La popolazione mondiale continua a crescere e le abitudini alimentari dei Paesi emergenti come Cina e Brasile stanno cambiando rapidamente integrando nella dieta un maggior consumo di carne e cereali.
The world’s population continues to grow and as the eating habits of people in developing countries like China and Brazil are changing rapidly, they are beginning to include more meat and cereals in their diets.

La terra per gli allevamenti e le coltivazioni è una risorsa finita e la corsa per impossessarsi di appezzamenti di terreno, acqua e animali è già in pieno svolgimento, con la Cina a fare la parte del leone.
Land for cultivating crops and raising livestock is a finite resource and the race to get hold of pieces of land, water and animals is already in full swing, with China grabbing the lion’s share.

Il grande gioco del cibo è in atto, chi rimane fuori è perduto.
The big food game is already going full speed ahead and anyone who is left out at this stage is lost.

Francesco Galietti nel suo libro Pappa Mundi racconta come il cibo sia diventato uno degli elementi principali delle relazioni internazionali.
In his book entitled Pappa Mundi, Francesco Galietti talks about how food is becoming one of the main issues in International relations.

L’abbiamo intervistato per saperne di più.
We interviewed him to find out more.

Since we’re dealing with a market here, as always it is dictated by two factors, namely supply and demand, both of which are constantly changing.

Per quanto riguarda la domanda, ovviamente il convitato di Pietra di tutti i dibattiti sul cibo è la Cina, il dragone cinese.
As far as demand is concerned, obviously the big daddy of all topics of debate on this issue is China, the Chinese Dragon.

Non è che la popolazione sia aumentata a dismisura, quello che però sta cambiando e molto velocemente è la proporzione della sua classe media in rapida formazione, rispetto al totale.
It’s not that the country’s population is increasing disproportionately, but what is changing, and very fast too, is the ratio of its very fast growing middle class to its total population.

Desidera assumere tutta una serie di prerogative, compresi gusti, mode, desideri, capricci che hanno delle ripercussioni alimentari fortissime.
This means that there is now a whole range of new prerogatives, including tastes, fashions, desires and wants, all of which have very serious repercussions on foods.

La carne per loro era quella cosa che solo i privilegiati gustavano in esclusivi ristoranti e adesso che se lo possono permettere lo vogliono anche loro.
For these people, meat used to be something that only the privileged could enjoy in the exclusive restaurants but now that they can afford it too, they also want it.

La riserva strategica dei maiali
Strategic pork reserves

Per esempio SmithField è il più grosso porcaro al mondo.
For example, SmithField is the largest global piggery.

E’ una società americana, produce, alleva maiali, è stato oggetto di acquisizione cinese di recente;
It is an American company that breeds and raises pigs and just recently it was bought out by the Chinese.

che è finita al vaglio dei militari americani che increduli non capivano cosa venissero a fare investitori cinesi a comprarsi maiali in America;
This acquisition came to the attention of the American Military, who were absolutely incredulous and couldn’t understand why on earth Chinese investors would come to America to buy pork.

e altrettanto increduli hanno dovuto verificare che in Cina c’è una dottrina su questo, tant’è che la Cina ha teorizzato la Strategic Pork Reserve, la necessità che la Cina mantenga un determinato stoccaggio di maiali.
They were equally incredulous when they discovered that China has a specific doctrine in this regard, so much so that they have come up with the so-called Strategic Pork Reserve, in other words a way of making sure that China always maintains a certain stock of pork.

Poi c’è un’altra componente che è l’ansia di sfamarsi che hanno gli investitori medio-orientali.
Then there is also another component, namely the food anxiety that Middle-East investors have.

In Medio Oriente, nella sua grande varietà è e rimane in tutto e per tutto un enorme scatolone di sabbia.
Notwithstanding its great variety, the Middle-East is and remains little more than a huge sandbox.

Questo fa sì che i petrol-sceicchi cerchino ciò di cui sono privi e lo vanno a cercare dovunque nel mondo.
This means that the petrol sheiks are looking for that which they don’t have, and they go looking for it all over the world.

Aveva fatto una tale incetta di risaie in giro per il mondo da divenire l’Arabia Saudita il sesto produttore mondiale di riso!
They have created such a huge expanse of rice paddies that Saudi-Arabia has now become the world’s sixth largest rice producer!

C’è la paura di trovarsi di colpo privi di cibo per la popolazione, soprattutto per la popolazione lavoratrice che spesso e volentieri è popolazione disagiata che proviene dal Pakistan e dall’Asia, quindi nel caso del Medio Oriente abbiamo la ricerca di ciò che non si ha.
There is a general fear of finding ourselves without any food for our people, above all the working people who are most often the disadvantaged ones that come from Pakistan and ’Asia, so in the case of the Middle-East, the search is on for what they don’t have.

Terza componente importante nel grande gioco del cibo è il cibo come arma.
The third important component in the big food game is the use of food as a weapon of war.

Le sanzioni della Russia sul cibo
Russian food sanctions

Putin ha deciso di rispondere alle sanzioni occidentali con delle contro sanzioni sul cibo, per noi italiani è una tragedia, perché tanti saluti alle robuste esportazioni di Grana Padano verso la Russia e di altre leccornie per palati oligarchi.
Putin has decided to counter western sanctions with counter-sanctions on food, which is a real tragedy for us Italians because it means bye-bye to our significant exports of Grana Padano to Russia, as well as other goodies for the oligarchy’s palates.

Di colpo abbiamo delle eccedenze che stanno a marcire nei magazzini e quindi apriti cielo.
We suddenly find ourselves with surpluses that are sitting and rotting away in our warehouses so all hell is breaking loose.

È un gioco che si fa sempre più complesso:
It is a game that is becoming increasingly complex:

il consumatore oggi non è più l’imprenditore inerte che accettava tutto quello che gli veniva scodellato ma è un soggetto con gusti, preferenze, capacità di intelligence che usa molto dinamicamente le tecnologie.
today’s consumer is no longer the motionless businessman that simply accepted whatever was dished up for him but rather an individual with tastes, preferences and intelligence, and who uses technology in a very dynamic manner.

Cosa fanno le lobby?
What are the lobbies doing?

Adesso c’è una tendenza nuova che la grande sfida dei produttori e dei distributori;
Now there is a new trend, a huge challenge for producers and distributors.

che vide contrapposti da una parte le lobby alimentari, produttori, distributori, marketing, pubblicità e dall’altra gli Stati.
One the one hand there is the food lobbies, producers, distributors, marketers and advertisers and on the other hand the Governments.

Cosa c’entrano gli Stati?
But what do the Governments have to do with it you ask?

Perché incominciano a subire pesanti conseguenze dall’alimentazione della popolazione, c’è una presa di consapevolezza sempre maggiore.
Well, because they are facing huge consequences if they cannot feed their people, there is an increasing awareness of the problem amongst Governments.

Mc Kinsey ha recentemente fatto un suo report, in cui analizza gli effetti sulla spesa pubblica del consumo inappropriato di cibo;
Mc Kinsey recently published a report in which they analyse the effects of inappropriate food consumption on public spending.

per cui gente che mangia male, avrà delle patologie più avanti nel corso della propria vita, queste patologie impatteranno soprattutto i sistemi basati su sanità pubblica, questa cosa, soprattutto con l’allungarsi della vita, fa scricchiolare i conti pubblici!
In other words, where people eat bad food, there will be medical consequences at some stage during their lives and these ailments will impact above all on public healthcare systems and that, in conjunction with the increase in life expectancy, makes public spending costs groan!

E’ il caso dell’Italia, è proprio il caso di dirlo, hanno tutto l’interesse a evitare che la popolazione mangi male.
This is what’s happening here in Italy, it must be said, so they very much have a vested interest in ensuring that people avoid eating badly.

Il rapporto di Mc Kinsey non è che uno di questi, che gli stati si costituiranno come contro lobby e quindi ne vedremo delle belle.
The Mc Kinsey is nothing other than one of these and the governments will step up as counter-lobbies, so we’re going to see some doozies.

Il TTIP e il mercato senza regole
The TTIP and the unregulated market

Il Ttip è una cosa di proporzioni gigantesche, rientra in uno schema complessivo di unitarietà dell’occidente, se si vuole.
The TTIP is something huge. It forms part of an overall scheme of western unity, if you will.

E’ un processo che è stato per lungo tempo sincronizzato con il suo omologo orientale, il Tpp.
It is a process that has been synchronised with its oriental equivalent, the TPP;

Il Tpp ha proceduto con tempi molto più rapidi.
however, the TPP has proceeded far more rapidly.

Nel caso occidentale sono in movimento lobby potenti, quella alimentare è ovviamente una di queste.
In the case of the west, some really powerful lobbies are on the move and the food lobby is obviously one of them.

Adesso constatando i rallentamenti nei negoziati, gli americani stanno per fare una sorta di porte aperte i Ttip in cui spiegano i benefici di un mercato comune transatlantico a chi non li conosce o a chi ha dei pregiudizi.
Now, seeing the delays in the negotiations, the Americans are out to adopt a kind of open cards policy regarding the TTIP, whereby they are explaining the benefits of common transatlantic markets to those who don’t know about them or are sceptical.

La partita è molto ampia e sicuramente non ne vedremo la conclusione in tempi strettissimi.
The game is huge and we certainly won’t be seeing the end of it anytime soon.

L’Italia può alimentare un dibattito per tante ragioni, intanto e perché siamo un luogo di consumo e produzione di cibo e trasformazione di cibo di alta qualità.
Italy has a major role to play in this debate for many reasons, not least of which because this Country is a both consumer as well as a producer and processor of high quality foodstuffs.

L’Italia è un terreno di conquista sul cibo, il nostro fondo strategico ha il cibo come oggetto negli statuti delle sue joint venture con i fondi sovrani stranieri.
Italy is a land of conquest when it comes to food and our strategic fund is key in the statutes of the joint ventures with the foreign sovereign funds.

Se l’Italia fosse un paese con progettualità, con capacità strategica probabilmente cercherebbe di fare tesoro dell’Expo, magari di lanciare un Autority sulla food security, poiché siamo scoperti così fragili sul food;
If Italy was a Country of planners and we had the necessary strategic ability, we would probably try to really exploit the EXPO and perhaps launch a food security Authority since we are exposed and fragile in terms of food.

poiché l’improvvisa mancanza di food ci va vivere incubi e probabilmente è un elemento di rischio da monitorare e a cui dare pagelle.
Furthermore, since a sudden lack of food is the stuff that nightmares are made of, it is a risk that should probably be officially monitored and assessed on an ongoing basis.

L’Italia che ospita tra l’altro tutto il polo alimentare delle Nazioni Unite a Roma, potrebbe veramente aspirare a creare una food security Autority ma va fatta per bene come cosa.
Italy, which inter alia hosts the entire food hub of the United Nations in Rome, could truly aspire to create a food security Authority, but this kind of thing has to be done right.
