La stampa si autoimbavaglia
The press is gagging itself

E’ certamente vero che Berlusconi, con la legge sulle intercettazioni, vuole imbavagliare l’informazione, ma è anche vero che la stampa e le televisioni – anche quelle apparentemente più indipendenti – ci mettono del loro per imbavagliarsi da sole.
While it is certainly true that Berlusconi wants to gag the media with his wiretapping law, it is equally true that the press and the television broadcasters, even those that appear to be more independent, are doing their best to gag themselves.

Prendiamo il caso di quel che è successo ieri.
Take the case of what happened yesterday for example.

Noi dell’Italia dei Valori abbiamo depositato alla Corte di Cassazione oltre due milioni di firme di cittadini italiani per abrogare con referendum tre leggi vergogna:
We of the Italia dei Valori party deposited more than two million signatures from Italian citizens with the Court of Cassation, calling for a referendum to repeal three particularly shameful laws, namely

il legittimo impedimento (ovvero quella legge che ha permesso e permette a Berlusconi di non farsi processare)
the Legitimate impediment law (the law that has, and continues to allow Berlusconi to avoid prosecution)

la privatizzazione dell’acqua (ovvero quella legge che assicura l’utilizzo dell’acqua solo a chi può permettersi di pagarla, mentre dovrebbe essere un diritto di tutti)
the privatisation of water resources law (the law that guarantees access to water only to those who can afford to pay for it, even though it should be everyone’s right)

e le centrali nucleari (ovvero quella legge con cui il Governo Berlusconi ha stabilito di installare ben 13 centrali nucleari nel nostro Paese, con grave rischio per la salute, l’ambiente e il nostro futuro).
and the Nuclear power station law (the law by which Berlusconi Government committed this Country to the construction of no less than 13 nuclear powers stations, Irrespective of the serious risk that they pose to public health, the environment and our future).

>>> Non è una cosa di poco conto: una moltitudine enorme di cittadini italiani hanno sottoscritto le nostre proposte di referendum.
This is no trifling matter. A huge multitude of Italian citizens have expressed their support for our referendum proposals.

Ora, la procedura è avviata e i cittadini, finalmente, potranno dire la loro su temi importantissimi che attengono rispettivamente a tre principi fondamentali tutelati dalla nostra Costituzione: la legalità, l’uguaglianza davanti alla legge e la salute.
Now the process is underway and this Country’s citizens will finally be able to have their say regarding a number of very important topics that directly to three of the basic principles protected by our constitution, namely, legality, equality and health.

Eppure, nessun organo di stampa ha dato notizia dell’evento, nessun telegiornale ne ha parlato, nessun giornale lo ha riferito.
Yet not a single one of the newspapers have seen fit to report on this event, just as no television news broadcast made any reference to it.

Praticamente tutti gli organi di informazione ufficiali hanno ignorato e hanno fatto finta di non vedere e di non sapere.
In reality, all of the official information sources have ignored the event totally and are pretending not to see and not to know anything.

Allora dobbiamo chiederci perché è avvenuto e avviene tutto questo.
We have to ask ourselves why all this has and is happening.

Per capirci qualcosa ho chiesto spiegazioni a un serio giornalista parlamentare che ho incontrato questa mattina a Montecitorio.
In an attempt to get to the bottom of it, I asked for an explanation from a reliable journalist that I met at Montecitorio this morning.

Mi ha risposto che ciò era dovuto al fatto che l’Italia dei Valori non ha collegamenti lobbistici adeguati con le varie redazioni giornalistiche e televisive e, per questa ragione, la nostra azione politica e parlamentare viene costantemente ignorata se non addirittura boicottata (anche su istigazione di altri gruppi parlamentari).
His response was that it was all due to the fact that the Italia dei Valori doesn’t have sufficient lobbying links with the various press and television editors and that is why our political and Parliamentary activities are constantly being ignored if not outright boycotted (also instigated by other parliamentary groups).

Insomma, mi ha consigliato di “piazzare” qualche giornalista “amico” nelle redazioni dei giornali.
In other words, he advised me to also “place” a few journalist “friends” in the press offices.

No, non voglio farlo.
My answer is “No”, I don’t want to do that.

Per rispetto proprio dei giornalisti e della loro professione, credo sia meglio che l’informazione rimanga veramente indipendente.
In the interests of the journalists themselves, and of their profession, I believe that it would be better for the media to remain truly independent.

Non bisogna irretire i giornalisti con blandizie e promesse. Soprattutto credo sia un peccato cercare di comprare i loro favori.
Journalists should not have to be enticed with flattery and promises and, above all, I believe it’s a sin to try to buy their favours.

Però, mi sono cadute le braccia nel constatare l’assoluto silenzio con cui la stampa ha reagito al deposito delle firme referendarie.
However, I must say that my shoulders slumped when I saw the absolute silence with which the press greeted the depositing of the signatures calling for a referendum.

D’accordo avercela con me o con l’IdV per le nostre battaglie di legalità, ma ignorare oltre due milioni di firme mi sembra davvero un atto di disinformazione degno del peggior regime.
It’s one thing to take it out on me or on the IDV because of our battles for legality, but to simply ignore more than two million signatures really seems to be an act of disinformation worthy of the worst regime on earth.

Chiedo, allora, ai Direttori dei giornali – almeno a quelli che ancora vogliono rimanere indipendenti – di riconsiderare la loro posizione e di informare adeguatamente l’opinione pubblica sull’esistenza e sul contenuto dei tre referendum.
So I’m asking the newspaper editors, or at the very least those that still have any remaining desire to be independent, to reconsider their position and to adequately inform the public regarding the existence and the content of the three referendums.

Chiedo soprattutto a voi della Rete e al mondo dei blogger di far partire una campagna informativa alternativa e penetrante per far comprendere ai cittadini di non lasciarsi sfuggire questa occasione e di attrezzarsi per andare in massa a votare al prossimo referendum.
Above all, I ask all of you that are on the Web and all the bloggers amongst us to launch a far-reaching alternative information campaign to make the public aware that this is an opportunity that cannot be missed and that they should go out in their millions to vote in the next referendum.
