Significa in tempi brevi un’agricoltura non più in grado di nutrire decine di milioni di persone.
What that means is that, in the short term, the area’s agricultural system will no longer be able to feed tens of millions of people.

Una situazione di stress molto più grave di quella che causò la seconda guerra mondiale e in una regione dove quattro stati posseggono bombe nucleari: India, Pakistan, Russia e Cina.” Grammenos Mastrojeni

Io studio il degrado ambientale e mi sono reso conto che si è creata una situazione di saturazione che ci porterà presto a uno scenario molto difficile.
I study environmental degradation and I have realised that we have reached saturation point and that will soon lead to a very difficult scenario.

>>> Mi batto per i miei figli, non per i miei nipoti o pronipoti, perché i grossi guai sono vicini e dobbiamo prendere presto provvedimenti.
I am fighting for my children, not my grandchildren or great grandchildren, because we are on the verge of major problems and we need to do something about them very soon.

Ci troviamo a un bivio.
We are currently standing at a crossroads.

Diverse forme di degrado ambientale, in particolare i cambiamenti climatici, hanno assunto proporzioni tali da sconquassare gli equilibri.
Various kinds of environmental degradation, particularly climate change, have become such a serious problem that they have the capacity to upset the delicate balance of nature.

Se non c’è equilibrio, la regolarità delle stagioni per esempio, delle piogge, diventa impossibile pianificare e organizzare la convivenza sociale, economica e civile.
If there is no balance, for example normal seasonal changes and rainfall, it makes it impossible to plan and organise our social, economic and public life.

Siamo vicini a un punto di svolta.
We are fast reaching a turning point.

Il riscaldamento, che abbiamo alimentato noi, cresce sempre di più.
Global warming, for which we ourselves are responsible, is getting steadily worse.

Abbiamo di fronte scenari che aumentano di oltre i due o tre gradi di riscaldamento medio globale e a questa situazione gli scienziati associano la sesta estinzione globale di massa nella natura, e i politici prevedono conflitti, guerre, carestie, instabilità.
We are facing a situation in which the average global temperature is likely to rise by two or three degrees, which the scientists suggest could lead to a third global mass extinction in nature and the politicians anticipate conflicts, wars, famine and instability.

Un esempio: a causa del riscaldamento globale si sta sciogliendo il permafrost, le terre gelate delle regioni artiche.
Let’s look at one example: the permafrost or frozen land of the arctic regions is melting due to global warming.

Il permafrost contiene sedimenti di materiali organici rimasti lì per millenni che quando sono esposti all’aria e al sole si decompongono e liberano metano.
That permafrost contains sediments and organic materials that have laid there for millennia, however, as soon as these materials are exposed to the air and to sunshine they begin to decompose, releasing Methane.

Il metano ha una potenza, come gas serra, sei volte superiore all’anidride carbonica.
As one of the greenhouse gasses, methane is six times more damaging than carbon dioxide.

Il permafrost si scioglie, libera metano, il metano provoca più riscaldamento, quindi più permafrost si scioglie e via dicendo.
So the permafrost melts, it releases Methane gas, which in turn causes more global warming, so more permafrost starts melting, and so on, it’s a vicious circle.

In questo scenario noi, abituati a pensare all’ambiente naturale come a qualcosa separato, verremo fatalmente coinvolti.
In this kind of scenario, we who are used to viewing the natural environment as something totally separate from ourselves, will instead find ourselves fatally involved.

Una possibilità da considerare molto seriamente: lo scioglimento dei ghiacci dell’Himalaya.
One possibility that we have to take extremely seriously is the melting of the Himalayan icecaps.

Questo significa che tutto il sistema di irrigazione del sud continente indiano, del sud est asiatico, dell’Asia centrale andrà in tilt.
It means that the entire irrigation system of the south Indian continent, south-east Asia and central Asia is going to go into tilt.

La differenza è che lo sappiamo e quindi possiamo evitare una situazione del genere, però dobbiamo prendere i provvedimenti.
The difference is that now we know what is happening and we are therefore better able to avoid such a situation, but we have to do something about it now.

Diverse proiezioni indicano intorno al 2030 un possibile punto di non ritorno, un momento in cui avremo innescato così tante modifiche che l’equilibrio terreste si sposterà verso una configurazione nuova.
Various forecasts indicate that by 2030 we will reach a possible point of no return, namely the point at which we will have set in motion so many changes that the environmental balance will move towards a totally new configuration.

Ho scritto un libro: “L’Arca di Noe – Per Salvarci Tutti Insieme” (Ed. Chiarelettere).
I have written a book entitled “L’Arca di Noe – Per Salvarci Tutti Insieme” (Ed. Chiarelettere) (Literally: “Noah’s ark – To Save ourselves All Together”).

È uno strumento di divulgazione per parlare alla gente e affrontare il problema.
It is a tool with which to talk to people and to address the problem.

Dobbiamo considerare una verità: ciò che è buono per noi, come individui, lo è anche per il pianeta.
We have to consider one truth in particular, namely that, that which is good for us as individuals, is also good for the planet.

Illustro giusto un fatto normale, ma straordinario:
Let me point out just one single but exceptional fact:

se ci nutriamo secondo la piramide alimentare consigliata, ciascun alimento nelle proporzioni che ci rendono più sani, ci troveremo a consumare poche proteine animali e molti alimenti vegetali.
if we stick to a diet that is in keeping with the recommended diet pyramid, in other words if we eat the recommended daily intake of each kind of foodstuff in the kind of proportion that makes us healthier, we will find that we will be eating little animal protein and lots of vegetables.

Se ci nutriamo in questo modo produciamo il minore impatto ecologico.
If we eat in this way our ecological impact will be far less.

Inoltre creiamo anche giustizia, perché lasciamo la disponibilità della giusta quota di proteine a chi ne ha un accesso limitato.
Furthermore, we will also ensure justice in that we will leave sufficient available protein for those who have limited access to it.

Evitiamo la polarizzazione del mondo tra un Occidente ricco e obeso e un Sud del mondo povero e denutrito, e così alla fine costruiamo anche la pace.
We will avoid global polarisation between the wealthy and obese West and the poor and undernourished East, so we will also be contributing to ensuring peace on earth.

Non dobbiamo scoraggiarci, possiamo salvare l’ambiente.
We mustn’t lose hope because we can indeed save the environment.

Se diventiamo alleati dell’ambiente non salveremo solo l’ambiente, ma costruiremo anche un futuro di giustizia, pace e stabilità per noi.
If we become allies of the environment, we won’t only be saving the environment but we will also be building a just, peaceful and stable world for ourselves.

E’ importante,  la coscienza della gente sarà quella che muoverà tutta la macchina.
It’s important because people’s conscience is what will move the entire machine.

Passate parola, passatela veramente, è urgente, assolutamente urgente.
Spread the word, really spread it, it’s urgent, really really urgent.
