EU testing shows serious risk of shocks and fire in many lights.
Secondo i test dell’UE, molte decorazioni luminose possono trasmettere scosse e provocare incendi.

Stay safe – turn them off when you go to bed or leave the house.
Non giocate con la sicurezza: spegnetele prima di andare a dormire o uscire di casa.

One in three sets of Christmas lights tested in a commission-led market survey presented a direct risk of fire or electric shock.
Una su tre delle confezioni di luci per Natale controllate in un’indagine sui mercati promossa dalla Commissione UE presentava rischi diretti di incendio e di scosse elettriche.

Tests were carried out in Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Slovenia and Slovakia on nearly 200 sets of light strings in all price categories.
I test sono stati effettuati in Germania, Paesi Bassi, Slovacchia, Slovenia e Ungheria su quasi 200 confezioni di festoni luminosi in tutte le categorie di prezzo.

The commission found thin wiring, weak cord anchorage and poor insulation in many strings of lights.
In numerosi casi sono stati trovati fili elettrici troppo sottili, ancoraggi dei cavi inadeguati e un isolamento insufficiente.

Just over 40% of the samples were made in China.
Poco più del 40% dei campioni erano stati prodotti in Cina.

In Hungary, nearly 96% of the lights were found to be hazardous.
In Ungheria quasi il 96% delle luci è stato qualificato pericoloso.

In the Netherlands, 56% failed to comply with EU safety standards.
Nei Paesi Bassi, il 56% è risultato non conforme alle norme di sicurezza UE.

Although only five countries took part in the survey, it is likely the same lights are being sold across the EU.
Anche se l’indagine era limitata a cinque paesi, è probabile che le stesse decorazioni luminose siano vendute in tutta l’UE.

Consumer commissioner Meglena Kuneva said the findings were a wake-up call.
La commissaria per i Consumatori Meglena Kuneva ha detto che i risultati erano un campanello d’allarme.

She urged EU member countries to do a better job of enforcing safety standards and said industry – manufacturers, retailers, distributors and importers – should also step up their checks.
Ha esortato i paesi membri a fare più attenzione a imporre il rispetto delle norme di sicurezza e ha invitato gli operatori economici – produttori, importatori, distributori, dettaglianti – ad applicare controlli più severi.

As for consumers, she stressed vigilance, offering the following advice:
Ai consumatori ha consigliato di essere vigilanti, raccomandando loro di:

* buy Christmas lights from reputable dealers
* comprare luci solo da negozianti di fiducia

* never leave Christmas lights on when you are out of the house or in bed
* non lasciarle mai accese uscendo di casa o andando a dormire

* if you suspect a problem with your lights, stop using them and return them to the shop.
* smontarle e riportarle al negozio al minimo sospetto di problemi.
