Il guastafeste – Party-pooper

Inizio da oggi la pubblicazione di alcuni brani tratti dalla mia autobiografia, intitolata “Il guastafeste”, pubblicata da “Ponte alle Grazie” e scritta dal mio intervistatore, Gianni Barbacetto.
Today I am starting the publication of a few chunks from my autobiography, called “Il guastafeste” {The Party-pooper} published by “Ponte alle Grazie” and written by Gianni Barbacetto who interviewed me.

“Da Mani pulite all’Italia dei valori, dal lavoro di magistrato a quello di fondatore e capo di un partito politico, questo libro racconta la mia esperienza politica e umana.
“From Mani pulite to Italia dei Valori, from working as a magistrate to founding and leading a political party. This book tells the story of my political and human experience.

Molti si sono rammaricati perché lasciai anzitempo la magistratura e soprattutto lasciai a metà il lavoro di « pulizia ».
Many people bitterly regretted that I left the magistracy before my time was up and above all because I left the “clean up” work half done.

>>> Altri mi hanno rimproverato di aver sprecato l’occasione della mia vita quando, all’indomani delle dimissioni, non ne approfittai per diventare l’« uomo forte » che l’Italia sembrava attendere, presentandomi immediatamente alle elezioni.
Others told me off for having wasted the chance of a lifetime when straight after my resignation, I didn’t take advantage of being the «strong man» that Italy seemed to be waiting for and putting myself up for election straight away.

Altri ancora mi hanno snobbato da subito, convinti che durante l’inchiesta di Mani pulite ero stato un burattino nelle mani di altri e che quindi rappresentavo solo una bolla di sapone, un « soufflé » destinato a essere risucchiato nell’oblio nello spazio di un mattino.
Still others snubbed me immediately, as they were convinced that during “Mani pulite” I was a puppet in the hands of other people and that thus I just represented a soap bubble, a « soufflé » destined to be sucked into oblivion from one moment to the next.

Si sa, la vita pubblica è come il gioco del calcio: c’è chi gioca e chi, dagli spalti, è bravo a dar consigli o a criticare inferocito.
It is known that public life is like a game of football: there are those who play and those who stay in the stand and are good at giving advice or ferocious criticism.

La questione di fondo è, però, scegliere che cosa si vuole fare, se il giocatore o lo spettatore.
The fundamental question however, is to choose what you want to do, whether you want to be a player or a spectator.

E io ho scelto di fare il giocatore, con tutti i rischi e le incertezze del mestiere ma anche tutte le soddisfazioni che può dare l’orgoglio di essere in campo, pronti ogni volta a giocarsi la partita della vita.
And I have chosen to be a player with all the risks and the uncertainties of the role but also all the rewards that can come from the pride of being on the playing field, ready at every moment to play the game of my life.

E così, dopo aver appeso al chiodo la toga e aver rinunciato agli allori di Mani pulite, inchiesta per la quale ero stato riverito in tutto il mondo, non mi sono rassegnato ad appendere anche le scarpe.
And so, after I hung up the judges robes and renounced the glories of “Mani pulite”, the investigation for which I was revered in the whole world, I didn’t settle down to hang up my shoes as well.

Sia chiaro: non ho lasciato la magistratura per un capriccio o perché avevo progetti alternativi.
Let’s be clear. I didn’t leave the magistracy on a whim because I had other plans.

L’ho lasciata con la morte nel cuore perché costretto dalle circostanze: erano stati messi in discussione il mio operato investigativo e la mia dignità umana.
I left it with a heavy heart because I was obliged to do so by the circumstances:) there had been doubts about my investigational activities and about my human dignity.

Da magistrato ho fatto il mio dovere e ne ho pagato le conseguenze: ma se dovessi ritornare indietro rifarei l’inchiesta nello stesso modo e con la stessa determinazione di allora.
As a magistrate I did my duty and I paid the consequences: but if I had to go back I would redo the investigation in the same way and with the same determination as at that time.

Forse con qualche scaltrezza e qualche accorgimento in più: ma solo perché ora ho capito meglio i suoi rituali e le sue ipocrisie.
Perhaps with some extra cunning and worldly wisdom: but only because I have a better understanding of its rituals and its hypocrisies.

Così mi sono messo in politica.
That’s how I came into politics.

L’ho fatto a ragion veduta: da magistrato avevo scoperchiato i malanni del sistema politico e imprenditoriale italiano, dunque ho pensato che da politico avrei potuto contribuire a trovarne la cura, che per me consisteva e consiste ancora essenzialmente nel ricambio generazionale della classe politica.
I did it after due consideration: as a magistrate I had discovered the bad things of the political and business system, so I thought that as a politician I would have been able to contribute to finding the way to cure it. For me that was and still is essentially to get a change of generation of the political class.

Ho quindi iniziato una nuova avventura, ricominciando da zero:
Thus I have started a new adventure, starting from zero.

ho fondato un partito nuovo, ho girovagato di città in città, di piazza in piazza cercando di creare un nuovo ceto politico.
I founded a new party. I have gone about from one city to another, from town square to town square trying to create a new political class.

…Svolgendo il mio lavoro ho « guastato la festa » a politici maneggioni, ho interrotto il banchetto di imprenditori senza scrupoli, ho scoperchiato le pentole della Casta, ho sbugiardato speculatori e finanzieri d’assalto, ho ridicolizzato le mille ipocrisie di cui si circonda il Palazzo.
… By carrying out my work, I have been a “party pooper” for the politicians who are manoeuvring, I have put a stop to the banquets of the unscrupulous business people, I have taken the lid off the saucepans of the Caste, I have revealed the lies told by speculators and unscrupulous financiers. I have brought down ridicule on the thousands of hypocrisies that surround the Palace!

Per carità, niente di eccezionale, ho fatto solo il mio dovere: ma di questi tempi, fare il proprio dovere sembra sia diventata un’anomalia.”
True, nothing exceptional. I have just done my duty: but in recent times, doing your duty seems to have become an anomaly.”
