Solo nel giardino del Gigante Egoista era ancora inverno. The birds did not care to sing in it as there were no children, and the trees forgot to blossom.
Gli uccellini non avevano voglia di cantare lì poiché non c’erano bambini e gli alberi si scordavano di fiorire.
Once a beautiful flower put its head out from the grass, but when it saw the notice-board it was so sorry for the children that it slipped back into the ground again, and went off to sleep.
Una volta un meraviglioso fiore mise la testa fuori dall’erba, ma quando vide il cartello fu così dispiaciuto per i bambini che rientrò furtivamente nel terreno e tornò a dormire.
The only people who were pleased were the Snow and the Frost.
I soli ad essere contenti erano la Neve e il Gelo.
>>> ‘Spring has forgotten this garden,’ they cried, ‘so we will live here all the year round.’
‘La Primavera si è dimenticata di questo giardino,’ esclamarono, ‘così vivremo qui tutto l’anno.’
The Snow covered up the grass with her great white cloak, and the Frost painted all the trees silver.
La Neve coprì l’erba con il suo ampio manto bianco e il Gelo dipinse gli alberi d’argento.
Then they invited the North Wind to stay with them, and he came.
Poi invitarono il Vento del Nord a stare con loro ed egli arrivò
He was wrapped in furs, and he roared all day about the garden, and blew the chimney-pots down.
Era avvolto nelle pellicce, ruggiva tutto il giorno in giro per il giardino e buttava giù i comignoli.
‘This is a delightful spot,’ he said, we must ask the Hail on a visit.’
‘Questo è un posticino incantevole,’ disse, ‘dobbiamo invitare la Grandine a farci visita.’
So the Hail came.
Così arrivò la Grandine.
Every day for three hours he rattled on the roof of the castle till he broke most of the slates, and then he ran round and round the garden as fast as he could go.
Ogni giorno per tre ore scuoteva i tetti del castello con fragore finché non ebbe rotto la maggior parte delle tegole e poi correva tutt’intorno al giardino più veloce che poteva.
He was dressed in grey, and his breath was like ice.
Era vestito di grigio e il suo respiro era come ghiaccio.
‘I cannot understand why the Spring is so late in coming,’ said the Selfish Giant, as he sat at the window and looked out at his cold white garden; ‘I hope there will be a change in the weather.’
‘Non riesco a capire come mai la Primavera è così in ritardo,’ disse il Gigante Egoista, mentre sedeva alla finestra e guardava fuori il suo freddo e bianco giardino; ‘spero che il tempo cambi.’
But the Spring never came, nor the Summer.
Ma la Primavera non arrivò mai, né tanto meno l’Estate.
The Autumn gave golden fruit to every garden, but to the Giant’s garden she
gave none.
L’Autunno donava frutti dorati ad ogni giardino, ma al giardino del Gigante non ne dette alcuno.
‘He is too selfish,’ she said.
‘E’ troppo egoista,’ disse.
So it was always Winter there, and the North Wind and the Hail, and the Frost,
and the Snow danced about through the trees.
Così era sempre Inverno lì e il Vento del Nord e la Grandine e il Gelo e la Neve salterellavano qua e là tra gli alberi.
