The villa would probably have been the permanent or semi-permanent residence of the owner; it would have been where the owner, in his role as patron, received his local clients; and it would have functioned as the administrative center of the latifundium.
La Villa (detta a quei tempi Palatia) pare sia stata la residenza permanente, o quasi, del suo possessore; dovrebbe essere il luogo dove il proprietario, in qualità di padrone, riceveva i clienti del luogo; essa avrebbe avuto funzione di centro amministrativo del latifondo.

Only the manorial portions of the complex have yet been excavated.

The ancillary structures: housing for slaves, workshops, stables, etc., have not been located.

The villa was a single-story building, centered on the peristyle, around which almost all the main public and private rooms were organized.

Entrance to the peristyle is via the atrium from the west. Thermal baths are located to the northwest; service rooms and probably guest rooms to the north; private apartments and a huge basilica* to the east; and rooms of unknown purpose to the south.
L’accesso al peristilio avviene attraverso l’atrio, da ovest. Il complesso delle terme è situato a nord-ovest; i locali di servizio, e forse anche le stanze degli ospiti, si trovano a nord; gli appartamenti privati, nonché  l’imponente Basilica* sono ad est ed ambienti di uso ignoto a sud.

The overall plan of the villa was dictated by several factors: older constructions on the site, the slight slope on which it was built, and the path of the sun and prevailing winds.
Il progetto generale della Villa fu dettato da diversi fattori: le precedenti costruzioni sul posto, la lieve pendenza sulla quale fu eretta, l’esposizione al sole ed ai venti dominanti.

The higher ground to the east is occupied by the Great Basilica, the private apartments, and the Corridor of the Great Hunt; the middle ground by the Peristyle, guest rooms, the entrance area, the Elliptical Peristyle, and the triclinium; while the lower ground to the west is dedicated to the thermal baths.
Il terreno più in alto ad est è occupato dalla Grande Basilica, dagli appartamenti privati, e dal Corridoio della Caccia Grossa; nel territorio di mezzo si trovano il Peristilio, le stanze degli ospiti, la zona d’ingresso, il Peristilio Ellittico ed il Triclinio, mentre la superficie più in basso ad ovest è riservata ai bagni termali.

The whole complex is somewhat unusual, as it is organized along three major axes; the primary axis is the (slightly bent) line that passes from the atrium, tablinum, peristyle and the great basilica (coinciding with the path visitors would follow).
L’intero complesso è, in certo qual modo, insolito ed organizzato lungo tre assi principali; l’asse primario è la linea (leggermente inclinata) che passa dall’atrio, tablinum (sala di rappresentanza), peristilio e grande basilica (il quale coincide con il percorso che i visitatori devono seguire).

The thermal baths and the elliptical peristyle with the triclinium are centered on separate axes.
Il quartiere delle terme ed il peristilio ellittico, con il Triclinio, sono situati su assi distinti.

In spite of the different orientations of the various parts of the villa, they all form a single structure, built simultaneously.
Nonostante il diverso orientamento dei vari settori della Villa, tutti assieme essi formano una singola struttura, costruita contemporaneamente.

There is no indication that the villa was constructed in several stages.
Non vi sono indicazioni che la Villa sia stata edificata in più riprese.

Little is known about the earlier villa, but it appears to have been just a large country residence. It was probably built around the beginning of the second century.
Si sa ben poco della Villa originale, però sembra che sia stata una grande residenza di campagna e nulla più. Fu probabilmente eretta agli inizi del II secolo d.C.

In 1959-60, Gino Vinicio Gentili excavated a mosaic on the floor of the room dubbed the “Chamber of the Ten Maidens” (Sala delle Dieci Ragazze in Italian).
Tra il 1959 ed il 1960 Gino Vinicio Gentili dissotterrò un mosaico sul pavimento della stanza nominata “Sala delle Dieci Ragazze”

Informally called “the bikini girls”, the maidens appear in a mosaic artwork which scholars named Coronation of the Winner.
Definite, colloquialmente, “le ragazze in bikini”, le fanciulle appaiono in un capolavoro musico che gli studiosi hanno denominato “Incoronazione del Vincitore”.

The young women perform sports including weight-lifting, discus throwing, running and ball-games.
Le adolescenti si cimentano in alcune competizioni ginniche, tra le quali: sollevamento pesi, lancio del disco, corsa campestre e giochi con palla.

A woman in a toga is depicted with a crown in her hand; one of the maidens holds a palm frond.
Una donna togata viene raffigurata con una corona in mano; una delle ragazze, invece, reca una fronda di palma.

Another well-preserved mosaic shows a hunt, with hunters using dogs and capturing a variety of game.
Un altro mosaico molto ben conservato raffigura una scena di caccia, dove i cacciatori utilizzano dei cani (cirnechi) per catturare una varietà di prede.

Vi si esercitavano le attività di giustizia e di pace giudiziaria.
