To be or to appear?

L’italiano non vuole sapere troppo su di sé.
The Italian person doesn’t want to know too much about himself.

Nel caso sia costretto a guardarsi allo specchio, nega la propria immagine e attribuisce agli altri i suoi vizi, le sue debolezze.
If he is forced to look at himself in the mirror, he denies his own image and blames the others for his defects, his weaknesses.

Si inventa un mondo di cui è prigioniero, ma di cui possiede le chiavi.
He invents for himself a world in which he is a prisoner, but for which he has the keys.

Un canarino in gabbia, abituato a non volare, con il terrore di uscire dalla sua piccola prigione.
A budgerigar in a cage, used to not flying, with the terror of going out of his tiny prison.

He hates being faced with his responsibilities.

Ama chi le prende al suo posto.
He loves anyone who accepts those responsibilities in his place.

E’ un puro, non si occupa di politica, la subisce.
He’s “pure”. He doesn’t do politics, he suffers it.

E’ onesto, non denuncia chi viola la legge perché non è suo compito.
He’s honest. He doesn’t denounce those who violate the law because it’s not his job.

E’ rassegnato all’immutabilità del mondo, che non ama.
He is resigned to the immutability of the world that he doesn’t love.

Vive giorno dopo giorno, o forse è meglio dire alla giornata.
He lives day by day, or rather by the day.

Gli eroi gli danno l’orticaria, sono un modello che lo mette in imbarazzo.
The heroes give him urticaria. They are a model that embarrasses him.

Preferisce chi è peggio di lui (lo fa sentire meglio) e lo nomina suo riferimento, presidente del Consiglio, segretario di partito, giornalista.
He prefers those who are worse than him (it makes him feel better) and he appoints them to key positions, President of the Council, secretary of the party, journalist.

Il suo ritratto è il più grande nemico.
His image is the biggest enemy.

Passa la vita ad evitare il confronto, che, lui sa, potrebbe essere mortale.
He spends his life avoiding the comparison that he knows could be fatal.

“Prese la lampada sulla tavola e salì cautamente le scale.
” He took the lamp from the table and crept upstairs.

Mentre apriva la porta, un sorriso di gioia gli sfiorò il viso stranamente giovane e indugiò un attimo sulle labbra…
As he unbarred the door, a smile of joy flitted across his strangely young-looking face and lingered for a moment about his lips…

Gli parve che il peso gli fosse già stato tolto di dosso.
He felt as if the load had been lifted from him already.

Entrò tranquillamente, chiuse la porta alle sue spalle, come era solito fare, e tolse il panno cremisi dal ritratto.
He went in quietly, locking the door behind him, as was his custom, and dragged the purple hanging from the portrait.

Un grido di dolore e di indignazione gli sfuggì dalle labbra.
A cry of pain and indignation broke from him.

Lo tiene in vita, gli evita confronti dolorosi.
He keeps it alive, it saves him from painful comparisons.

La sua esistenza è un gioco a nascondino, di “vorrei ma non posso”, di “è una cosa più grande di me”, di “qualcuno ci penserà”.
His existence is a game of “hide and seek”, of “I would like to, but I can’t”, of “it’s something bigger than me”, of “someone will think of it”.

E’ un egoista inconsapevole, non sa di esserlo e forse non vuole esserlo.
He’s an unwitting egotist. He doesn’t know he is that or perhaps he doesn’t want to be.

Vive nella paura della luce del giorno, della consapevolezza di quello che potrebbe essere, ma non è.
He lives in fear of the light of day, of the knowledge of what could be, but isn’t.
