Mission for Growth: Seizing mutual benefit for businesses in the EU and Egypt
Missione per la crescita: trarre benefici reciproci per le PMI nell’UE e in Egitto

Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani is in Egypt today, accompanied by a large business delegation composed of representatives of 102 European companies and industry associations from 13 Member States. Collectively they represent approximately three million employees and €700 billion in turnover.
Oggi il Vicepresidente Antonio Tajani si recherà in Egitto accompagnato da una nutrita delegazione di imprenditori, composta da rappresentanti di 102 imprese e di associazioni di industrie europee di 13 Stati membri, che collettivamente rappresentano circa 3 milioni di lavoratori e 700 miliardi di euro di fatturato.

This mission is part of the new series of “Missions for Growth” to help European enterprises, in particular small and medium sized enterprises to better profit from fast growing emerging international markets.
Questa missione rientra nella nuova serie di “missioni per la crescita”, volte ad aiutare le imprese europee, in particolare le piccole e le medie imprese, a trarre maggiori vantaggi dai mercati internazionali emergenti in rapida crescita.

It is the largest such “Mission for Growth” headed by Vice President Tajani to date, quadrupling the usual participation numbers.
Si tratta della “Missione per la crescita” più numerosa mai guidata dal Vicepresidente Tajani, con un numero di partecipanti quadruplo rispetto alle precedenti.

During his visit Vice President Tajani will sign four Letters of Intent with his Egyptian counterparts which identify avenues for :
Durante la visita, il Vicepresidente Tajani firmerà quattro lettere di intenti con le sue controparti egiziane, che apriranno la strada per:

– closer co-operation on reduction of SME administrative burden
– una cooperazione più stretta sulla riduzione degli oneri amministrativi gravanti sulle PMI;

– industrial co-operation
– la cooperazione industriale;

– tourism policy
– la politica del turismo;

– standardisation
– la normazione.

Per contribuire a elaborare raccomandazioni politiche per la task force, la Commissione europea ha organizzato un forum dedicato a imprese e turismo, che si terrà oggi al Cairo.

The Forum mobilised more than 150 European business representatives and tourism stakeholders, to engage in debate and to network with the Egyptian business and tourism community.
Il forum ha mobilitato oltre 150 rappresentanti delle imprese e delle parti interessate del settore turistico europeo a partecipare al dibattito e a stabilire contatti con la comunità imprenditoriale e turistica egiziana.

They proposed action points to help Egypt’s economy and tourism sector back-on-track.
Sono state proposte azioni per contribuire a rilanciare l’economia e il turismo egiziani.

Both sides are also aware of the pivotal role the tourism sector has traditionally played in the Egyptian economy.
Entrambe le parti sono anche consapevoli del ruolo chiave che il settore turistico tradizionalmente svolgeva nell’economia egiziana.

In the wake of the Arab Spring, this sector has suffered dramatically, and it is essential to make it flourish again.
In seguito alla primavera araba, questo settore ha subito pesanti ripercussioni negative ed è essenziale che torni a prosperare.

During the Forum EU business leaders and stakeholders will debate “Davos style” and will also meet several Egyptian Ministers in bilateral meetings.
Nel forum i dirigenti delle imprese e le parti interessate dell’UE discuteranno secondo il “modello di Davos” e incontreranno anche diversi ministri egiziani in riunioni bilaterali.

Tomorrow, 14 November, Vice President Antonio Tajani, together with Commissioner responsible for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Stefan Füle, will participate in the first meeting of the EU-Egypt Task Force, at the invitation of EU High Representative for Foreign Policy and Security Policy/Vice-President of the Commission Catherine Ashton.
Domani, 14 novembre, il Vicepresidente Antonio Tajani e il Commissario europeo per l’Allargamento e la Politica Europea di Vicinato, Stefan Füle, parteciperà alla prima riunione della task force UE-Egitto, su invito dell’Alto Rappresentante per gli Affari Esteri e la Politica di Sicurezza dell’Unione europea, Catherine Ashton.

By bringing together political and economic leaders from both sides of the Mediterranean the EU and the Arab Republic of Egypt can collectively address their shared agenda of boosting investment, restarting tourism, opening markets, creating jobs and offering new opportunities to businesses in Egypt.
Riunendo leader politici ed economici delle due sponde del Mediterraneo, l’UE e la Repubblica araba d’Egitto possono realizzare collettivamente il loro programma comune di stimolo degli investimenti, ripresa del turismo, apertura dei mercati, creazione di posti di lavoro e offerta di nuove opportunità per le imprese in Egitto.

The EU-Egypt Task Force is an opportunity for the European Union to come together to send a strong signal of support to the Egyptian people.
La task force UE-Egitto offre all’Unione europea l’opportunità di riunirsi per inviare un segnale di sostegno forte al popolo egiziano.

This mission aims at fostering industrial cooperation and business relation with the Arab Republic of Egypt.
Questa missione intende promuovere la cooperazione industriale e le relazioni commerciali con la Repubblica araba d’Egitto.

The success of the transition in Egypt will have a significant impact on the economy of the region and globally, and European and Egyptian business communities can play a major and mutually beneficial role.
L’esito positivo della transizione in Egitto avrà un grosso impatto sull’economia regionale e mondiale e le comunità imprenditoriali europea ed egiziana possono svolgere un ruolo importante e di reciproco vantaggio.

With a GDP of more than EGP 1 300bn (€ 166.6 bn), Egypt is the third largest economy in Africa and among the 50 largest in the world.

After Nigeria and Ethiopia, Egypt is the third most populated country in Africa, its population exceeding 80 million, with a GDP per capita of EGP 15 600 (€ 2  099,2).

Economic growth in Egypt has been slow, with GDP growth of 2.2% in 2011-2012.

However increased political stability has led to some positive economic signs.
Tuttavia, grazie ad una maggiore stabilità politica si sono notati alcuni segnali economici positivi.

Most of the real output growth since 2000 has come from services, now accounting for almost half of Egyptian GDP (49%) and employment (51%).
Gran parte della crescita reale del prodotto dal 2000 è dovuta ai servizi, che attualmente rappresentano circa la metà del PIL egiziano (49%) e dell’occupazione (51%).

Exports: EU is Egypt’s main trading partner, absorbing 30.5% of Egypt’s total exports.

In recent years Egyptian exports to the EU have steadily increased.
Negli ultimi anni le esportazioni egiziane verso l’UE sono costantemente aumentate.

The structure of Egypt’s exports broadly reflects the structure of the economy, with services accounting for almost half of total exports.
La struttura delle esportazioni egiziane riflette a grandi linee la struttura dell’economia, con i servizi che rappresentano circa la metà delle esportazioni totali.

Egypt’s exports to the EU were mainly:

Imports: The largest single group of imports to Egypt come from the EU. In 2010 the imports from the EU to Egypt accounted for 32.6% of the total import to the Egyptian market.
Importazioni: nel 2010 le importazioni dall’UE verso l’Egitto hanno rappresentato il 32,6% delle importazioni totali nel mercato egiziano.

The largest single group of imports to Egypt come from the EU. Saudi Arabia and the United States are the second and third largest sources of imports to Egypt.
L’UE si colloca dunque al primo posto tra le fonti principali di importazioni verso l’Egitto, seguita dall’Arabia Saudita e dagli Stati Uniti.

The main EU products exported to Egypt are:
I principali prodotti UE esportati in Egitto sono:

(i) machinery and transport equipment;
i) macchine e mezzi di trasporto;

(ii) fuels and mining products (iii) chemicals.

Exports: EU exports to Egypt have increased over time but slightly decreased from 2010 to 2011.
Esportazioni: Le esportazioni dell’UE verso l’Egitto sono aumentate nel tempo, ma hanno subito una leggera flessione dal 2010 al 2011.

EU exports to Egypt represent 0.9% of the total EU exports.
Esse rappresentano lo 0,9% delle esportazioni totali dell’UE.

In terms of major export partners for the EU, Egypt ranks number 24.
L’Egitto si posiziona al numero 24 tra i principali partner dell’UE in termini di esportazioni.

Imports: imports from Egypt to the EU represent only 0.6% of the total imports to the European market and Egypt ranks only 36 in terms of EU import partners.
Importazioni: le importazioni dall’Egitto nell’UE rappresentano soltanto lo 0,6% delle importazioni totali verso il mercato europeo e l’Egitto occupa soltanto il 36° posto tra i partner dell’UE in termini di importazioni.

Egypt is one of the more open economies in the Middle East and North Africa and is also the number one recipient of FDI in the South-Mediterranean region.
L’Egitto è una delle economie più aperte del Medio Oriente e del Nord Africa ed è anche il principale beneficiario di IED della regione del Mediterraneo meridionale.

The EU is Egypt’s main source of FDI, it accounts for 80% of total FDI.
L’UE è la fonte principale di IED in Egitto e rappresenta l’80% degli IED totali.

EU FDI to Egypt from 2008 to 2009 dramatically decreased from 10.8 to 2.8 billion euro, mainly as a result of the financial crises.
Dal 2008 al 2009 gli IED dell’UE in Egitto sono drasticamente diminuiti, da 10,8 a 2,8 miliardi di euro, soprattutto a causa delle crisi finanziarie.

Egyptian FDI to the EU decreased from 2008 to 2010 from 0.8 to -0.2 billion euro.
Dal 2008 al 2010 gli IED egiziani nell’UE sono passati da 0,8 a -0,2 miliardi di euro.

Following Egypt’s political transition, new investment opportunities have been created, but many EU investors also face a new range of difficulties.
In seguito alla transizione politica in Egitto, sono emerse nuove opportunità di investimento, ma gli investitori dell’UE devono far fronte a una nuova serie di difficoltà.

The meetings conducted during this mission should be able to examine the opportunities but also address EU business concerns about protection of investment.
Le riunioni che si svolgeranno durante questa missione dovrebbero consentire di esaminare le opportunità, ma anche di affrontare le preoccupazioni delle imprese dell’UE riguardanti la protezione degli investimenti.

The Task Force was announced at the meeting in Brussels of the new Egyptian President, Mohammed Morsi, with European Commission president José Manuel Barroso on 13 September.
La task force è stata annunciata il 13 settembre in occasione dell’incontro a Bruxelles tra il nuovo presidente egiziano, Mohammed Morsi, e il presidente della Commissione europea, José Manuel Barroso.

Egypt has recently held the first democratic elections in its long history and it is clear that the Egyptian president sees the European Union as major partner for the new Egypt.
L’Egitto ha recentemente organizzato le prime elezioni democratiche della sua lunga storia ed è evidente che il presidente egiziano considera l’Unione europea un partner chiave del nuovo Egitto.
