.
E’ questo il modello culturale del governo attuale che non posso accettare e che intendo contrastare.
This is a perfect example of the current government’s cultural model that I refuse to accept and that I aim to oppose.
