European Voluntary Service
Il Servizio volontario europeo

Students like Ella who are keen to broaden their horizons, learning about new cultures and helping out when they can, thank the European Voluntary Service (EVS) for the opportunity.
Gli studenti che desiderano ampliare i propri orizzonti, conoscendo nuove culture e mettendosi a disposizione degli altri, possono contattare il Servizio volontario europeo (SVE).

Ella first heard about the EVS scheme at school.
Maria, ad esempio, ha sentito parlare per la prima volta del progetto SVE a scuola.

>>> The idea is quite simple.
Il concetto è piuttosto semplice:

It’s a way of encouraging young people, between the ages of 18-25, to spend between six to 12 months in another country.
si tratta infatti di un modo per incoraggiare i giovani tra i 18 e i 25 anni a vivere per 6-12 mesi in un altro paese.

But as Ella soon learned, it is by no means a holiday. EVS projects do invaluable work helping people in different fields like the environment, arts and culture, and even sports and leisure (so, rest assured, it is not all work, no play).
Sulla propria pelle, Maria ha però capito che non si tratta affatto di una vacanza, perché i progetti SVE svolgono compiti di valore inestimabile, aiutando la gente in vari settori, come l’ambiente, le arti e la cultura, gli sport e il tempo libero (e quindi, tranquilli, perché non è proprio tutto lavoro).

Volunteers also take part in activities aimed at children, young people, the elderly.
I volontari partecipano inoltre a iniziative dedicate a bambini, giovani e anziani.

Rules, regulations… and fun
Regole, norme e…divertimento

Of course, there are a few rules and regulations to observe, even with something as fun and rewarding as this.
Ci sono però alcune regole e norme da osservare, anche in un ambito rilassato e gratificante come questo.

There have to be three partners involved in every EVS project.That means Ella, the volunteer, the host organisation, which finds her the work, and the organisation sending her in the first place. And one of the countries involved has to be European.
In ogni progetto SVE devono essere coinvolti tre partner (nel nostro esempio, Maria è la volontaria, poi c’è l’organizzazione ospite che le trova il lavoro e l’organizzazione che la inserisce inizialmente nel progetto), di cui uno deve per forza essere europeo.

Plus, Ella is a volunteer, so she does not get paid for the work she does. But she does have all her travel, insurance, accommodation and food paid for, and she even gets an allowance.
Inoltre, Maria, essendo volontaria, non verrà pagata per il suo operato, ma, oltre a ricevere un importo minimo, le verranno pagate tutte le spese relative agli spostamenti, all’assicurazione, al vitto e all’alloggio.

Young people like Ella, who are 12 years and over, have been contributing to their host communities for more than decade. But the relationship is certainly win-win.
Per più di un decennio, i giovani come Maria (dai 12 anni in su) hanno dato molto alle comunità che li hanno ospitati, ma il rapporto è proficuo per entrambe le parti:

Volunteers get to find out more about another country, learn new languages and gain insight into the Europe they left behind through the eyes of their host community.
i volontari hanno infatti la possibilità di conoscere un altro paese, imparare una nuova lingua e capire più a fondo l’Europa che si sono lasciati alle spalle attraverso gli occhi della comunità ospite.
