Lo Stato c’è, soprattutto per Mediaset
The State is indeed here, especially for Mediaset

When a State gets to the point of cutting 256 Euro a month disability grants and 450 Euro a month caregiver grants, as proposed in a Government amendment to the emergency interim budget, then the State, meaning the body that is supposed to protect the interests of the citizens, essentially ceases to exist.

When a State cuts its culture and education budgets to the point where public schools are obliged to resort to private fund raising in order to be able to paint a wall, then the State essentially ceases to exist.

When a State leaves one third of its working-age youngsters out in the street while wanting to approve a shameful wiretapping law after having already approved another law on legitimate impediment and wanting to extend the scope of this impunity bill to include all ministers, as has already been done in the case of the Prime Minister, then the State essentially ceases to exist.

Primo maggio
May Day

This morning, together with the trade unions and the workers of this Country, I took part in the May Day celebrations in Turin, a city that stands as the symbol of this Country’s industrial development.

More than merely a celebration, today is in fact an opportunity for us to remind the Government, and those who represent it, of the fact that the right to work is an inalienable right of every citizen.

I would like to dedicate today to the more than one hundred workers that, according to the document sent to me by Marco Bazzoni, a worker representative for workplace safety, have lost their lives since the beginning of this year in the expression of this right.

Sicurezza sul lavoro, licenza di uccidere
Workplace safety, licence to kill

The Cabinet has approved the Legislative Decree that amends the consolidated text regarding safety in the workplace, a veritable licence to kill that we must reject for all we’re worth.

This Executive doesn’t care about anyone, not even the people who lose their lives in the workplace.

After having offered his condolences, simply in order to be seen on TV attending the funerals, Sacconi proceeded to lessen the companies’ already feeble obligations as regards workplace safety.

Lettera aperta al Presidente della Repubblica
Open letter to the President of the Republic

Sig. Presidente della Repubblica, Giorgio Napolitano,

Signor President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano,

Let it be permitted to tell you, in your position as the guarantor of the Constitution, that, in our opinion, the Berlusconi government is about to put in place another rip in the Constitution.

He has already got Parliament to bend to his will with a massive use of legal decrees and “obligatory” votes of confidence.

Here is a letter I received from a citizen regarding the matter of the Social Card (also read my article entitled: “The Social Card joke”).

The letter ends with some questions that tug at my heartstrings and fill me with intense anger and a sense of profound indignation.

Once more, Silvio Berlusconi is using the State and his position in a conflict of interests in favour of his own TV stations.

The “Social Card” blunder

Today I would like to talk to you about the matter of this Social Card that the Berlusconi government has proposed in order to assist the poor.

I have nothing against the scheme itself. Indeed, I would be happy if the poor could be given as much as possible and not just this 40 Euro per month that is currently being proposed, which is equivalent to about 1 Euro twenty per day.

Better than nothing perhaps, but not when it is given in the form of such a brazen handout.

Rifletteteci un attimo.
Take a moment to think about this.

The words of Giulio Ballio, the Rector of Milan Polytechnic, were to be expected, given the direction of the reform of the Higher Education sector.

The real war is at home

Yesterday I spoke in the House to have some responses from the government and to understand how it happens that we send our soldiers a long way from home, from their families, to rightly protect human lives, and yet we are not tackling the wars at home that are creating many many deaths.

The question
