How many Italian staff interpreters are employed by the EU institutions and what is the outlook for the next 10 years?
Quanti sono attualmente gli interpreti di ruolo dell’Unità di lingua italiana presso i servizi d’interpretazione delle Istituzioni e quali sono le prospettive per i prossimi dieci anni?
There are currently 80 Italian language staff interpreters working for the EU institutions’ interpretation services.
Attualmente, presso i Servizi d’interpretazione delle Istituzioni lavorano 80 interpreti di ruolo di lingua italiana.
Of these 21 will be 65 or older by 2010 and will therefore definitely have retired.
Di questi, 21 saranno sicuramente andati in pensione entro il 2020 in seguito al raggiungimento dell’età massima per il pensionamento, ovvero 65 anni.
That is however the most favourable hypothesis, because it presupposes that all the other staff interpreters will stay on until they are 65.
Si tratta tuttavia dell’ipotesi più favorevole, perché parte dal presupposto che tutti gli altri interpreti di ruolo restino in servizio fino ai sessantacinque anni.
Moreover experience shows that staff quite often retire early, so there could in fact be a sharper fall in numbers.
L’esperienza mostra peraltro che i pensionamenti prima dei 65 anni sono relativamente frequenti, per cui la riduzione complessiva dell’organico potrebbe rivelarsi, di fatto, più consistente.
Indeed, by 2020 a further 17 staff interpreters will have reached the age of 60(a pensionable age);

Italian – the language of one of the founding member states – is not the only language facing the danger of a future shortage of qualified interpreters in the EU’s institutions.

The English booth, with a retirement rate of 50% over the next decade for both staff and freelances, will be hardest hit, followed by the languages of the other founding states: German, Dutch and French. Here the shortfalls will be respectively 45%,41% and 40%.

As a result of foreseeable retirements over the next few years we shall lose a wealth not just of professional experience but also of linguistic knowledge.
Con i pensionamenti previsti nei prossimi anni, si perderà un ampio bagaglio non solo di esperienza professionale, ma anche di conoscenze linguistiche.
Interpreters currently employed by the interpretation services of the three institutions know on average 4 or 5 languages each, whereas beginners usually have no more than 3.
Gli interpreti attualmente impiegati dai servizi d’interpretazione delle tre Istituzioni conoscono in media 4-5 lingue ciascuno, mentre gli interpreti che iniziano a lavorare non hanno generalmente più di 3 lingue.
So the problem is not just falling numbers but shrinking language coverage.
Oltre alla perdita in termini numerici, con il ricambio generazionale si produce inevitabilmente anche un impoverimento della copertura linguistica.
That is precisely why it is so important for the new generation of interpreters to have the most appropriate language profile.
Proprio per questo motivo, è particolarmente importante che la nuova generazione di interpreti abbia il profilo linguistico più adatto.
There is particular demand for the combination: French, German and English.
Uno dei profili linguistici più richiesti è costituito dalla combinazione francese, tedesco e inglese.
However, depending on the requirements of the various institutions, account is also taken of other language profiles, corresponding in particular to the languages of recent or future accessions or languages which will be in short supply in the next few years (e.g. Swedish, Finnish, Greek, Danish).
A seconda delle esigenze delle varie istituzioni, vengono tuttavia presi in considerazione anche altri profili linguistici comprendenti in particolare le lingue delle ultime o future adesioni e lingue destinate a diventare deficitarie nei prossimi anni (per es:, svedese, finlandese, greco, danese).
