INTERROGATIVE INDIRETTE  (Reported questions)

To ask (chiedere)
To wonder (chiedersi)
To want to know (voler sapere)
To inquire (informarsi, indagare)

oppure da espressioni tipo:

Can you tell me…(Puoi dirmi…)
Do you know…(Sai…)

"How much will it cost?" "Quanto costerà?"
I want to know how much it will cost.
Voglio sapere quanto costerà.

"What time is it?". "Che ore sono?"
He asked what time it was.
Chiese che ore fossero.

"What time do the shops close?" A che ora chiudono i negozi?
She wanted to know what time the shops closed.
Voleva sapere a che ora chiudevano i negozi.

Se l’interrogativa indiretta non è introdotta da alcun elemento interrogativo (how, where, when, who, what etc…), viene preceduta da if o whether.

Is anybody coming to the party?"
"Verrà qualcuno alla festa?"
I would like to know if / whether anybody is coming to the party.

He asked me whether I wanted to go to the cinema or to the theatre.
I wonder whether he will come or not.
Mi domando se verrà oppure no.
