My lady put me into collars and cuffs from the first.
La mia padrona mi fece indossare da subito colletti e polsini.

My lady had her two little nieces staying with her–we were at Sheldon at the time–and there was a fair on the common.
La mia padrona ospitava le nipoti– eravamo a Sheldon al tempo– e c’era una fiera nel parco.

“Now, Ellen,” she said, “I want you to take the two young ladies for a ride
on the donkeys.”
“Ora, Ellen,” disse, “voglio che tu porti le due signorine a fare un giro sugli asinelli.”

Off we went; solemn little loves they were; each had a hand.
E così andammo; due tesorini tutti seri; una per ogni mano.

But when we came to the donkeys they were too shy to go on.
Ma quando arrivammo agli asinelli, erano troppo timide per salirci.

So we stood and watched instead.
Così rimanemmo a guardare, invece.

Beautiful those donkeys were!
Che begli asinelli erano!

They were the first I’d seen out of a cart–for pleasure as you might say.
Erano I primi che avevo visto lontano dal carretto– per diletto si potrebbe dire.

They were a lovely silver-grey, with little red saddles and blue bridles and bells
jing-a-jingling on their ears.
Erano di un bel grigio argento, con delle piccole selle rosse, briglie blu e campanelle che tintinnavano agli orecchi.

And quite big girls–older than me, even–were riding them, ever so gay.
E ragazze grandi– più vecchie di me, anche– li cavalcavano, ed erano così felici.

Not at all common, I don’t mean, madam, just enjoying themselves.
Per niente volgari, non intendevo questo signora, si stavano solo divertendo.

And I don’t know what it was, but the way the little feet went, and the eyes–so gentle–and the soft ears–made me want to go on a donkey more than anything in the world!
E non so che cosa fosse, ma il modo in cui le zampette si muovevano e gli occhi– così dolci– e gli orecchi soffici– mi fecero desiderare di andare su un asinello più di ogni altra cosa al mondo!

…Of course, I couldn’t.
…Naturalmente, non potevo.

I had my young ladies.
Avevo con me le due signorine.

And what would I have looked like perched up there in my uniform?
E cosa sarei sembrata appollaiata là sopra nella mia uniforme?

But all the rest of the day it was donkeys–donkeys on the brain with me.
Ma per tutto il resto della giornata furono asinelli– asinelli con me nella mia testa.

I felt I should have burst if I didn’t tell some one; and who was there to tell?
Sentii che sarei scoppiata se non lo dicevo a qualcuno; e a chi potevo dirlo?
