The 2015 Calendar of Lay Saints

“La scorta”, così ribattezzano comunemente – condannandoli all’anonimato – i poliziotti e i carabinieri che vengono trucidati durante un rapimento, come avvenne per Aldo Moro, o un omicidio, come per Falcone e Borsellino.
“The security detail”, is a common way of referring to them – thus providing them with anonymity. They are the police officers and the carabinieri that are mowed down during a kidnapping, as happened for Aldo Moro, or a homicide, as happened with Falcone and Borsellino.

Gli agenti di Polizia e i Carabinieri hanno pagato il più alto tributo di sangue al terrorismo e alla criminalità organizzata, nel nostro Paese.
In our country, it’s the officers of the police force and the carabinieri that have paid the highest price in blood at the hands of terrorists and organised crime.

Ne sono morti a centinaia, dal dopoguerra a oggi.
Hundreds have been killed since the second world war.

Uomini e donne citati e ricordati solo come “La scorta”.
Men and women mentioned in the records simply as “the security detail“.

The 2015 Calendar of Lay Saints tries to go some way in making up for this lack of memorial by publishing the names of the victims who were members of the security forces.

Sono gli angeli custodi di magistrati o politici, che spesso addirittura chiedono di entrare a far parte delle squadre di protezione, sapendo i rischi a cui vanno incontro.
They are the guardian angels of magistrates and politicians. They often even request to be allowed to be part of a protection team while understanding the risks they will be running.

Come Emanuela Loi, che si sarebbe sposata pochi giorni dopo via D’Amelio, la strage in cui perse la vita.
People like Emanuela Loi, who was to get married a few days after the slaughter in via D’Amelio, the slaughter that ended her life.

Emanuela fu la prima agente donna della Polizia di Stato a rimanere uccisa in servizio.
Emanuela was the first female officer in the State Police service to lose life in active service.

Troppo spesso le “scorte” vengono sterminate insieme a chi devono proteggere, per colpa dell’ignavia e della collusione dello Stato.
Too often, the members of the “security detail” are wiped out together with the people they are protecting, because of the laziness or the collusion of the State.

Per ogni “scorta” esistono istituzioni occulte e servizi deviati che hanno obiettivi opposti e si nascondono come scarafaggi negli anfratti delle istituzioni, senza pagare mai dazio.
For every “security detail“, there are hidden institutions and corrupt units working against them – entities that hide like cockroaches in the crevices of the institutions, without paying any dues.

Secondo gli agenti di scorta, via d’Amelio era una strada pericolosa.
According to the bodyguards, via d’Amelio was a dangerous street.

E lo era a tal punto che fu chiesto di procedere preventivamente a una rimozione dei veicoli parcheggiati davanti casa della madre di Paolo Borsellino.
And it was so dangerous that they asked for the removal of cars parked outside the home of Paolo Borsellino’s mother.

La richiesta non venne accolta dal Comune di Palermo, come ricordato da Antonino Caponnetto, giudice antimafia, in un’intervista rilasciata alla Rai.
The request was not accepted by the city of Palermo authorities, as was pointed out by the antimafia judge, Antonino Caponnetto, in an interview given to the Rai.

E Borsellino fu ammazzato.
And Borsellino was killed.

Anche nel caso Moro esistono terrificanti scheletri nell’armadio dello Stato italiano.
Similarly in the Moro case, there are terrifying skeletons in the cupboard of the Italian State.

Per la tutela del segretario della Dc erano stati richiesti da mesi un’auto blindata e un potenziamento della scorta.
To protect the DC Party Secretary, numerous requests had been made for him to have an armoured vehicle and a strengthening of the of the security detail.

Ma nessuno rispose.
No response.

E Moro fu ammazzato.
And Moro was killed.
