L’Australia è vicina
Australia is close by

Una parte dell’Australia delle dimensioni della Germania è sott’acqua.
A part of Australia measuring the size of Germany is under water.

Nello Stato del Queensland sono caduti 200 millimetri di pioggia per giorni.
In the State of Queensland, 200 millimetres of rain has been falling for days.

La città di Brisbane, la terza del Paese con due milioni di abitanti, assomiglia a Venezia.
The city of Brisbane, the country’s third city with two million inhabitants, is like Venice.

Al posto delle gondole ci sono le barche della Protezione Civile e nell’acqua nuotano numerosi i serpenti, scacciati dalle tane invase dalle acque.
Instead of the gondolas there are boats of the Civil Protection and there are numerous snakes swimming around in the water, flushed out of their lairs that have been invaded by the flood water.

In centro è stato avvistato anche un pescecane giunto dall’Oceano.
In the centre there’s even been the sighting of a shark that’s arrived from the ocean.

19 persone morte, 61 scomparse, 120.000 case senza acqua e elettricità, i trasporti cancellati insieme ai raccolti e agli allevamenti di bestiame, le miniere allagate.
19 people have died and 61 have disappeared. 120,000 homes are without water and electricity.Transport has stopped as has the harvest and the animal husbandry. The mines have been flooded.

Il Queensland è un’immensa laguna marrone, dall’alto sembra una zona di guerra.
Queensland is an immense brown lagoon. From above it seems like a war zone.

L’Australia è lontana, più lontana della Luna.
Australia is a long way away, further than the moon.

E invece è vicina, a due passi, come il cortile di casa nostra.
And yet it is close by, just two steps away, like our own backyard.

Per curiosità ho letto due pagine di Wikipedia sulle inondazioni nel mondo.
Just out of curiosity, I read a couple of pages on Wikipedia about floods in the world.

La prima del 2008, la seconda del 2010 (nella quale non erano ancora incluse le devastazioni dell’Australia e del Brasile di questi giorni).
The first relating to 2008, the second relating to 2010 (which didn’t include the devastation taking place in the last few days in Australia and Brazil).

Nel 2008 le inondazioni riportate erano 15, nel 2010, 38.
In 2008 there were 15 floods, in 2010, there were 38.

Il 2010 è stato l’anno più caldo registrato negli ultimi 150 anni.
The year 2010 was the warmest year ever recorded in the last 150 years.
