Sono Alessandro Di Battista, ho scritto “Sicari a cinque euro”, cinque euro… 50 quetzales in Guatemala ho scoperto essere il prezzo più basso per ingaggiare un sicario, anche se spesso dei bambini, soprattutto nei tre Paesi del triangolo nord del Centro America: Guatemala, Honduras e Salvador.
I am Alessandro Di Battista and I wrote the book entitled “Sicari a cinque euro” (Literally “Killers for hire at five Euro”), yes five Euro … or 50 quetzales, which as I discovered in Guatemala, is the cheapest going rate for hiring a killer, even though they are often mere children, above all in the three Countries that make up the northern triangle of South America, namely Guatemala, Honduras and Salvador.

Per entrare in queste bande sono disposti a uccidere gratuitamente o per un piatto di pasta.
In order to get into these gangs, these killers are even prepared to kill for nothing or merely for a plate of pasta.

Lo fanno sì perché hanno fame, sicuramente la povertà è una molla che li spinge a premere il grilletto, ma non è l’unica, secondo me è fuorviante ragionare solamente in base alla povertà.
Yes, they are undoubtedly prepared to this because they are hungry since poverty is what drives them to press the trigger, but that is not the only reason they do it and in my opinion it is misleading to place all of the blame on poverty alone.

Un anno e mezzo fa mi trovavo in un quartiere di Panama City che si chiama Chorrillo e sono arrivato quasi per caso a conoscere un gruppo di ex assassini che poi erano riusciti a cambiare vita e mi hanno raccontato le loro storie, i loro anni passati in alcune bande criminali, che si chiamano a Panama: Maras, Pandillas.
A year and a half ago I found myself in Chorrillo, one of the quarters of Panama City, and purely coincidentally I got to meet a group of former hired-killers who had managed to turn their lives around and they told me the stories of the years they spent as members of various criminal gangs, called Maras or Pandillas in Guatemala.

They told me about their past and how they had got to the point of killing for little or no money and at the time I thought it was important to dig a little deeper, so a few months later I left in order to go and find out the origins of the hired-killer culture.

Ho viaggiato diversi mesi in Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama, Colombia, a cercare le origini del sicariato, il perché si uccide per così poco.
For a number of months I travelled around Guatemala, Ecuador, Panama and Columbia in search of the origins of the “low-cost” hired killer culture and the reason why they are prepared to kill for so little.

Dietro al sicariato “low cost” c’è la disgregazione del ceppo famigliare, l’abbandono delle campagne, la privatizzazione degli Stati, il libero mercato fuori controllo.
What lies behind this “low-cost” hired killer culture is a combination of the breakdown of the family unit, urbanisation, wholesale privatisation by Government and unrestrained markets.

In Latino America arrivano derrate di mais transgenico di multinazionali americane, soprattutto la Monsanto, che abbassano radicalmente i prezzi del mais.
Latin America is being flooded with genetically modified maize foodstuff products manufactured by American multinational companies like Monsanto, which drastically reduces the price of maize.

I contadini sono costretti a vendere la loro terra, a arrivare nelle città e si portano i figli che non hanno né arte né parte e arrivano purtroppo a uccidere per molto poco.
The farmers are then forced to sell their land and move to the cities, bringing their children with them, children who have no skills whatsoever, so they unfortunately land up committing murder for little or no money.

Non è soltanto la povertà, ma anche l’indigenza più terribile a spingere dei giovani a entrare nelle bande e premere il grilletto, c’è l’assenza di un lavoro, di un futuro, l’abbandono scolastico.
However, it’s not only poverty and extreme destitution that drives these youngsters to join these gangs and to press the trigger, but also the lack of jobs, the fact that they have no future and that they are school dropouts.

Per contrastare questo fenomeno non basta il pugno duro, le politiche repressive.
Tough action and repressive policies are not enough to fight this phenomenon.

Serve una risposta integrale, la riforma agraria, ridare la terra ai contadini, per permettere di avere un futuro per loro e i loro figli.
What is needed is a comprehensive solution that includes agricultural reform that gets the farmers back on the land and ensure a brighter future for them and their children.

Serve educazione, un’informazione libera che non si occupi soltanto di terrorizzare la popolazione per controllarla meglio.
They also need education and a free media that is not focused entirely on terrorising the population, thus making them easier to control.

Prima di partire pensavo a grandi linee più o meno chi fossero i buoni e chi i cattivi, chi le vittime e chi i carnefici, viaggiando mi sono reso conto che il confine era più labile, che sembra molto duro, molto difficile a dirsi, però è l’ambiente che ha creato fenomeni del genere.
Before I left I thought I knew more or less who the good guys and the bad guys were, who were the victims and who were the butchers, but while travelling I began to realise that the distinction was far more ephemeral than that, which may seem very harsh and difficult to say, however, it is the environment itself that has given rise to this kind of phenomenon.

Il viaggio di ricerca è iniziato in Guatemala, dove avevo lavorato un paio di anni occupandomi di cooperazione internazionale.
My research trip began in Guatemala, where I spent a couple of years looking into the issue of international cooperation.

E ho scelto di iniziare lì perché ho tuttora molti contatti, anche con gruppi di ex guerriglieri con cui ho lavorato.
I chose to start there because that is an area where I had, and still have many contacts, including groups of former guerrillas that I had worked with in the past.

Ho lavorato con i loro figli, seguendo progetti di volontariato, e gli ex guerriglieri sono stati un pozzo di informazioni.
I also worked with their children on various volunteer projects and these former guerrillas were a veritable well of information.

Durante il tentativo di rivoluzione avevano avuto diverse relazioni con gruppi di narcotrafficanti colombiani, messicani, guatemaltechi, sul territorio, per cui sono riuscito a entrare in contatto anche con gruppi criminali importanti, a fare indagini, nel modo anche più laico possibile, solo provando a capirci di più in questo fenomeno.
During their attempted revolution, they had built up relationships with various Columbian, Mexican and Guatemalan groups of drug traffickers who were active in the area, which enabled me to gain access to some major criminal groups and to conduct informal investigations in an attempt to gain a deeper understanding of this phenomenon.

Io pensavo che quanto meno si uccidesse per fame, che la povertà fosse una caratteristica preponderante dei killer a buon mercato, ma in realtà non è così.
I believed that, they were mainly killing to satisfy their hunger and that poverty was the main feature of these low-cost killers, but the reality is actually totally different.

E alla fine dell’indagine quello che forse ho capito è che l’origine della violenza sta tutta nella disumanizzazione della società, quando si perde una caratteristica umana, ci si scorda di essere esseri umani è più facile poi impugnare un’arma e premere un grilletto per poco.
What I began to realise by the end of my investigation was that the origins of the violence lie entirely in the dehumanisation of that society. In other words, they have lost some human traits and have forgotten how to be human beings, so it has become extremely easy for them to grab a gun and pull the trigger for little or no money.

Il libro si apre con la storia di un capobanda di Medellin, il “Puma”, che porta con sé una serie di vizi che ho rintracciato in tante altre realtà.
The book begins with the story of a Medellin Cartel chief called “Puma” who carries with him a lot of baggage that I have come across in many other places.

Racconto la sua storia, il perché è entrato in un “Combo”, in una banda criminale colombiana di Medellin.
He tells us his story, the reasons why he got involved in one of the Guatemalan criminal gangs or “Combos” linked to the Medellin drug cartel.

Che cosa l’ha spinto a percorrere questa strada, e il sentimento che ho provato è stato di forte compassione.
And what drove him to travel down this path, and the overriding emotion I felt was that of extreme compassion.

Nonostante lui davvero è stato un uomo che ha commesso reati terribili, ha violentato donne, ha ucciso persone, ha trafficato droga, armi, eppure mi sembrava un essere umano.
Notwithstanding the fact that this man had indeed committed some terrible crimes in his time, including raping women, killing people trafficking drugs and smuggling weapons, he still came across as a normal human being.

Avevo conosciuto qualche giorno prima un sacerdote, sempre a Medellin, Juan Carlos Velazquez, davvero un sant’uomo, che mi disse che per capire il conflitto a Medellin , ma qualsiasi altro conflitto in Latino America dovevo umanizzare il conflitto, vedere anche gli assassini come esseri umani, e questa è stata davvero una grande dritta.
Just a few days earlier, also in Medellin, I had met a Priest called Juan Carlos Velazquez, a truly holy man who told me that in order to truly understand the Medellin conflict, or any of the other Latin American conflicts for that matter, I would have to humanise the conflict, in other words I would have to view the murderers as human beings, and this really was a major tip.

Ho iniziato così a dimenticarmi chi avevo di fronte, per provare a conoscerlo e trattarlo come essere umano e ho compreso che umanizzare i conflitti è l’unico modo per comprenderli , oltretutto è un modo anche per capire le possibilità che abbiamo per porre dei rimedi, per trovare delle soluzioni.
I therefore began to forget about the character of the person before me and instead to try to understand the person and treat him/her as a human being, at which point I understood that humanising the conflict is truly the only way to understand that conflict and, above all, to understand how to possibly remedy the situation and come up with appropriate solutions.

Durante il mio viaggio oltre a ricercare le origini del sicariato, e le ho trovate in tantissime realtà, ho fatto esattamente questo, ho ricercato le possibili soluzioni per contrastare un fenomeno così terrificante e credo di averne trovate alcune.
During the course of my trip, in addition to searching for the origins of the hired-killer culture, which by the way I found in any number of situations, I also searched for potential solutions to overcome such a terrifying phenomenon, and I think that I may indeed have found a few.

Paesi come la Colombia e il Guatemala, che sembrano molto distanti e così diversi dall’Italia hanno alcune cose comuni con il nostro Paese non soltanto al sud, ma in alcuni quartieri problematici, succedono cose simili a quelle che accadono a Città del Guatemala, probabilmente il prezzo per ingaggiare un assassino è più alto, ma le motivazioni che spingono a uccidere sono piuttosto simili e oserei dire che sono identiche.
Countries like Columbia and Guatemala, which seem so far away and so different to Italy, actually have many things in common with our Country, not only down in the South but also in a number of other problem areas where similar things occur to what is going on in Guatemala City, and although the cost of hiring a hit man is probably far higher over here, the reasons behind the killings are much the same, indeed I would probably be tempted to say that the reasons are exactly the same.

Bisogna evitare che anche in Italia si arrivi in futuro a scenari simili, così catastrofici come i latino americani.
Somehow we have to avoid allowing this kind of scenario, this Latin-American catastrophe to ever happen here in Italy.

Anche se io vedo una speranza, che c’è la possibilità di cambiare vita per questi ragazzi, ci sono movimenti in Latino America che lottano, che si organizzano per contrastare la criminalità, la diffusione del terrore.
However, I do see a glimmer of hope in terms of turning the lives of these children around and that is that there are a number of organisations in Latin America that fight and work together to combat crime and the spread of terror.

Anche in Italia dobbiamo iniziare a pensarci e, se volete, Passate parola.”
