Passaparola – Culture is everything

“Una volta c’erano le guerre, i giovani partivano e ci lasciavano la pelle e saltavano tre generazioni di giovani.
“Once upon a time there were wars and the young men went off and died and three generation of young men got missed out.

Oggi questo fortunatamente non avviene più, però avviene un altro tipo di omicidio che è quello del loro avvenire.
Today, luckily, this no longer happens but another type of murder is taking place: the murder of the future.

L’impossibilità di realizzarsi attraverso il lavoro, questa è la cosa più atroce che succede in Italia a un giovane.
The impossibility of finding oneself through work, this is the most atrocious thing that is happening to a young person in Italy.

E allora l’unica cosa che io posso umilmente dire a loro, con molta umiltà, è io non credo alla speranza.
And so the only thing I can humbly say to them, with great humility, is that I don’t believe in hope.

Chi vive di speranza muore disperato.
Anyone who lives by hope, dies hopelessly.

“Vorrei parlare di un tema che per me è fondamentale, di cui sembrano interessarsi pochi e la grandissima maggioranza di Italia fregarsene assolutamente.
“I would like to talk about something that I feel is fundamental. Something that few people seem to take an interest in and most people in Italy seem to not care about at all.

Invece la cosa è seria.
But is is a serious matter.

Vorrei parlare della protezione della lingua italiana, dice:
I would like to talk about the protection of the Italian language. Someone said:

“Da quale pulpito viene la predica, scrivi in dialetto”
“Look who’s talking – and you’re writing in dialect”.

A parte che scrivo anche in italiano, però vedete il problema è un altro, che recentemente, qualche anno fa, in Europa si è deciso che le leggi, erano tradotte in inglese, tedesco e francese.
Apart from the fact that I also write in Italian, however, you see, that’s not the problem. The problem is that recently, well a few years ago, they decided that the European laws were to be translated into English, German and French.

Prima si traducevano in italiano e poi è stato escluso.
Before that, they were translated into Italian. Then Italian got excluded.

Non vengono più tradotte in italiano.
They’re no longer translated into Italian.

Se vuoi conoscere le leggi dell’Europa devi assolutamente sapere l’inglese o il francese, altrimenti nisba, te le devi fare tradurre.
If you want to know what Europe’s laws say, you just have to know English or French. Otherwise tough luck. You have to get them translated.

Questo significa una regressione della nostra lingua.
This means a step back for our language.

I nostri deputati europei avrebbero dovuto opporsi, e con forza, perché?
Our Deputies in Europe should have forcibly opposed this move. Why’s that?

Perché io avverto come dalla tecnologia dove l’uso di una terminologia di lingua inglese è corrente, si sia passati sempre di più alla adozione di parole inglesi anche nella vita comune.
Because I’m noticing that in the field of technology, English terminology is quite common. There’s ever more use of English words even in every day life.

Non solo, ma persino a politici adoperano per leggi italiane o norme italiane terminologie inglesi, “election day” e via di questo passo.
And not just there but even the politicians are using the English terminology for Italian laws or for Italian regulations, like “election day” and so on.

Che senso ha tutto questo?!
What’s the point of all this?!

E’ prima di tutto un provincialismo assoluto sentire parlare un presidente del Consiglio che adopera parole inglesi a me, italiano, fa impressione!
This is provincialism above all. You hear a President of the Council using English words and to me, an Italian, that makes a mark on me.

È come se il presidente del Consiglio inglese usasse parole italiane mentre parla al Parlamento!
It’s as though the British Prime Minister were to use Italian while speaking in Parliament.

È una follia! È una pura follia.
It’s madness! It’s pure madness.

Esistono parole italiane che significano esattamente la stessa cosa, perché non usare le parole italiane?
There are Italian words that mean exactly the same thing. Why not use the Italian words?

Nel campo della moda non ne parliamo, ormai si parla solo inglese.
Let’s not talk about the world of fashion. By now they only talk English.

È così che muoiono le lingue!
That’s how languages die!

Sapete quante lingue muoiono?
Do you know how many languages die?

Sei lingue ogni 15 giorni nel mondo, perché una lingua diventa e, fino a farla scomparire.
Six languages every 15 days in the world. A language becomes unused and then it dies.

Dio mio, noi abbiamo una tradizione letteraria fortissima, quella per fortuna non scomparirà.
My God, we have a really strong literary tradition. Fortunately, that will not disappear.

Ma si rischia di fare diventare l’italiano una lingua morta.
But there’s the risk of making Italian become a dead language.

Quindi io non sono, attenzione, un autarchico, come capitò ai tempi del fascismo, quando Wanda Osiris dovette cambiarsi il nome in Wanda Osiri, levando la esse finale, perché faceva straniero, o “Saint Luis Blues” diventava “Tristezza di San Luigi”, un delirio mentale insomma, ma una giusta difesa della lingua bisogna che sia fatta assolutamente.
Take care. I’m not an autarchic like there were in the fascist times, when Wanda Osiris had to change her name to Wanda Osiri, removing the final “s” because it sounded foreign, or “Saint Luis Blues” became “Tristezza di San Luigi”, which was a mental delirium, but I’m saying that a just defence of the language is absolutely necessary.

Noi abbiamo fatto una guerra infame ai dialetti, ma i dialetti sono la forza di una lingua.
We have waged a dreadful war against the dialects, but the dialects are the strength of a language.

Noi abbiamo questa rara cosa, che sono i dialetti, che altre nazioni e popoli non hanno.
We have this rare thing, the multitude of dialects that other nations, other peoples, don’t have.

La lingua è nazionale, è come un albero, che affonda le sue radici in tutta l’Italia e trae dalla periferia verso il centro le parole.
The language is national. It’s like a tree, that sends out its roots into the whole of Italy and it draws in words towards the centre.

Le parole così una volta diventavano lingua, dalla periferia al centro.
Once upon a time, this is how the words became the language – from the periphery to the centre.

E erano come una linfa vitale per l’albero della lingua.
And they were like life-giving sap for the tree of language.

Producevano foglie, vive.
They produced live leaves.

Se il terreno su cui si nutre la radice dell’albero è inquinato da parole straniere le foglie diventano gialle, l’albero muore è questo il rischio che corriamo, non ora, certo, ma tra trent’anni sì!
If the land where the roots of the trees get their nutrients, if the land is polluted with foreign words, the tree will die and this is a risk that we are encountering, not now, for sure, but certainly in thirty years time!

E allora io vi invito a un minore provincialismo e al recupero delle bellissime parole della nostra bellissima lingua.
So I’m inviting you to have less provincialism and to retrieve some really beautiful words for our really beautiful language.

Io ho scritto, è stato pubblicato in questi giorni, un libro, che si intitola “Come la penso”.
I’ve written a book called “Come la penso” {How I see things} and it’s just been published.

In questo libro ci sono alcune cosine:
There are a few things in this book:

“Perché con la cultura si mangia?”
“Why – can you get to eat culture?

La cultura non è una cosa sacrale, una cosa da colti, per pochi, è di tutti!
Culture is not something sacred, something just for people of culture, for the few. It’s for everyone!

E poi che cosa è la cultura?
Then what is culture?

Non è solo la letteratura, ma la cultura è lavoro dell’operaio, è come lavora un impiegato, è come la pensa il capo condominio.
It’s not just literature, but the culture of a manual worker, how an office worker carries on their work, it’s about how the administrator of the condominium is thinking.

La cultura siamo noi!
Culture is us!

Perché noi siamo cultura, l’uomo è cultura.
Because we are culture.The human is culture.

Quindi, certo che poi ci sono forme più alte di cultura, ma quando sento che l’Italia è l’ultimo Paese europeo a spendere per la cultura, a me cascano le braccia, perché dico a che punto siamo arrivati?
Sure, there are higher forms of culture, but when I hear that Italy is the country that spends the least on culture in the whole of Europe, I’m stunned into silence, because – well – what have we come to?

Oltretutto c’è l’imbecillità di non capire che se tu spendi per la cultura, la cultura la tua spesa te la restituisce triplicata.
Above all there’s the stupidity of not understanding that if you spend money on culture, then culture gives you back your money three-fold.

Perché spendere per la cultura significa tenere in piedi Pompei e non farla cadere a pezzi.
Because spending on culture means keeping Pompei on its feet and not letting it fall to pieces.

Significa dare la possibilità di tenere aperti musei, sempre e comunque.
It means making it possible to keep museums open at all times and in all circumstances.

Significa sfruttare le nostre opere d’arte, anche in senso turistico.
It means exploiting our works of art even for the tourist industry.

Io non so se faccio cultura pubblicando libri, ma comunque scrivo libri e nel momento in cui in Germania ho venduto sei milioni di copie e mi scrivono dalla Germania:
I don’t know whether I’m contributing to culture by publishing books. When you think that I’ve sold six million copies in Germany and they are writing to me from Germany:

“Ma come è la Sicilia?
“But what’s it like in Sicily?

Io vorrei andare in questo posto, vorrei andare”, e io certe volte nelle risposte mi trasformo in una sorta di operatore turistico.
I would really like to go there”, and at times, when I reply I’m turning myself into some sort of tourist operator.

Io non so se è un fatto culturale, ma un fatto di soldi che rientrano in Italia sicuramente lo è attraverso il turismo.
I don’t know whether it’s a matter of culture, but it is a matter of money that definitely comes back to Italy through tourism.

Facciamo Montalbano in televisione… racconto un’altra storia.
Let’s do Montalbano on TV … I’ll tell another story.

Lo prende la BBC e lo manda in prima serata in Inghilterra.
The BBC takes it and shows it in the UK in the early evening.

Non ci crederete!
You won’t believe it!

Non ricevo una lettera da un organizzatore turistico inglese che fa due voli charter per la Sicilia con quelli che avevano visto Montalbano?!
Am I not getting a letter from a British tourist company that is sending two charter planes to Sicily full of tourists who have seen Montalbano?!

La cultura fa mangiare, i soldi che si investono in cultura, torno a ripetere, vengono restituiti allo Stato almeno triplicati.
Culture provides food. I’ll keep on saying – the money invested in culture gives a threefold return to the State.

Quindi la cultura oltre a elevare l’uomo intellettualmente, fa bene anche dal punto di vista delle finanze delle Stato italiano.
Thus as well as raising up the person intellectually, it is also beneficial to the finances of the Italian State.

A me queste cose di dare messaggi ai giovani non mi va tanto giù, perché a parte il fatto che ho 88 anni e uno che dà consigli ai giovani presume a 88 anni di capire i giovani di oggi, e è un atto di presunzione.
This idea of giving advice to young people isn’t really very comfortable for me, partly because I’m 88 years old and someone giving advice to young people is presuming at 88 years of age to understand the youth of today.That is presumptuousness.

Per questo io non faccio mai né il buon nonno, cerco sempre di evitarlo accuratamente.
This is why I don’t want to act like a lovely grandpa. I always try to avoid that assiduously.

Oggi però una cosa posso vedere, non come la pensano, perché se la pensano per i fatti loro e fanno bene.
Today, however, there is something that I can see, not how they are thinking because they do their own thinking about their own affairs and that’s how it should be.

Per capire i giovani di oggi bisognerebbe essere loro contemporanei e la cosa mi è assolutamente negata.
To understand today’s young people, you need to be their contemporaries, and that’s something I’m not.

Io sono contemporaneo della bomba atomica, della televisione e della minigonna e mi fermo alla minigonna che mi sembra un bel soffermarsi.
I’m a contemporary of the atomic bomb, of the TV and the miniskirt and I stop with the miniskirt that seems a good place to linger.

Oltre mi inizia a diventare difficile, mi viene difficile il computer, internet non ne parliamo.
As well as that, things are beginning to get difficult for me. Let’s not talk about computers and the Internet.

Però è chiaro che una serie di contingenze economiche, sociali, finanziarie, politiche, sta ammazzando i giovani di oggi.
However, it’s clear that a series of economic, social, financial, and political circumstances are killing the young people of today.

Una volta c’erano le guerre, i giovani partivano e ci lasciavano la pelle e saltavano tre generazioni di giovani.
Once upon a time there were wars and the young men went off and died and three generation of young men got missed out.

Oggi questo fortunatamente non avviene più, però avviene un altro tipo di omicidio che è quello del loro avvenire.
Today, luckily, this no longer happens but another type of murder is taking place: the murder of the future.

Facciano conto di trovarsi su una zattera, ma devono assolutamente questa zattera portarla su una spiaggia, senza mai perdere, non la tenerezza, ma il coraggio e la forza che viene a loro dal fatto di essere giovani.
Think of being on a life raft. But you just have to get this life raft to a beach, while never losing, not tenderness, but the courage and the strength that comes to you because you are young.

Questo l’augurio che faccio loro, non perdere mai la forza e la fede nella loro gioventù.
This is what I wish for you: never lose the strength and the belief in your youth.

In quanto agli adulti, molti degli adulti sono responsabili della situazione di oggi.
As for the adults. Many of the adults are responsible for the situation we have today.

Quindi il consiglio che posso dare agli adulti assennati è quello di interessarsi assai di più alla vita politica seria, perché l’astensionismo peggiora le cose.
Thus a bit of advice that I can give to the sensible adults is to take quite a lot more interest in serious political life, because abstentionism makes things worse.

Partecipare alla vita pubblica e alla vita politica con le proprie opinioni è sempre e comunque un atto positivo.
To take part in public life and in political life with your own opinions is always something positive.

Quindi continuare a essere esistenti nella società.
Thus continue to exist in society.

Passate parola se lo ritenete opportuno e se non lo ritenete opportuno tacete.”
Spread the word if you think its appropriate and if you don’t think its appropriate, stay silent.”
