Prima vennero a prendere i precari e tutti furono contenti.
First they came to get the precarious workers and everyone was happy.

Erano bamboccioni che volevano il posto fisso, le ferie e gli straordinari pagati senza assumersi alcun rischio imprenditoriale.
They were big babies that wanted a fixed job, holidays, paid overtime without accepting any entrepreneurial risk.

Poi vennero a prendere i lavoratori del settore privato che costavano troppo, erano fastidiosi per la Confindustria.
Then they came to get the private sector workers that cost too much, and were annoying for the Confindustria.

Le aziende si spostarono in Paesi senza diritti sindacali, dove si pensa solo a lavorare.
The companies shifted into the countries without Trade Union rights, where they just thought about working.

I lavoratori diventarono cassintegrati o disoccupati.
The workers became laid off or unemployed.

Poi vennero a prendere gli insegnanti delle scuole pubbliche a decine di migliaia, fannulloni pagati per scaldare la cattedra.
Then they came to get tens of thousands of teachers in the public sector, lazybones, paid to keep the teacher’s chair warm.

Nessuno si indignò, in fondo se l’erano cercata.
No one was outraged. Basically, they’d been asking for it.

Poi vennero a prendere tutti i dipendenti della Pubblica Amministrazione.
Then they came to get all the employees of the public authorities.

There was a block on salary increases, the salary for the “thirteenth month” was chopped, as was the final salary lump sum and a lot were sacked.

Non successe nulla.
Nothing happened.

I dipendenti pubblici rimasero in silenzio, si sentivano in colpa per il debito pubblico.
The public employees stayed silent, feeling guilty about the public debt.

Poi vennero a prendere i futuri pensionati.
Then they came to get the future pensioners.

La data della pensione fu spostata di un anno, poi di due, poi di cinque, poi per sempre.
The pension age was shifted upwards by a year, then two, then five then forever.

Nessuno reagì.
No one reacted.

Soprattutto i parlamentari con la pensione (o vitalizio come dice Veltroni) assicurata dopo una legislatura e chi in pensione c’era già.
Especially the parliamentarians with the pension (or annuity as Veltroni calls it) that they’re sure to get after one term of office and anyone already retired gets already.

Mors tua, pensione mea.
“Mors tua, pensione mea.”

Ai politici cominciò a scarseggiare il materiale umano per la macelleria sociale.
For the politicians there’s starting to be a lack of human material for the social butchery.

Ma non si persero d’animo.
But they didn’t get downhearted.

Disponevano ancora di risparmiatori, pensionati e proprietari di case.
They still had the savers, the pensioners and the home owners.

Le categorie già colpite avrebbero apprezzato di non essere le uniche a pagare la crisi.
The people in the categories that have already been affected would not have appreciated being the only ones to pay for the crisis.

Poi vennero a prendere i possessori di titoli di Stato che furono congelati per dieci anni.
Then they came to get the people owning State bonds that were frozen for ten years.

Poi vennero a prendere i risparmiatori con un prelievo dal conto corrente.
Then they came to get the people with savings by taking cash out of current accounts.

Poi tornarono a prendere i risparmiatori con la chiusura temporanea delle banche.
Then they came back to get the people with savings with the temporary closure of the banks.

Poi vennero a prendere i proprietari di case con un nuovo Ici e la patrimoniale sugli immobili.
Then they came to get the home owners with a new “ICI” tax and a patrimony tax on property.

Poi vennero a prendere i pensionati togliendogli la pensione.
Then they came to get the pensioners by taking their pensions away.

Poi, visto che nessuno protestava, dichiararono il default dello Stato.
Then, given that no one protested, they declared the default of the State.

Poi, precari, cassintegrati, disoccupati, insegnanti, dipendenti pubblici, mai pensionati, ex pensionati, risparmiatori, proprietari di casa e, in generale, tutti gli italiani ridotti alla miseria, vennero a prendere i politici.
Then, precarious workers, people who were laid off and unemployed, teachers, public employees, people who have never had a pension, former pensioners, savers, home owners and in general, all the Italians reduced to poverty, came to get the politicians.

Nessuno protestò.
No one protested.
