Ieri mi sono recato a L’Aquila, l’ho fatto cercando di essere il più discreto possibile.
Yesterday I went to L’Aquila. I did that whilst trying to keep as low a profile as possible.
Concordo con il presidente della provincia Stefania Pezzopane quando accusa i politici ed i vari ministri, più di 10, di voler fare sciacallaggio elettorale correndo in cerca di telecamere senza curarsi di altro.
I agree with Stefania Pezzopane, the president of the province when he is accusing the politicians and the various Ministers, more than 10 of them, of wanting to do election profiteering by running in search of the TV cameras without bothering about other stuff.
La devastazione che ho toccato con mano, in quella città a pochi chilometri dalla mia terra natale, è stata a dir poco agghiacciante.
The devastation that I touched with my own hands, in that city, that is a few kilometers from the land where I was born, was, to say the least, bloodcurdling.
La situazione ora sembra normalizzata, gli aiuti a regime, gli stanziamenti finanziari troveranno l’unanimità di governo e opposizione, ma la terra continua a tremare.
Now the situation seems to have settled, the “regime aid”, the provision of finance will find the humanity of the government and the opposition, but the land continues to shake.
Alla solidarietà per il dolore di questa gente, di giorno in giorno si fa largo il sentimento di rabbia e la sensazione che questa tragedia abbia imboccato, con il fronte compatto dei media e la paura dei politici, il tunnel del “non è il caso di fare polemica”.
As well as the solidarity for the suffering of these people, day by day the feeling of anger is spreading and the feeling that this tragedy, with the compact attitude of the media and the fear of the politicians, has started the tunnel of “it’s not right to be polemical”.

In Cina, nel maggio 2008 ci fu un terremoto violentissimo in pieno giorno, vennero giù gli edifici pubblici, tra cui molte scuole e si contarono migliaia di vittime tra cui moltissimi bambini, motivo per cui fu chiamata “la strage dei bambini”.
In China, in May 2008, there was a really violent earthquake during the day and public buildings, including many schools, collapsed and they counted millions of victims including so many children, which is why it was called the “slaughter of the children”.
Fu accertato che gli edifici pubblici non erano stati costruiti secondo adeguate norme sismiche.

La mobilitazione degli aiuti del governo arrivarono immediati ma non bastò ed i responsabili furono costretti ad inginocchiarsi per evitare il linciaggio della folla.
The mobilization of government aid happened immediately but it was not enough and the people responsible were obliged to go down on their knees to escape being set upon by the crowd.

I want to know why Giampiero Giuliani was treated like a mad alarmist in a “Studio Aperto” TV News on April 2, just 4 days before the earthquake, and then denounced for having caused alarm.
Voglio sapere perché il governo non ha preso in seria considerazione le parole di un esperto, e con chi abbia condiviso di correre questo rischio.
I want to know why the government did not take into serious consideration the words of an expert, and with whom they decided to share the risk of doing so.
Sperando che la risposta non sia quella che ho già ascoltato e cioè che non si sarebbe potuto evacuare l’Abruzzo, ma almeno gli edifici pubblici a più alto rischio compresa la casa dello studente dove da giorni si udivano sinistri scricchiolii.
Hoping that the reply is not one that I have already heard, namely that it would not have been possible to evacuate Abruzzo, but at least the public buildings with the highest risk including the student residence where, for days, they had been hearing sinister creaking.

Voglio sapere perché il governo sponsorizza l’Impregilo, società coinvolta nello scandalo dei rifiuti di Napoli, nell’eterno cantiere dai finanziamenti senza fondo della Salerno Reggio Calabria, nella costruzione di parte dell’ospedale San Salvatore sgretolatosi a L’Aquila ma costato nove volte in più del preventivato.
I want to know why the government is sponsoring Impregilo, the company that is involved in the scandal of Naples’ refuse, in the eternal building site of bottomless funds of Salerno Reggio Calabria, in the construction of part of the San Salvatore hospital that has crumbled in L’Aquila even though it cost 9 times more than estimated.
Voglio sapere perché dopo questa conclamata inadeguatezza di uno dei più grossi gruppi edili del Paese Silvio Berlusconi si ostini ad appaltargli l’opera inutile del Ponte di Messina.
I want to know why after this evident inadequacy of one of the biggest construction groups, in the country, Silvio Berlusconi obstinately gives it the contract for the useless project of the bridge over the Straits of Messina.
Voglio sapere come mai non sono ancora state approvate le norme tecniche per le costruzioni di un Decreto ministeriale del 14 settembre 2005 che reca la mia firma da ministro delle Infrastrutture, concepito con il pensiero rivolto al sisma del 2002 in Molise che uccise 27 bambini.

Lo Stato ha il dovere di sostenere nella tragedia gli abruzzesi, deve affiancare la celerità nell’individuare e non distogliere le eventuali responsabilità in gioco.
As its duty to support the people of Abruzzo in their tragedy, the State must be at the side of those who, with speed, want to identify and not hide, where the responsibilities lie.
