White! he turned as white as a woman.
Pallido! Divenne bianco come una donna.
I had to slam the door, and there I stood, all of a tremble, till I knew he had gone.
Dovetti sbattere la porta e rimasi lì, tutta tremante, finché non fui sicura che se ne fosse andato.
When I opened the door–believe me or not, madam–that man was gone!
Quando aprii la porta– che mi creda o no, signora– quell’uomo se n’era andato!
I ran out into the road just as I was, in my apron and my house-shoes, and there I stayed in the middle of the road…staring.
Corsi fuori per strada così come ero, col grembiule e le pantofole, e lì sono rimasta in mezzo alla strada…con gli occhi sbarrati.

La gente avrebbe riso di me se mi avesse visto…
…Goodness gracious!–What’s that?
…Buon Dio!– Che cos’è?
It’s the clock striking! And here I’ve been keeping you awake.
E’ l’orologio che suona! E io qui a tenervi sveglia.
Oh, madam, you ought to have stopped me…
Oh, signora, avrebbe dovuto fermarmi…
Can I tuck in your feet?
Le posso rimboccare la coperta intorno ai piedi?
I always tuck in my lady’s feet, every night, just the same.
Rimbocco sempre la coperta intorno ai piedi della mia padrona, ogni notte, sempre nello stesso modo.
And she says, “Good night, Ellen. Sleep sound and wake early!”
E lei dice, “Buonanotte, Ellen. Dormi profondamente e svegliati presto!”
I don’t know what I should do if she didn’t say that, now.
Non so cosa farei adesso, se non lo dicesse.
…Oh dear, I sometimes think…whatever should I do if anything were
to…But, there, thinking’s no good to any one–is it, madam?
…Oddio, a volte penso…che mai potrei fare se qualcosa dovesse…Ma, suvvia, pensare non fa bene a nessuno– vero, signora?
Thinking won’t help.
Pensare non aiuta.
Not that I do it often.
Non che io lo faccia spesso.
And if ever I do I pull myself up sharp, “Now, then, Ellen.
E se anche lo faccio, mi tiro su di colpo, “Suvvia, Ellen.
At it again–you silly girl! If you can’t find anything better to do than to start thinking!…”
Ancora con questa cosa– sciocchina! Figuriamoci se non puoi trovare di meglio da fare che iniziare a pensare!…”
