From her nest in the holm-oak tree the Nightingale heard him, and she looked out through the leaves, and wondered.
Dal suo nido sul leccio l’Usignolo lo udì, guardò fuori attraverso le foglie e si mise a riflettere.

‘No red rose in all my garden!’ he cried, and his beautiful eyes filled with tears.
‘Nessuna rosa rossa in tutto il mio giardino!’ esclamò e i suoi begl’occhi si riempirono di lacrime.

>>>‘Ah, on what little things does happiness depend! I have read all that the wise men have written, and all the secrets of philosophy are mine, yet for want of a red rose is my life made wretched.’
‘Ah, da quali piccole cose dipende la felicità! Ho letto tutto ciò che hanno scritto i saggi e conosco bene tutti i secreti della filosofia, eppure per la mancanza di una rosa rossa la mia vita è infelice.’

‘Here at last is a true lover,’ said the Nightingale.
‘Finalmente un amante vero,’ disse l’Usignolo.

‘Night after night have I sung of him, though I knew him not: night after night have I told his story to the stars, and now I see him.
‘Notte dopo notte ho cantato di lui, sebbene non lo conoscessi: notte dopo notte ho narrato la sua storia alle stelle e adesso lo vedo.

His hair is dark as the hyacinth-blossom, and his lips are red as the rose of his desire; but passion has made his face like pale Ivory, and sorrow has set her seal upon his brow.’
I suoi capelli sono sono scuri come il fiore del giacinto e  le sue labbra sono rosse come la rosa del suo desiderio; ma la passione ha reso il suo volto pallido come l’avorio e il dolore ha messo il suo sigillo sulla sua fronte.’

‘The Prince gives a ball to-morrow night,’ murmured the young Student, ‘and my love will be of the company.
‘Il Principe dà un ballo domani sera,’ mormorò il giovane Studente, ‘e la mia innamorata sarà della compagnia.

If I bring her a red rose she will dance with me till dawn.
Se le porto una rossa rossa ballerà con me fino all’alba.

If I bring her a red rose, I shall hold her in my arms, and she will lean her head upon my shoulder, and her hand will be clasped in mine.
Se le porto una rossa rossa, la stringerò tra le braccia e lei appoggerà la testa sulla mia spalla e la sua mano sarà serrata nella mia. 

But there is no red rose in my garden, so I shall sit lonely, and she will pass me by.
Ma non c’è nessuna rosa rossa nel mio giardino, così resterò seduto da solo e lei mi ignorerà.

She will have no heed of me, and my heart will break.’
Lei non farà caso a me e il mio cuore si spezzerà.’

‘Here indeed is the true lover,’ said the Nightingale.
‘Questo è proprio il vero amante,’ disse l’Usignolo.

‘What I sing of he suffers: what is joy to me, to him is pain.
‘Ciò di cui io canto è quello per cui lui soffre: ciò che per me è gioia, per lui è sofferenza.

Surely Love is a wonderful thing.
Senza dubbio l’Amore è una cosa meravigliosa.

It is more precious than emeralds, and dearer than fine opals.
E’ più prezioso degli smeraldi e più costoso dell’opale fino.

Pearls and pomegranates cannot buy it, nor is it set forth in the market-place.
Perle e melagrane non lo possono comprare e neanche si trova in mostra al mercato.

It may not be purchased of the merchants, ‘or can it be weighed out in the balance for gold.’
Non può essere acquistato dai mercanti, ‘o pesato per essere compensato con l’oro.

‘The musicians will sit in their gallery,’ said the young Student, ‘and play upon their stringed instruments, and my love will dance to the sound of the harp and the violin.
‘I musicisti saranno seduti nel loggione,’ disse il giovane Studente, ‘suoneranno sui loro strumenti a corda e il mio amore danzerà al suono dell’arpa e del violino.

She will dance so lightly that her feet will not touch the floor, and the courtiers in their gay dresses will throng round her.
Danzerà così lievemente che i suoi piedi non toccheranno il suolo e i cortigiani nei loro abiti vivaci si affolleranno attorno a lei.

But with me she will not dance, for I have no red rose to give her;’ and he flung himself down on the grass, and buried his face in his hands, and wept.
Ma lei non danzerà con me, poiché non ho una rosa rossa da darle;’ si gettò sull’erba nascondendo la faccia tra le mani e pianse.

‘Why is he weeping?’ asked a little Green Lizard, as he ran past him with his tail in the air.
‘Perché sta piangendo?’ chiese una piccola Lucertola Verde mentre mentre gli passava accanto con la coda in aria.

‘Why, indeed?’ said a Butterfly, who was fluttering about after a sunbeam.
‘Perché, invero?’ disse la Farfalla, che svolazzava qua e là rincorrendo un raggio di sole.
