Tom Sawyer is a 1930 American drama film directed by John Cromwell.

The screenplay by Grover Jones, William Slavens McNutt, and Sam Mintz is based on the 1876 novel The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain.
La sceneggiatura di Grover Jones, William Slavens McNutt e Sam Mintz è basata sul romanzo “Le avventure di Tom Sawyer” scritto da Mark Twain nel 1876.

The film was the third screen adaptation of the Twain novel, following silent versions released in 1907 and 1917.
Il film costituì il terzo adattamento cinematografico del romanzo di Twain dopo le due versioni “mute” uscite nel 1907 e 1917.

It was made on location at the Paramount Ranch in Agoura, California.

Plot
Trama

After arguing with his sweetheart, Becky Thatcher, Tom Sawyer seeks solace from his friend Huck Finn, who tells him about a mysterious cure for warts that requires them to visit the local cemetery at midnight.
Dopo una discussione con la sua innamorata, Becky Tatcher, Tom Sawyer cerca consolazione presso il suo amico Huck Finn, il quale gli parla di un misterioso rimedio per le verruche che richiederebbe una loro visita al cimitero locale a mezzanotte.

While there they witness a murder committed by Injun Joe, who convinces Muff Potter, who also was there but in an inebriated state, that he is guilty of the crime.
Mentre erano lì, i due assistono ad un assassinio commesso da Injun Joe, il quale convince Muff Potter, anche lui presente sebbene in uno stato di ubriachezza, che è lui il reale colpevole dell’ azione criminale.

Tom and Huck promise each other they will not divulge what they have seen.

When Tom is caught lying about stealing his half-brother Sid’s crabapples, his Aunt Polly punishes him by making him whitewash the fence on a Saturday morning.
