Non possiamo morire per Berlino
We cannot die for Berlin.

Dopo le elezioni politiche di febbraio sono stato contattato ufficialmente, con una lettera o una mail seguita da una telefonata, dagli ambasciatori dei principali Paesi.
After February’s national elections, I received official communications by letter or email followed by a telephone conversation with the ambassadors of the major countries.

Ho riscontrato da parte loro grande curiosità e interesse per il M5S e forte preoccupazione per il futuro dell’Italia e per l’effetto domino che una crisi del nostro Paese potrebbe comportare.
I observed the great curiosity they had for the M5S and their big worries for the future of Italy and the “domino effect” that a crisis in our country could bring about.

Solo una grande Nazione non ha chiesto un incontro ufficiale: la Germania.
Only one major country didn’t ask for an official meeting: Germany.

Sono convinto che si tratta di una distrazione.
I’m convinced that that’s just because they were distracted.

Non credo sfugga a nessuno che l’Italia di oggi assomigli in modo sempre più smaccato a quella del Seicento, del “Franza o Spagna purché se magna”.
I doubt anyone has missed the point that today’s Italy is ever more similar to Italy in the seventeenth century when the slogan of the time was “Franza o Spagna purché se magna” {Either France or Spain, as long as we can eat}.

Sostituite la Francia e la Spagna con la Germania e gli Stati Uniti e ci ritroviamo nel XXI° secolo.
Substitute “France or Spain” with “Germany or the United States” and we find ourselves in the 21st century.

Il pellegrinaggio ossequioso, subito dopo il loro insediamento, dei nostri primi ministri, come Rigor Montis e Capitan Findus Letta, presso la Merkel (e persino del voglioso ebetino di Firenze, che non vanta alcuna credenziale se non quella di aver vinto alla Ruota della Fortuna) ricordano la ricerca della benedizione papale dei grandi feudatari del medio evo.
The obsequious pilgrimage, made by those just installed as Italian prime minister (for instance Rigor Montis and Captain Findus Letta) to Mrs Merkel (and even by the eager “little idiot” of Florence), the one whose only credentials are that he won the Ruota della Fortuna {Wheel of Fortune} on TV, bring to mind the need experienced by the great Medieval feudal lords to receive the Pope’s blessing.

Gli interessi economici della Germania e quelli dell’Italia non coincidono più da molto tempo, dal nostro ingresso nell’euro, che in realtà è un marco mascherato.
The economic interests of Germany and Italy have no longer coincided for some time, in fact since we joined the euro, that is in fact the Deutsche Mark in disguise.

E’ necessaria una mediazione, un confronto alla pari, per uscire dall’attuale impasse, non la continua genuflessione dei nostri politici.
What’s needed is a mediation, a discussion among equals, to find a way out of the current impasse, and not the continual genuflection of our politicians.

Nell’euro, a queste condizioni, non possiamo più restare se vogliamo mantenere in piedi il nostro sistema produttivo.
We can no longer stay in the euro at these conditions if we want to maintain our system of production.

O si creano gli eurobond, titoli pubblici garantiti dalla BCE, per suddividere il rischio Paese su tutta l’area euro, o si ristruttura il nostro debito pubblico, in sostanza si congela il capitale investito o si rinegoziano gli interessi nel tempo.
Either we create eurobonds public bonds guaranteed by the ECB, to share out the “country risk” across the whole of the euro area, or our public debt has to be restructured. Basically invested capital has to be frozen or interest payments have to be renegotiated to provide a different time frame.

Entrambe queste ipotesi sono viste dalla Germania, che possiede una gran parte dei nostri titoli pubblici, come l’orticaria, ma tertium non datur, non vedo altre possibilità per rimanere nell’euro.
Both these hypotheses are seen by Germany, that holds a large part of our public bonds, like a nettle rash, but tertium non datur {there’s no other solution}. I see no other ways that will allow us to stay in the euro.

Non possiamo morire per Berlino, né fare la fine della Grecia per accontentare gli interessi tedeschi e le ambizioni dei nostri politici.
We cannot die for Berlin, nor can we end up like Greece to please German interests and the ambitions of our politicians.

Primum vivere, con o senza euro.
Primum vivere {first we have to live}, with or without the euro.
