The State of the Union 2017: Catching the wind in our sails

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker today delivered his 2017 State of the Union Address, before the Members of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, presenting his priorities for the year ahead and outlining his vision for how the European Union could evolve by 2025 (see full speech).

President Juncker’s speech in the European Parliament was accompanied by the adoption of concrete initiatives by the European Commission on trade, investment screening, cybersecurity, industry, data and democracy, putting words immediately into action.

Contesto

Every year in September, the President of the European Commission delivers his State of the Union Address before the European Parliament, taking stock of achievements of the past year and presenting priorities for the year ahead.
Ogni anno a settembre il Presidente della Commissione europea pronuncia dinanzi al Parlamento europeo il discorso sullo stato dell’Unione, in cui fa il punto della situazione per l’anno appena trascorso e presenta le priorità per l’anno successivo.

The President also sets out how the Commission will address the most pressing challenges the European Union is facing.
Il Presidente illustra anche in che modo la Commissione intende rispondere alle sfide più pressanti con cui è confrontata l’Unione europea.

The speech is followed by a plenary debate.
Al discorso fa seguito un dibattito in sessione plenaria.

This kick-starts the dialogue with the European Parliament and Council to prepare the Commission Work Programme for the following year.
È così che prende il via il dialogo con il Parlamento europeo e il Consiglio in preparazione del programma di lavoro della Commissione per l’anno successivo.

In addition, President Juncker and First Vice-President Timmermans sent today a Letter of Intent to the President of the European Parliament and the Presidency of the Council that sets out in detail the actions the Commission intends to take by means of legislation and other initiatives until the end of the following year (2018 in this case).
