Napolitano, step down

Napolitano ci ha provato.
Napolitano has tried.

Lui voleva, vuole, lo status quo, la stabilità politica.
He has always wanted the “status quo”, political stability.

Ha creduto che un governo delle larghe intese potesse impedire il crollo del Paese.
He believed that a government of broad agreements could prevent the collapse of the country.

Invece ha ottenuto l’effetto contrario.
Instead it has had the opposite effect.

E’ stato un doppio azzardo voler rimanere per un altro settennato e accettare un governo condizionato da Berlusconi imputato in più processi che, fosse solo per la statistica, poteva diventare un pregiudicato in breve tempo.
He took a chance but with two risks. He wanted to stay on for another seven year period and accept a government propped up by Berlusconi who is a defendant in a number of criminal trials and just based on statistical reasoning, was at that time likely to be judged a criminal after a short time.

Letta’s hundred days have produced a vacuum-packed nothingness at a time when immediate and strong actions were needed to restart the economy, to protect disadvantaged families and to negotiate our position in Europe.

Prima dell’insediamento del Governo si discuteva della necessità di fare in fretta, il più in fretta possibile, sotto l’urgenza dei problemi.
Before the government was installed there was a discussion of the need to act in haste, as quickly as possible, because of the urgency of the problems.

Poi, il silenzio, il rinvio, gli annunci e il tentativo di cambiare la Costituzione senza alcun motivo.

Napolitano è un signore che fa politica dal dopoguerra, in Parlamento dal 1953, conosce deputati, senatori, ministri come un anziano maestro di scuola conoscerebbe ad uno ad uno i suoi ex allievi.
Napolitano is a gentleman who has been in politics since straight after the war. He’s been in Parliament since 1953, he knows the deputies, senators, and ministers like an elderly primary school teacher knows each of their former pupils.

E’ l’ultimo dei politici della Prima Repubblica ancora sulla scena, dopo la scomparsa di Andreotti, Cossiga e di tanti altri.
He’s the last of the politicians of the First Republic still in the picture, after the disappearance of Andreotti, Cossiga and so many others.

E che lo voglia o meno, il vero punto di riferimento di un Governo di nani.
Whether he likes it or not, he’s the true reference point for a government of dwarfs.

Un’alternanza al Quirinale avrebbe prodotto un cambiamento, un’uscita da una situazione cristallizzata, così non è stato.
Having a change of incumbent in the Quirinale Palace would have brought about a change, a way out of the entrenched situation. But that hasn’t happened.

Ma nessuno, e Napolitano lo sa meglio di altri, è insostituibile.
But as Napolitano knows better than others, no one is indispensable.

Lui è oggi, che lo voglia o meno, il garante di una situazione politica destinata al fallimento che ha consentito e avallato.
Whether or not he wants it, he is now the guarantor of a political situation that is destined to fail and he has allowed this to happen and has given it his approval.

Gli chiedo un passo indietro, il passaggio del testimone a un altro presidente che deciderà se sciogliere le Camere o proporre scenari di governo diversi da quello attuale che è insostenibile come Napolitano stesso probabilmente ammetterebbe in privato.
I’m asking him to step down, to hand over the baton to another president who will decide whether to dissolve parliament or suggest a different government scenario, something that is different from the current one that cannot stand up as Napolitano himself would probably admit in private.

Ci sono sempre alternative, signor Presidente, e oggi è necessario voltare pagina.
There are always alternatives, signor President, and today it is necessary to turn the page.
