There is a wonderful exhibition on of Antonio Ligabue’s works in Milan. This Swiss-born, but considered Italian, artist produced around 1,200 works of art and about 300 are on show.

Those who have not seen his paintings before will discover his more than vivid colours and ‘action’ pictures, particularly of wild animals: tigers ready to pounce on you or quarrelling with leopards, cockfights to the death and turkeys pulling out all the stops too.

His love of painting animals is famous but I discovered that those creatures who are small and inoffensive like chicks have apparently less interest for him and are painted more vaguely. Also small insects and spiders which are around in most of Ligabue’s paintings, seem to lack the energy of the bigger animals.

When you say Ligabue, usually you mean animals but I found his portraits and self-portraits equally astounding. As to his sculptures, according to me, they are exquisite and lovable.

The exhibition is open until 26th October. Just go, if you have the opportunity!
