La meglio gioventù e l’eterna vecchiezza
The flower of our youth and eternal old age

Nei vicoli che portavano alla piazza del Duomo di Brescia sono sfilati ieri, insieme e contrapposte, la meglio gioventù e la vecchiezza della Repubblica.
Yesterday, parading through the tiny streets leading to Brescia’s piazza del Duomo, together but in opposition, there were the flower of our youth and theold ones of the Republic.

Maglioncini girocollo, pullover, cravatte e occhialini sul petto, capelli bianchi e pantaloni comodi dei pensionati si mescolavano con magliette, rasta, felpe, barbe incolte, bandiere multicolori di disoccupati, studenti, precari.
Crew necked sweater, pullover, tie and glasses round their necks, white hair and the comfy trousers that pensioners like, were side by side with T shirts, rastas, fleeces, untamed beards, the multi-coloured flag of people who are unemployed, students, of precariously employed.

I due gruppi erano impermeabili come l’olio con l’acqua.
The two groups were unmixable – just like oil and water.

Vasi incomunicanti.
Non-communicating vessels.

Two generation gaps. An abyss.

Nipoti e nonni
Grandchildren and grandparents.

Negli occhi delle persone anziane che si apprestavano al palco ad ascoltare i deliri di un vecchio di quasi ottant’anni c’era stupore, meraviglia.
In the eyes of the elderly people that rushed up to the stage to listen to the ravings of an old man (nearly 80 years old) there was amazement and wonder.

Non capivano le urla e la rabbia dei ragazzi.
They didn’t understand the shouts and the anger of the young people.

Per loro era normale che un condannato a quattro anni per frode fiscale attaccasse pubblicamente la magistratura scortato dal ministro degli Interni.
For them, it was normal that someone sentenced to spend four years in prison for tax fraud should publicly attack the magistracy and be accompanied by the Minister for Internal Affairs.

Una scena sudamericana nella città della strage di piazza della Loggia.
A scene like one in South America in the city that saw the slaughter in piazza della Loggia.

Per i ragazzi era uno sfregio, una provocazione.
For the young people, it was an affront, a provocation.

Per gli anziani rappresentava la normalità, quella conclamata ogni giorno dalle televisioni, il loro filtro faustiano di eterna giovinezza.
For the elderly people it represented normality, that acclaimed every day by the TV stations, their Faustian filter of eternal youth.

Lo smarrimento nei confronti della protesta era autentico.
The consternation in the face of the protest was authentic.

La società è ormai “divisiva” per usare un temine di moda.
By now, society is “divisive” to use a trendy term.

Da una parte coloro che hanno una pensione, che pagano l’IMU perché hanno una casa o due, che hanno potuto mantenere una famiglia, che hanno avuto un lavoro dipendente per tutta la vita, spesso qualche risparmio da parte.
On one side, there are those that have a pension, that pay IMU because they have one or two homes, that have been able to provide for a family, that have worked as employees all their life, and often have a bit of money put aside for savings.

Persone che, quando hanno affrontato la vita, ventenni, sapevano di avere un futuro.
People that, at 20 years old, when they were starting out in life, knew that they had a future.

Dipendeva solo da loro.
It all depended on them.

Dall’altra chi non ha letteralmente nulla.
On the other side, there are those who literally have nothing.

Spinti all’emigrazione.
Forced to emigrate.

Senza lavoro, casa, reddito, famiglia, speranze.
With no work, no home, no income, no family, no hopes.

I sommersi e i salvati.
The Drowned and the Saved.

L’Italia è un mondo per vecchi.
Italy is a world for old people.

Il suo presidente è il più longevo del mondo, in Parlamento dagli anni ’50, da prima dello Sputnik.
Its President is the one who has lived the longest in the whole world. He’s been in Parliament for 50 years.

Un Paese pietrificato.
A country turned to stone.

I giovani chiedono il conto.
The young people want to get the story.

Ne hanno diritto.
They have the right to know.

Lo sfascio non è colpa loro.
The collapse is not their fault.

Vedono sfilare nei palchi delle autorità i responsabili del disastro, strafottenti, protetti dalle forze dell’ordine, da ragazzi in divisa che, anch’essi, non ne possono più.
On the stage for the important people, they see those who are responsible for the disaster, the arrogant people, protected by the security forces, who are also young people in uniform who also know they can’t take it any more.

In mancanza di un patto tra generazioni non ci saranno sommersi e salvati, ma solo sommersi.
In the absence of a pact between the generations there will not be those who are drowned and those who are saved, just those who are drowned.

“Ah, se me lo dicevi prima” cantava Jannacci.
“Ah, if only you’d told me before” – the words of Jannacci.
