Oggi giorno del dolore e della solidarieta’
Today – a day of suffering and of solidarity

Oggi e’ soltanto il giorno del dolore, della solidarieta’ e anche della vicinanza umana e politica verso le istituzioni, Governo compreso, che si stanno prodigando per venire incontro alla popolazione duramente colpita dal sisma.
Today is just the day of suffering, of solidarity and also of the human and political closeness towards the institutions, including the government, that are rushing to meet the needs of the population that has been so harshly hit by the earthquake.

Esprimo la mia solidarietà ai cittadini abruzzesi, in particolare a quelli aquilani, che oggi vivono un’altra giornata drammatica della loro storia.
I would like to express my solidarity with the citizens of Abruzzo and especially those of L’Aquila, who are today living through another dramatic day in their history.

Questa terra è ad alta attività sismica, come ce ne sono molte in Italia, e non è nuova a questi sconvolgimenti.
This land has high seismic activity, just like many others in Italy and it is not in a new position in relation to these upheavals.

Se denunci sei denigrato, sospeso, denunciato a tua volta e, come avviene negli Stati a diritto compromesso, ne paghi le conseguenze.
If you denounce, you are denigrated, suspended, and you yourself denounced, and, as happens in States where the rule of law has been compromised, you pay the consequences.

E’ accaduto a Giampaolo Giuliani, fisico e tecnico presso il laboratorio nazionale del Gran Sasso.
That happened to Giampaolo Giuliani, a physicist, a technical guy working in the national laboratory of Gran Sasso.

Quella che è accaduta a L’Aquila è una tragedia che poteva essere contenuta.
What happened in L’Aquila is a tragedy that could have been limited.

Giampaolo Giuliani, che aveva preannunciato questo disastro, è stato denunciato per procurato allarme.
Giampaolo Giuliani, who had forecast this disaster, was denounced for causing alarm.

Sarebbe stato il caso di verificarne accuratamente la segnalazione, attivando le precauzioni necessarie per evitare l’irreparabile o, comunque, contenerne le conseguenze.
It should have been the moment for making an accurate check on the warning given, and putting in place necessary precautions to avoid the irreparable or at least to limit the consequences.

L’Italia, come tutti sanno, è un Paese ad altissima attività sismica.
As everyone knows, Italy is a country with very high level of seismic activity.

Tra gli edifici crollati in Abruzzo ci sono anche scuole, diversi palazzi pubblici ed una casa dello studente.
Among the buildings that collapsed in Abruzzo there are even schools, a number of public buildings and a student residence.

Mi domando che senso abbia investire nel progetto del ponte sullo Stretto di Messina, esso stesso in zona ad alto rischio sismico, o discutere sulla costruzione di centrali nucleari sicure, se non si riescono neppure a garantire i requisiti antisismici nelle abitazioni.
I am wondering what’s the point in investing in the project of the “ponte sullo Stretto di Messina” {bridge over the Straits of Messina}, which itself is in a seismic zone, or discussing safe nuclear power stations, if we can’t even succeed in guaranteeing the anti-seismic requirements of homes.

Mi chiedo se, invece di bruciare soldi in inutili opere faraoniche, non sia il caso di restituire i fondi sottratti ai comuni affinché riescano a gestire la manutenzione, il restauro e la messa in sicurezza delle strutture pubbliche e private esistenti.
I am wondering if, rather than burning money for useless Pharaoh-like construction, it might be better to give back the money to the towns so that they can manage to look after the maintenance, the restoration and organisation of the security arrangements needed for the existing public and private structures.
