One morning the Giant was lying awake in bed when he heard some lovely music.
Un mattino il Gigante era sveglio e se ne stava a letto quando sentì una musica incantevole.
It sounded so sweet to his ears that he thought it must be the King’s musicians passing by.
Suonava così dolce ai suoi orecchi che pensò che potessero essere i musici del Re a passare.
It was really only a little linnet singing outside his window, but it was so long since he had heard a bird sing in his garden that it seemed to him to be the most beautiful music in the world.
Veramente era solo un piccolo fanello che cantava fuori dalla finestra, ma era così tanto che non sentiva un uccellino cantare nel suo giardino che gli sembrò essere la musica più bella del mondo.
Then the Hail stopped dancing over his head, and the North Wind ceased roaring, and a delicious perfume came to him through the open casement.
Poi la Grandine smise di danzare sopra la sua testa, e il Vento del Nord cessò di ruggire e un delizioso profumo gli arrivò attraverso la finestra aperta.
‘Credo che la Primavera sia finalmente arrivata,’ disse il Gigante; e saltò giù dal letto e guardò fuori.
What did he see?
Cosa vide?
He saw a most wonderful sight.
Vide un magnifico spettacolo.
Through a little hole in the wall the children had crept in, and they were sitting in the branches of the trees.
Attraverso una pertugio nel muro i bambini erano entrati furtivamente e si erano seduti sui rami degli alberi.
In every tree that he could see there was a little child.
In ogni albero che poteva vedere c’era un piccolo bambino.
And the trees were so glad to have the children back again that they had covered themselves with blossoms, and were waving their arms gently above the children’s heads.
E gli alberi erano così grati che i bambini fossero tornati che si erano coperti di fiori e ondeggiavano delicatamente i loro rami sopra le loro teste.
The birds were flying about and twittering with delight, and the flowers were looking up through the green grass and laughing.
Gli uccellini volavano tutt’intorno e cinguettavano con gioia e i fiori guardavano sù attraverso l’erba verde e ridevano.
It was a lovely scene, only in one corner it was still winter.
Era una scena incantevole, solo in un angolo era ancora inverno.
It was the farthest corner of the garden, and in it was standing a little boy.
Era l’angolo più lontano del giardino, e lì stava un bambino.
He was so small that he could not reach up to the branches of the tree, and he was wandering all round it, crying bitterly.
Era così piccolo che non poteva arrivare ai rami dell’albero e vagava intorno ad esso, piangendo amaramente.
The poor tree was still quite covered with frost and snow, and the North Wind was blowing and roaring above it.
Il povero albero era ancora quasi coperto di ghiaccio e neve e il Vento del Nord soffiava e ruggiva sopra di esso.
‘Climb up! Little boy,’ said the Tree, and it bent its branches down as low as it could; but the boy was too tiny.
‘Sali sù! Ragazzino,’ disse l’Albero e piegò i suoi rami più in basso che potè; ma il bambino era troppo piccolo.
And the Giant’s heart melted as he looked out.
E il cuore del Gigante si intenerì mentre guardava fuori.
‘How selfish I have been!’ he said; ‘now I know why the Spring would not come here.
‘Come sono stato egoista!’ disse; ‘adesso so perché la Primavera non voleva venire qui.
I will put that poor little boy on the top of the tree, and then I will knock down the wall, and my garden shall be the children’s playground for ever and ever.’
Metterò quel ragazzino sulla cima del’albero e poi abbatterò il muro e il mio giardino sarà il parco giochi dei bambini per sempre.’
He was really very sorry for what he had done.
Era davverò molto dispiaciuto per ciò che aveva fatto.
