Come nei romanzi gialli per capire quello che sta succedendo ora bisogna fare un passo indietro.
Just as it is for murder mysteries, you have to take a step back to understand what’s happening.

Tornare a quella notte né buia, né tempestosa di primavera quando si riunirono tre persone per decidere le sorti della legislatura.
Go back to that evening in spring, it wasn’t dark, nor was it stormy, but three people met up to decide on the outcomes for the legislature.

Ognuno di loro aveva qualcosa da guadagnare dalla partita a poker.
Each one of them had something to gain from the game of poker.

Napolitano la rielezione e, forse, la certezza della distruzione dei nastri delle sue conversazioni con Mancino, Bersani la presidenza del Consiglio per il pdmenoelle, Berlusconi la certezza dell’impunità.
For Napolitano it was re-election, and the certainty of the destruction of the tapes of his conversations with Mancino, for Bersani it was the office of the President of the Council for the PDminusL, and for Berlusconi it was the certainty of impunity.

Su questo ultimo dettaglio investigativo vale la pena di soffermarsi.
On this investigative detail, it’s worth stopping to ponder.

Altrimenti che senso aveva fare un governo intestato alla presidenza della Repubblica, che mai si è esposta come in questo caso?
Otherwise, what was the point in having a government attributed to the President of the Republic, who was never so exposed as in this case?

Per vederlo cadere rovinosamente per un processo e una condanna altamente probabile pochi mesi dopo?
To see him fall so calamitously for a trial and a conviction that was highly likely at that time and in fact happened a few months later?

Berlusconi ha la faccia di chi pensa “Chi mi ha fregato?”.

They have that undeniable fascination relating to winning contracts and armchairs.

E il terzo giocatore, Napolitano?
And the third player, Napolitano?

Lui ha perso la partita, ma si ostina a negarlo come chi avendo sempre vinto (o almeno pareggiato) non riesce a darsi pace per la sconfitta.
He has lost the match. But he continues to deny that. He’s like those who have always won (or at least drawn) and he cannot accept having lost.

Si alzi dal tavolo di gioco, e prima di uscire, spenga le luci del Quirinale.
