Thamsanqa Jantjie uomo dell’anno
Thamsanqa Jantjie – man of the year

Uno schizofrenico, con tendenze a scoppi di violenza, che vede gli angeli, che parla solo lo Xhosa, una delle 11 lingue ufficiali del Sudafrica, è l’uomo dell’anno.
A man who suffers from schizophrenia, who has violent tendencies, a person who sees angels, who only speaks Xhosa, one of the 11 official languages of South Africa, is the man of the year.

Si chiama Thamsanqa Jantjie ed è stato l’interprete ufficiale dall’inglese al lingua dei segni durante il solenne memorial nel grande stadio in onore di Nelson Mandela.
He’s called Thamsanqa Jantjie and he was the official English to sign language interpreter in the massive stadium during the solemn memorial in honour of Nelson Mandela.

Thamsanqa non conosce però l’inglese.
However, Thamsanqa doesn’t know English.

Il ministro sudafricano Hendrietta Borgopane-Zulu ha ammesso “la lingua inglese è un po’ troppo per lui”.
South African Minister Hendrietta Borgopane-Zulu admitted “the English language is a bit too much for him”.

Thamsanqa non conosce neppure il lingua dei segni.
Thamsanqa doesn’t even know sign language.

Lo stesso ministro ha ammesso che “non è un interprete professionale”.
The Minister herself admitted that “he’s not a professional interpreter”.

Thamsanqa was paid 77 dollars an hour by the South African government for his performance with presidents and prime ministers who came from all over the world to honour Mandela.

I suoi gesti disconnessi come quelli di una marionetta impazzita sono proseguiti per l’intera giornata delle celebrazioni.
His gestures that were disconnected like those of a maddened puppet went on for the whole day of celebrations.

Obama e Ban Ki-moon parlavano e lui gesticolava alle loro spalle senza che vi fosse alcuna protezione per il presidente degli Stati Uniti e per il segretario dell’ONU.
Obama and Ban Ki-moon were talking and he was gesticulating behind them without there being any protection for the President of the United States or for the Secretary-General of the United Nations.

Sembravano tornati i bei tempi della Gialappa’s Band a commentare le partite di calcio.
It seemed like the return of the great times with “Gialappa’s Band” and their commentary on football matches.

Uno spettacolo seguito da decine di migliaia di persone allo stadio nel grande schermo e da centinaia di milioni di persone in televisione.
It was an event followed by tens of thousands of people who were in the stadium, by those watching on big screens and by hundreds of millions of people watching on TV.

Thamsanqa era sul podio riservato ai Vip, in un vestito scuro, una cravatta adeguata e un cartellino della sicurezza con la scritta: “Funerali di Stato”.
Thamsanqa was on the stage reserved for VIPs. He was wearing a dark suit, a decent tie and he had a security badge saying: “State Funerals”.

Gli interpreti professionali si sono sentiti oltraggiati, ma Thamsanqa, che poteva tranquillamente sparare o accoltellare qualunque presidente gli capitasse a tiro, ha espresso la sua soddisfazione prima di essere internato :
Professional interpreters were outraged, but Thamsanqa, who could have easily shot or knifed any president who happened to be within range, expressed his satisfaction before being admitted to a psychiatric hospital:

“Nello stadio ho visto gli angeli, ero in preda di allucinazioni.
“In the stadium I saw angels, and I was hallucinating.

Ho capito che il problema era lì.
I understood that that was the problem.

Talvolta io divento violento. Vedevo quelle cose che mi incalzavano.
At times I become violent. I was seeing things chasing me.

Ero in una posizione difficile.
I was in a difficult position.

Il presidente e tutti gli altri erano armati.
The president and all the other people were armed.

Erano tutti intorno a me.
They were all around me.

Ho avuto un attacco di panico”.
I had a panic attack”.

George Orwell disse che:

“Nel tempo dell’inganno universale dire la verità è un atto rivoluzionario”, ma Thamsanqa è andato oltre la verità e oltre la menzogna.
“In a time of universal deceit – telling the truth is a revolutionary act”, but Thamsanqa went beyond truth and beyond lies.

Tutto quello che vedete è falso o forse vero, ma non importa ormai a nessuno.
Everything you see is false or perhaps true, but anyway it doesn’t matter to anyone.

La vita è diventata pura scenografia.
Life has become pure scenography.

Per questo Thamsanqa merita il titolo di uomo dell’anno.
This is why Thamsanqa deserves the title of man of the year.
