Imagine you are on holiday in another EU country and witness an accident.
Immaginate di essere in vacanza in un altro paese europeo e di essere testimoni di un incidente.

You are the only person around and need to call an ambulance or the police.
Siete l’unica persona nelle vicinanze e dovete chiamare un’ambulanza o la polizia.

What can you do? Call 112, of course.
Cosa fate? Chiamate il 112, è ovvio.

Number 112 is the ‘single European emergency number’. Dial 112, free of charge, in any of the EU Member States, as well as in a number of non-EU countries – such as Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway – to get help from the emergency services.
Il 112 è il “numero unico europeo di emergenza”: in tutti gli Stati membri, ma anche in alcuni paesi non membri (Islanda, Liechtenstein e Norvegia), basterà comporlo per ricevere assistenza (la chiamata è gratuita).

In some countries, 112 has become the only emergency call number. In other countries, it exists alongside national emergency numbers.
In alcuni paesi, il 112 è ora l’unico numero telefonico da chiamare in caso di emergenza, mentre in altri coesiste con i numeri nazionali.

In both cases, if you call 112, you will be connected to the emergency service you need.
In entrambi i casi, componendolo sarete messi in contatto con il servizio di cui avete bisogno.

With European citizens increasingly travelling to other countries for business or pleasure, there is a need for a single European emergency number across the Union.
Visti i continui spostamenti dei cittadini europei in altri paesi per motivi di lavoro o piacere, era necessario disporre di un numero di emergenza unico valido per tutta l’Unione.

That’s why 112 was established in 1991.
È per questo che il 112 venne introdotto nel 1991.

Since then, the EU countries have created the infrastructure to make 112 work and are now obliged to make sure that you can call 112 from a fixed or a mobile phone.
Da allora, gli Stati membri hanno creato l’infrastruttura necessaria per il 112 e sono ora tenuti a garantire che il numero si possa comporre da telefono fisso o cellulare.

Work is still being done to improve the system. In particular, to make sure that the emergency services of all EU countries are able to locate precisely where a caller is situated. This is really important in making sure help arrives as quickly as possible.
Tuttora si sta lavorando per perfezionare il sistema, in particolare per garantire che i servizi di emergenza di tutti i paesi UE siano in grado di localizzare con precisione la persona che chiama, un fattore essenziale per la tempestività dei soccorsi.

Member States also need to ensure that emergency services are able to answer calls in foreign languages, as well as inform their citizens about the existence of 112.
Gli Stati membri devono inoltre assicurare che i servizi di emergenza siano in grado di rispondere a chiamate effettuate in una lingua straniera, nonché informare i cittadini dell’esistenza del 112.
