Se nell’Arkansas piovono merli, in Emilia Romagna piovono tortore.
Whereas in Arkansas it’s raining blackbirds, in Emilia Romagna it’s raining turtle doves.

Torniamo indietro di una settimana.
Let’s go back a week in time.

Durante i festeggiamenti di fine anno, migliaia di merli dalle ali rosse muoiono nella cittadina di Beebe.
During the New Year festivities, thousands of red-winged blackbirds die in the small town of Beebe.

Cadono dal cielo nei giardini, nelle strade e nei tetti come colpiti da un fulmine.
They fell from the sky into the gardens, the roads, and onto the roofs as though they had been struck by lightning.

Non si conoscono ancora le cause della strage.
The causes of the mass deaths are still not known.

Le ipotesi finora sono di grandine ad alta quota, di avvelenamento dell’aria e persino per lo spavento per i fuochi di Capodanno (sic).
The hypotheses up until now are high altitude hail, poisoning in the air and even the shock resulting from New Year fireworks.

The only verified fact is that the blackbirds lost their lives as a result of blood clots caused by internal injuries.

The strange fact is that no other type of bird has been hit and that the inhabitants of the place have not suffered any malaise.

Lo strano episodio non si è però concluso a Beebe.

Tre giorni dopo centinaia di merli sono trovati a Baton Rouge e Organza in Louisiana.
Three days later, hundreds of blackbirds were found at Baton Rouge and Organza in Louisiana.

Quattro giorni dopo un centinaio di corvi muoiono a Falkoeping in Svezia, con le stesse lesioni riscontrate nei merli.
Four days later a hundred jackdaws died in Falkoeping in Sweden, with the same injuries found in the blackbirds.

Cinque giorni dopo centinaia di merli muoiono a Murray nel Kentucky.
Five days later hundreds of blackbirds died in Murray in Kentucky.

Il 6 gennaio è il turno delle tortore, ottomila agonizzano sulla statale di Faenza e nei dintorni.
On 6 January it’s the turtle doves, eight thousand in their death throes on the state road of Faenza and its surroundings.

Nei film di fantascienza il pericolo di una catastrofe è annunciato da giganteschi stormi di uccelli che si levano in volo e fuggono lontano.
In science fiction films the danger of a catastrophe is announced by gigantic flocks of birds that rise up into the sky and fly far away.

Se invece di volare ci precipitano direttamente in testa cosa vorrà dire?

Le Guardie Venatorie del WWF da domenica raccolgono quotidianamente dozzine di cadaveri di volatili, nemmeno fossero i merli dell’Arkansas, espulsi dal canale di scolo della fabbrica.
Since Sunday, the WWF wildlife rangers have been collecting dozens of dead birds every day, and it’s not even as though they were the Arkansas blackbirds, sent out from the channel carrying the waste water.

I vicini da qualche giorno si lamentano di un odore particolarmente acre, come di carne bruciata.
For the last few days, people of the neighbourhood have been complaining of a particularly sharp smell, like burnt meat.
