Un Paese senza gravità
A country without gravity

Today the arrest of Balducci, President of the High Council of Public Works and the resignation of Bertolaso.

Yesterday Ciancimino’s declarations about the creation of Forza Italia with Provenzano’s blessing.

Nulla ci turba.

Nothing disturbs us.

The country is in a state of “oneiric trance”.

Italy is a country without gravity, that challenges the laws of physics.

Leggero.
Light.

Anything that happens has a relative importance or no importance.

L’italiano non pensa, funziona.
The Italian does not think, but functions.

Quello che è vero ora sarà falso domani e viceversa.

What is true today will be false tomorrow and vice versa.

In una sequenza senza fine.

In an endless sequence.

The Italian does not trust anyone and above all himself.

Quando qualcuno lo inganna è soddisfatto.

When someone cheats, he is satisfied.

Ha l’ennesima conferma delle sue intuizioni.

He has the umpteenth confirmation of his intuitions.

This goes for what relates to him as well.

Se sbaglia, si perdona subito.

If he makes a mistake, he forgives himself straight away.

The most varied of excuses, that he has used to absolve himself since birth, are never lacking, from (always useful) “lack of alternatives” to “everyone does it”.

The Italian lives in a place that he calls Italy, or if he is brave “fatherland””

In reality he doesn’t know the history or the geography.

Sa quello che deve sapere.

He knows what he has to know.

The rest hamper him, ties him down, keeps him anchored to the ground.

The mafia, the power of the clergy, the Freemasons led astray, are topics that give him urticaria.

If millions of people vote for Berlusconi, there must be a reason.

If he doesn’t know what it is, it doesn’t matter.

Basta che la sappiano gli altri.
As long as the others know.

He’s an eternal small child that plays with big boys’ toys like a 4×4 or an escort when he can afford it, and if he can’t, then he is capable of threatening (only threatening) the revolution.

Anyone who knows his character can easily control him.

He’s not as you would think, undisciplined and anarchical.

Regalategli uno scacciapensieri e lo farete felice.

Give him a jew’s harp and you’ll make him happy.

The word that he hates the most is “responsibility”, if someone relieves him of his responsibilities he could become”Duce”, the President of the Council, or mayor of Salerno.

The one however, (the usual exception that proves the rule) who wants to accept his responsibilities is dangerous, and is judged to be a truly irresponsible person.

The Italian is not antisocial, when faced with an example of environmental destruction or theft from the community he gets sufficiently indignant to shout out for the competent authorities to intervene.

Anyway, if they do not intervene, why should he do so?

If Parliament denies the arrest of Cosentino, there will be a reason.

Demonstrating in the streets is sterile, why wave your arms around in the open air for our rights?

Meglio affidarsi a un segretario di partito.

It’s better to trust in a Party Secretary.

An “anybody” with the guarantee that anyway nothing will change.

Italy votes on its stomach, not with its head.

If the stomach stays full, the vote was the right one.

Don’t sing the National Anthem, but sing “Volare” by Domenico Modugno.

{ then I was suddenly swept up by the wind and started to fly in the infinite sky}.
