Gli orfanotrofi non sono chiusi, sono ancora tanti, sono i nostri cittadini di oggi e di domani.
The orphanages have not closed down, there are still many children living there and they are our citizens of today and tomorrow.

Se volete potete cercare di contribuire portando proposte, idee, e qualche suggerimento, c’è bisogno di tanta gente e tante risorse.
If you would like to, you could try to contribute by putting forward proposals, ideas and even some suggestions because we need many people and many resources.

Ci sono 15 mila bambini in Italia che hanno bisogno della nostra vicinanza.
There are 15 thousand children here in Italy who need our closeness.

Sono bambini senza famiglia, vivono in strutture di accoglienza, vivono nelle cosiddette “case famiglia”.
These are children with no family who live in sheltered accommodation in the so-called “family homes”.

Ciao a tutti gli amici del Blog di Beppe Grillo, io sono Andrea Ciappone, il consigliere di una Onlus, la Terra dei Piccoli Onlus, una associazione per i minori in difficoltà.
Hello to all the friends of Beppe Grillo’s Blog. I am Andrea Ciappone, a counsellor for “Terra dei Piccoli Onlus” (Literally: “the Land of the Little Ones”)a non-profit association that deals with underage children in need.

>>> Cerchiamo di essere vicino ai ragazzi che hanno difficoltà, in questo periodo stiamo facendo una serie di iniziative per i bimbi che vivono all’interno delle “case famiglia”.
We always try to remain close to the kids in need and at the moment we are working on a range of initiatives involving those kids who live in the “family homes”.

Abbiamo raccolto 250 testimonianze di bambini, ragazzi, operatori, che vivono all’interno di queste strutture.
We gathered testimony from 250 children, youngsters and operators who live in these facilities.

Abbiamo girato diverse regioni italiane e realizzato una pubblicazione per cercare di far vivere le emozioni raccolte.
We visited a number of Italian regions and put together a publication in an attempt to bring the emotions we encountered to life.

È una pubblicazione che potete chiederci in forma gratuita, la facciamo per finalità divulgative per far conoscere questi tanti amici all’interno di strutture di accoglienza.
This is a publication that you can request from us, free of charge. It was put together for informational purposes and to enable everyone to get to know these little friends living in these shelters for orphans.

Sono circa 15 mila in Italia, vivono all’interno di strutture di accoglienza per minori.
There are 15 thousand children living in these sheltered accommodation facilities for underage children.

Sono ragazzi sfortunati, la famiglia di origine ha problemi, molti non hanno la possibilità di essere adottati e cercano di superare dei periodi di difficoltà, transitori.
These youngsters are truly unfortunate. Their own families are having problems and many of them have little or no chance of being adopted so they are simply trying to get through these hard times of transition.

Le strutture di accoglienza sono posti fantastici, ma anche posti con grandissime difficoltà.
These accommodation facilities are fantastic places, but they are also facing some huge difficulties.

Il primo problema è il pagamento delle rette, le strutture di accoglienza vivono di rette che vengono pagate con dei ritardi ragguardevoli, a volte si arriva addirittura a un anno e mezzo di ritardo.
The first problem is the payment of the boarding fees because these sheltered accommodation facilities survive on fees that are often paid very late, in many cases up to a year and a half late.

Considerate che questi ragazzi vivono, mangiano, si devono vestire, devono fare dei percorsi educativi, riabilitativi, tutti i giorni, quindi è impensabile che possano aspettare un anno e mezzo.
Given that these children live there, eat there, have to be provided with clothing, must receive an education and be rehabilitated every day, it is inconceivable for them to have to wait a year and a half for payments to arrive.

Abbiamo raccolto dei casi di ragazzi con difficoltà psicologiche rilevanti che spesso la struttura non ha la possibilità di assistere, perché non ha le risorse economiche per pagare dei professionisti adeguati.
We encountered cases involving youngsters with major psychological problems that these facilities are unable to help because they don’t have the necessary funds to pay for the services of suitable professionals.

Il bambino può quindi finire su percorsi terapeutici da cui non esce più, perché viene trattato come un malato di mente, mentre di fatto è un ragazzo, un bambino, che ha avuto un abuso, piuttosto una famiglia che si è completamente disgregata.
The child could therefore land up getting the kind of therapy from which he/she will never escape because he/she is treated like someone with a mental illness whereas he/she is merely a youngster or child that has suffered abuse or comes from a family that has totally disintegrated.

Uno dei costi maggiori che le strutture di accoglienza sostengono è la gestione degli immobili.
One of the major costs that these facilities have to shoulder has to do with their premises.

È un vero peccato che non si creino delle economie su questi beni, per esempio dando una priorità nella assegnazione dei beni confiscati alla criminalità organizzata.
It’s a real pity that no economy is being created in this regard, for example by giving these facilities a higher priority when allocating assets seized from the organised crime syndicates.

Peraltro queste case famiglia hanno difficoltà, a volte, a fare contratti in condomini, ordinari, perché sono abitate da tanti ragazzini, per cui sono in qualche modo chiassose, per cui rischiano di essere emarginate.
Inter alia, these organisations sometimes have problems getting leases on units in apartment blocks because numerous youngsters live in them and therefore they tend to be somewhat noisy, so now they risk being marginalised.

Questo allontana la casa famiglia dai centri abitati, perché il gestore della casa famiglia tende a spostarsi dove c’è maggiore disponibilità, dove c’è più spazio, tende a portare alle estreme periferie queste strutture di accoglienza, in posti isolati.
This means that these “family homes” tend to be some distance away from the city centres because the organisers tend to move to areas where there is greater availability, more space, thus landing them to the furthest outskirts of towns, often in isolated areas.

Il risultato di una attività di recupero dovrebbe essere l’inserimento nella vita lavorativa.
The outcome of a recovery operation should be to get these youngsters into jobs.

Purtroppo questi ragazzi hanno forti difficoltà nell’inserimento lavorativo.
Unfortunately these youngsters have a rough time adjusting to the world of work.

Abbiamo stimato in 250 mila Euro l’intervento complessivo che lo Stato deve sostenere per ogni singolo ragazzo all’interno delle strutture di accoglienza, è un peccato che questo investimento non trovi poi un riscontro dopo i 18 anni.
We have estimated that it costs the State around 250-thousand Euro in total for each youngster housed in these facilities but it’s a pity that there’s nothing else available to them after they turn 18.

Questi ragazzi dopo i 18 anni devono crescere da soli, devono diventare grandi, trovarsi una soluzione abitativa e devono trovarsi il lavoro, non c’é un percorso di tutoraggio, di accompagnamento.
Once they turn 18, these youngsters must grow up fast, all on their own, find a place to live and find a job, without any further tutoring or mentoring to aid them.

Alcuni hanno realizzato delle cose bellissime, un esempio è il Domus De Luna a Cagliari, ha aperto un ristorante che ha avuto una serie di riconoscimenti, è uno dei ristoranti che ha il maggiore rapporto prezzo qualità, si chiama “I Buoni e Cattivi”, e ci lavorano tutti ragazzi provenienti da case famiglia.
Some have done some amazing things. One example is the Domus De Luna in Cagliari, which opened a restaurant that has earned a number of accolades. This restaurant, called “I Buoni e Cattivi” (Literally the Tasty and the Bad”), offers top quality food at a reasonable price and all its employees are former residents of “family home” facilities.

E come ci sono riusciti? Semplicemente allungando il percorso di accoglienza, con un percorso di tutoraggio, facendoli crescere professionalmente.
So how did they manage to do this, you ask? Simply be extending the youngsters’ stay in the facility and putting them through a tutoring programme, thereby helping them to grow professionally.

Oggi quel locale è sempre pieno, si mangia benissimo, la gente si diverte e loro hanno un lavoro fantastico.
These days that restaurant is always full, the food is amazing, the patrons have an enjoyable time there and the guys have a fantastic job.

Servirebbe un intervento legislativo che sostenga questi ragazzi dopo i 18 anni, dandogli la possibilità di terminare le eventuali terapie, il corso di studi e soprattutto una soluzione abitativa.
What is needed is some sort of legislative intervention to support these youngsters after they turn 18, enabling them to complete any treatments, provide them with additional training and, above all, helping them to find suitable accommodation.

Tutti credono che gli orfanotrofi siano chiusi e quindi non esistano più casi di abbandono minorile.
Everyone seems to think that the orphanages have closed down and that therefore there are no more cases of abandoned children

Ce ne sono invece 15 mila in Italia, è un numero molto elevato, sono nostri ragazzi, sono futuri cittadini, sono persone che devono superare delle difficoltà che hanno subito, non hanno fatto nulla, sono vittime.
The truth is however that there are in fact some 15-thousand such children here in Italy, which is a very high number indeed. These are our youngsters, future citizens, people who have to somehow overcome the difficulties that they have endured. They have done nothing wrong but are merely victims.

Le risorse, quando ci sono, sono poche.
The resources, when available, are very scarce.

Ci sono casi in cui le strutture di accoglienza non accettano minori perché senza risorse economiche.
There are cases of sheltered accommodation facilities that no longer accept new youngsters due to lack of funds.

Noi cerchiamo di sostenere questi ragazzi con iniziative dirette e cercando di coinvolgere l’opinione pubblica.
We are trying to support these youngsters by means of direct and indirect initiatives and by raising public awareness.

Una delle ultime iniziative è uno spazio dedicato al mercatino dei piccoli. Un’area dove si acquista senza pagare nulla, beni che possono servire per l’infanzia dei piccoli, per permettere a questi bambini di andare nel negozio e fare shopping come avrebbero voluto fare senza pagare nulla.
One of our latest initiatives is a venue dedicated to the children’s market, which is a place where goods that could be useful for raising children are made available free of charge so as to enable these children to go into the shop and do some shopping, as they would normally do, but without having to pay anything.

Stiamo cercando di realizzare la prima struttura all’interno del comune di Roma, l’idea è piaciuta, stiamo aspettando una risposta.
We are trying to set up the first structure of this type within the Rome municipal district and the idea appears to have gone down very well, so we’re now awaiting a response.

Per conoscere una delle storie di questi 15 mila ragazzi Salvatore ci ha particolarmente colpito.
While trying to find out more about the story of these 15-thousand youngsters, Salvatore struck us particularly.

Ogni anno duemila ragazzi diventano adulti e escono dalle strutture di accoglienza.
Each year, two thousand youngsters become adults in the eyes of the law and leave these facilities.

Salvatore è uno di questi.
Salvatore is one of them.

La sua storia ce la racconta con le sue parole.
He told us his story in his own words, as follows.

Salvatore: “Mi chiamo Salvatore e vi racconto in breve la mia storia.
Salvatore: “My name is Salvatore and I will briefly tell you my story.

Non è bella, ma sono contento di poterla raccontare ora che ho 19 anni.
It is not very nice but I’m happy to be able to tell it to you now that I’m 19 years old.

Sono maggiorenne e ho una vita davanti a me, quando ero un bambino ne combinavo tante, ero irrequieto e neanche la scuola mi accettava.
I have now come of age and my life lies ahead of me. When I was young I was always in trouble, I was restless and not even the school wanted me around.

Io avevo un dolore dentro che nessuno sentiva o voleva capire.
I felt a pain inside me that no one could feel or even tried to understand.

Arrivò un giorno in cui finalmente qualcuno volle comprendere la mia irrequietezza e fui portato per in una casa famiglia.
Finally the day came when someone actually tried to understand the source of my restlessness and so I was taken to a “family home” facility.

Ma io ero arrabbiato, incavolato, io affetto lo volevo da mamma e da papà e non da chi fa un mestiere per provare a amare.
However, I was angry, fuming in fact. I wanted love from my own mother and father, not from someone whose job it is to try to show love.

Per i miei non esistevo, mio padre è tossicodipendente e per mia madre non esistevo.
As far as my parents were concerned, I didn’t even exist. My father is a drug addict and I didn’t matter to my own mother.

L’unico mio contatto era con i miei amici e una educatrice della casa famiglia, ma nonostante tutto la mia rabbia era così forte che presto mi cacciarono dalla prima casa famiglia, dalla seconda, la sesta, la settima, sono sempre stato messo alla porta, cacciato via anche in piena notte.
My only contact was with my friends and one of the teachers at the “family home” facility but notwithstanding this, my anger was so intense that they threw me out of the first family home facility that I stayed at, as well as from the second, the sixth, the seventh, and so on.They always showed me the door, and threw me out, even in the dead of night.

Tutte le case famiglia mi hanno dato via perché non ero un bambino da poter tenere, uno standard, carino e sempre pronto a dire di sì.
All the family homes gave me away because I was not the kind of child that they wanted to keep, an example, someone friendly who was always ready to agree to everything.

Ho passato tante notti a pensare a una vita da barbone e in solitudine, ma fui portato dai servizi sociali in un’altra struttura, fuori Roma.
I spent many a night thinking about spending the rest of my life as a tramp, all alone, but then the social services took me to yet another facility on the outskirts of Rome.

Non volevo, strillavo, avevo paura, ero scortato dai vigili e non potevo andarmene, mi stavano portando lontano, in piena campagna, avevo anche perso l’orientamento.
I was not interested, I screamed and shouted, I was scared, I was escorted by the policemen and I couldn’t get away.They were taking me far away, out into the countryside and I didn’t even know where I was.

Ero perso.
I was lost.

Quel giorno me lo ricordo bene, appena arrivati in sala di attesa vidi un video che parlava dell’ippoterapia, poi colloquio con il responsabile, le parole erano forti, arrivavano al cuore.
I remember that day very well. As soon as we entered the waiting room I saw a video in which they were talking about horse riding therapy, after which I spoke with the manager. His words were powerful and they were heartfelt.

Noi non ti cacciamo, ti teniamo, nonostante tu possa rompere o scappare, il nostro motto è amare e abbracciare chi ha bisogno.
We will never throw you out of here, we’re going to look after you, even if you break stuff or run away, because our motto is to love and embrace those in need.

E non sono più andato via.
And the truth is that I never left that place.

Mi hanno aiutato a crescere, a sistemare ciò che avevo perso e ciò che mi confondeva.
They helped me to grow and to come to terms with what I had lost and what was confusing me.

Ora riesco a affrontare gli altri parlando e non più solo strillando e adesso vorrei trovare un lavoro stabile, una casa e anche avere una famiglia, con tanti figli, per dare a loro ciò che io non ho mai avuto.”
Now I’m able to talk to other people without screaming and shouting and now I want to find a steady job, a place to live and start my very own family, with lots of kids so that I can give them everything that I never had.”
