Egypt, massacres and democracy

In Egitto è avvenuto da tempo un colpo di Stato, ma nessuno sembra volerlo ammettere.
In Egypt there’s been a coup d’état, but it seems that no one wants to admit that it’s happened.

L’Occidente, Stati Uniti in particolare, si sono voltati subito da un’altra parte.
The West, and in particular the United States, immediately turned their backs.

La loro.
Towards themselves.

Morsi nominato primo ministro in regolari elezioni è stato deposto dopo manifestazioni di piazza nell’indifferenza generale.
Morsi became prime minister as a result of regular elections and amidst the indifference of the general public he was deposed after demonstrations out in the streets.

Using this measuring instrument, loads of governments in Europe would have had to resign.

I militari hanno preso il posto di Morsi senza nuove elezioni.
The military replaced Morsi without new elections.

Nessuno ha battuto ciglio.
No one batted an eyelid.

Ora è il tempo delle stragi, l’assassinio da parte dell’esercito di centinaia (forse migliaia) di civili che vogliono ripristinare la democrazia.
Now the army is slaughtering and assassinating hundreds (perhaps thousands) of civilians that want to bring back democracy.

Ma, ancora una volta, l’Occidente tace.
But, once more, the West is staying silent.

Al più lancia qualche flebile richiamo attraverso quella farsa in campo internazionale che si chiama UE.
It just about manages to raise its weak voice through that farce on the international stage that is the EU.

Gli Stati Uniti sono il salvadanaio d’Egitto.
The United States act as Egypt’s money box.

Ogni anno versano alle casse egiziane 1,3 miliardi di dollari.
Each year they pay out 1.3 billion dollars into Egyptian coffers.

Non è un atto di beneficenza.
That’s not an act of charity.

Questa montagna di denaro serve per lo sviluppo degli armamenti egiziani e a mantenere il trattato di pace tra Egitto e Israele.
That mountain of money is for the development of Egyptian weapons and to keep alive the peace treaty between Egypt and Israel.

Il principale interlocutore degli americani in Egitto è sempre stato l’esercito.
The main interlocutor for the Americans in Egypt has always been the army.

Se venisse riconosciuto il colpo di Stato, gli Stati Uniti dovrebbero ritirare gli aiuti e perdere gran parte del controllo sugli eventi futuri.
If the coup d’état were to be recognised, the United States would have to withdraw aid and it would lose much of the control over future happenings.

Morsi è stato sostenuto principalmente dai Fratelli musulmani, i cui membri sono massacrati in questi giorni per le strade e i loro corpi ammassati nelle moschee.
Morsi has mainly been backed by the Muslim Brotherhood, whose members are being massacred right now on the streets and their bodies are being piled up in the mosques.

L’ONU è un fantasma che ricorda per la sua inconsistenza la Società delle Nazioni di prima della guerra.
The UN is a phantom that brings back memories of the League of Nations before the war.

L’Occidente sempre pronto a condannare e a intervenire, anche con la forza, come è avvenuto in Libia, ora in parte sotto il controllo di Al Qaeda, (ma nessuno deve dirlo) o in Mali, per proteggere i suoi interessi, non vede, non sente, non parla.
The West is always ready to condemn and to intervene, even with force, as happened in Libya, now partially under the control of Al Qaeda, (but nobody must say so) and in Mali, to protect its own interests. It doesn’t see, it doesn’t hear, it doesn’t speak.

Chi ha ordinato la strage va processato da organismi internazionali come è avvenuto in Serbia.
Whoever ordered the slaughter should be put on trial by international bodies, as happened in Serbia.

Il governo dei militari va disconosciuto senza alcun distinguo.
The military government should not be recognised by anyone.

Nuove elezioni vanno indette al più presto.
New elections should be held as soon as possible.

Per l’Occidente la democrazia è un concetto relativo, che si applica caso per caso, quando gli conviene.
For the West, democracy is a relative concept, to be applied case by case, when it’s convenient.

Per i militari egiziani non si applica.
It’s not applied for the Egyptian military.

La polveriera Egitto rischia di travolgere ogni equilibrio in Medio Oriente e in tutto il Mediterraneo mentre l’Italia fa da comparsa.
The potentially explosive situation in Egypt risks overwhelming every measure of stability in the Middle East and in the whole of the Mediterranean while Italy just plays a marginal role.

Il ruolo che le riesce meglio.
The role that it plays best.
