Merry Christmas, mister President

Oggi è Natale, tempo di favole.
Today is Christmas, fairy-tale-time.

C’era una volta…. un re, direte voi.
Once upon a time there was a king, – that’s what you’ll be saying.

No, c’era un presidente della Repubblica.
No, there was a President of the Republic.

In quel Paese la monarchia non esisteva da tempo.
In that country the monarchy had not existed for some time.

Questo presidente era un uomo molto anziano, con le fattezze di un re scomparso.
This President was a very old man with the features of a dead king.

>>>  Il suo portamento, nonostante l’incedere dell’età, era regale, altero.
In spite of his advanced age, his demeanour, was regal and haughty.

Pur non essendo un re, regnava come un re.
Though he was not a king, he reigned like a king.

Viveva in una reggia che superava per sfarzo i palazzi dei reali d’Europa.
He lived in a palace whose sumptuousness surpassed the royal palaces of Europe.

Come un regnante nominava i suoi primi ministri, sempre però con il massimo rispetto delle istituzioni repubblicane, da lui perfettamente incarnate.
As a ruler he appointed his prime ministers, but always with the utmost respect for the institutions of the Republic of which he was the perfect embodiment.

La vita del presidente si era svolta da sempre nei palazzi del regno, pardon della Repubblica, sin dalla sua giovinezza.
The President had always lived in the palaces of the kingdom, oops – the Republic, ever since he was young.

La sua presenza in quei luoghi datava ad anni lontani quando la maggior parte dei suoi sudditi, pardon cittadini, non erano ancora nati e regnava su tutte le Russie un tiranno di nome Stalin che, per alcuni, era un sincero democratico.
His presence in those places dated back to distant years when most of his subjects, oops – citizens, were not even born and a tyrant called Stalin was reigning over all the Russian people, and for some people, he was a true democrat.

Il vecchio signore era una presenza intramontabile.
The old gentleman was a timeless presence.

Rassicurante.
Reassuring.

La parola del presidente era sacra, inviolabile, non poteva essere udita dai magistrati.
The word of the President was sacred, inviolable. He could not be questioned by magistrates.

Quando ciò accadeva e una sua conversazione con un indagato veniva registrata, il presidente faceva cancellare i nastri.
When this happened, and a conversation he had with a suspect was recorded, the President got the recording destroyed.

Il suo nome, come quello di Dio, non poteva essere nominato invano neppure nelle assise parlamentari.
Like God, it was not acceptable to take his name in vain even within a chamber of parliament.

Il presidente non aveva data di scadenza, pur prevista nella Costituzione, e si faceva rieleggere, per il bene del Paese.
The President had no end-date even though that was established by the Constitution, and he got himself re-elected, for the good of the country.

Alla sua seconda rielezione contribuì un signore pluri indagato, pluri processato, che venne condannato in via definitiva e poi allontanato dal Senato.
On the occasion of his second re-election he was helped by a gentleman who had been investigated for many crimes, who had been on trial many times, and who was ultimately convicted and later expelled from the Senate.

Ma il vecchio presidente come poteva saperlo?
But how could the old President know that?

Era quasi immortale, da lui però non si poteva pretendere anche l’onniscienza. Che sapesse ciò che tutti sapevano.
He was almost immortal, but he could not be expected to be omniscient as well, to know what everyone knew.

Il presidente si credeva indispensabile, unico baluardo prima dello sfascio della nazione, argine insostituibile.
The president believed that he was indispensable, the only bulwark before the collapse of the nation, an indispensable part of the structures.

Si circondava, come un vero re, di corti di saggi scelti con estrema oculatezza che avrebbero dovuto riscrivere le regole.
Like a true king, he surrounded himself with a court of shrewdly chosen wise men who were to rewrite the rules.

Dettava le condizioni del suo permanere ai primi ministri, ridotti alla stregua di gran ciambellani.
The terms of his continuing in office, he dictated to prime ministers, who were reduced to the level of great chamberlains.

Più invecchiava, più capiva che lui, solo lui, poteva invertire un percorso che si annunciava autodistruttivo.
The older he got, the more he understood that he was the only one to be able to turn back the self-destructing journey that had been embarked on.

Non capiva perciò la contrarietà e perfino l’astio che molti dei cittadini gli rivolgevano.
Thus he didn’t understand the aversion and even the resentment in relation to himself, felt by many citizens.

E’ vero che non si era opposto energicamente ad alcune leggi vergogna, come il lodo Alfano che persino un bimbo avrebbe bocciato come incostituzionale e che si era preso libertà che sconfinavano dal suo ruolo, ma era per il bene supremo del Paese.
It’s true that he did not energetically oppose any shameful laws, like the “lodo Alfano” that even a child would have rejected as unconstitutional, and it’s true that he took liberties to act beyond the scope of his role, but it was for the good of the country.

Ogni anno a Capodanno, da tempo immemore, il presidente faceva un discorso al popolo.
Each year, for time immemorial, at New Year, the President has always delivered a speech to the people.

Questa tradizione si ripete forse l’ultima volta.
This tradition will be repeated perhaps for the final time.

A gennaio lo aspetta una richiesta di impeachment per la sua decadenza.
In January there’s an impeachment request waiting for him.

Un atto spiacevole verso chi ha dedicato la sua intera esistenza alla patria.
An unpleasant action in relation to someone who has dedicated their whole life for the nation.

Un atto da parte di una forza politica a lui forse ignota, della cui presenza non si era accorto, il presidente non sentiva infatti i boom.
An action by a political force that he is perhaps not aware of, a group whose presence he has not noticed. The President, in fact, did not hear the “boom”.

L’impeachment è un atto d’amore per consentirgli di godere un meritato riposo con la sua famiglia e di trascorrere serene giornate sulle panchine del Pincio con dei vecchi amici.
The impeachment is an act of love to allow him to enjoy a well earned rest with his family and to pass some peaceful days on the benches situated on the Pincian Hill with some old friends.

Chissà se ringrazierà.
Who knows if he’ll be grateful.
