Lettera di Natale a un bambino non ancora nato
Christmas letter to an infant that’s not yet born

“Con che occhi ci vedrai?
“How will you see us?

Come ci giudicherai tra venti o trent’anni, tu che sarai figlio di un altro tempo, non so se migliore o peggiore di questo?
How will you judge us in twenty or thirty years time, you who’ll be the child of another moment in history, a time that will be better or worse than this one?

Non sei ancora nato, ma tutti noi, buoni e cattivi (ma esistono veramente queste due categorie?), stiamo costruendo il tuo futuro.
You are not yet born, but all of us, good and bad (but do these two categories really exist?), we are constructing your future.

Non sarai tenero nei tuoi giudizi, lo so.
You will not deliver your verdict with tenderness.I know that.

Le figure sbiadite dei cosiddetti leader di oggi ti sembreranno macchiette, incidenti della Storia, persone senza alcuna visione che purtroppo hanno disegnato, come potrebbe solo un artista pazzo, il tuo presente.
The faded figures of today’s so called leaders will seem like caricatures, accidents in history, people with no vision, who unfortunately, have designed your present day, as only a mad artist could.

>>> Ma forse sono pessimista.
But perhaps I’m a pessimist.

L’umanità cambierà di soprassalto.
Humanity will change suddenly.

Inventeremo nuovi paradigmi come è successo altre volte e tutto cambierà.
We’ll invent new paradigms as has happened in the past and everything will change.

Ritroveremo il senso di comunità, di umanità universale, cancelleremo le guerre, chiuderemo per legge le fabbriche di armi, faremo una lotta spietata alla povertà, alle malattie endemiche come la malaria e la tubercolosi.
Once more, we’ll find the sense of community, of universal humanity, we will get rid of wars, we will pass laws to close down weapon manufacturing, we will wage a ruthless battle against poverty, against endemic illnesses like malaria and TB.

La fame del mondo sparirà e il pianeta Terra non verrà più distrutto, sfruttato per ricchezze così enormi e così inutili nelle mani di pochi.
Hunger will disappear from the world and planet earth will no longer be destroyed, exploited for its wealth that is so vast and so useless in the hands of the few.

Perchè no?
Why not?

Perché non potrebbe succedere?
Why could that not happen?

Il tempo varrà più dell’oro e l’ambiente sarà sacro.
Time will be worth more than gold and the environment will be sacred.

I torrenti limpidi e l’aria piena di odori che abbiamo dimenticato.
The streams will be clean and the air will be full of smells that we have forgotten about.

Potremo rivedere le lucciole e l’Orsa Maggiore nel cielo delle città.
We’ll be able to see the fireflies and the Great Bear in the skies of the cities.

In questi anni, forse per te è difficile da capire, il denaro è al centro del mondo, qualcosa che non esiste domina le nostre esistenze.
Currently, perhaps for you this is difficult to understand, money is at the centre of the world, something that does not exist is dominating our existence.

Cos’è il denaro?
What is money?

Cosa sarà il denaro per te?
What will money be for you?

Ci considererai dei folli?
Will you think of us as mad?

Per riuscire a capire il passato dovrai decifrare termini simili ai geroglifici egiziani, in apparenza più semplici, in realtà incomprensibili come LTRO, FMI, MES, BCE, ESM.
In order to understand the past you will have to decipher terms that are similar to the Egyptian hieroglyphics, things that are apparently simple, but that are in reality just incomprehensible like LTRO, IMF, ESM, and ECB.

Se non ci riuscirai non preoccuparti, sono sigle, solo sigle, e si tratta di soldi, solo di soldi.
If you don’t manage to understand them, don’t worry, they are initialisms, just initialisms, and they’re about money, just money.

La civiltà, il pensiero stanno altrove.
Civilisation, and thinking are somewhere else.

So per certo che mi leggerai e che forse, per pura curiosità, cercherai di capire chi era Grillo, cos’è stato il MoVimento 5 Stelle, i suoi ragazzi, i parlamentari eletti per la prima volta dai cittadini, Casaleggio, la democrazia diretta, i nuovi populisti.
I know for certain that you will read my words and that perhaps out of curiosity, you will try to understand who Grillo was, what the 5 Star MoVement was, its young people, the parliamentarians elected for the first time from the citizens, Casaleggio, direct
democracy, the new populists.

Noi, parlo anche a nome della comunità che si è raccolta intorno al M5S, mi permetto questa licenza che spero mi verrà perdonata.
We, and here I’m speaking for the community that is gathered around the M5S, I’m allowing myself this freedom and I hope I’ll be forgiven.

I’m fond of you, even though we don’t know who you are, little Italian person of tomorrow.

Facciamo il possibile per regalarti un mondo un po’ migliore di quello in cui viviamo, che spesso ci fa orrore.
We’ll do what’s possible to give you a world that is a bit better than the one in which we live, a world that often horrifies us.
