6 April 2010: the dignity of the people of Abruzzo

Dopo un anno da quel tragico 6 aprile del 2009, L’Aquila trema ancora.
A year after that tragic 6 Aprill 2009, L’Aquila is trembling again.

Un anno fa persero la vita, rimanendo sotto le macerie, 308 persone.
A year ago, 308 people lost their lives under the rubble.

La situazione oggi, in quei luoghi, non e’ assolutamente risolta.
Today, in those places, the situation is absolutely not resolved.

I politici che hanno governato quest’anno sono gli unici responsabili del fatto che la popolazione della città si senta ancora abbandonata, che alcune famiglie vivano ancora in albergo, oppure ospiti da parenti e amici o, peggio ancora, in ripari di fortuna.
The politicians who have governed during this year are the only ones responsible for the fact that the city’s population still feels abandoned, that some families are still living in hotels, or are guests in the homes of relatives and friends, or even worse, are in makeshift shelters.

After the wheelbarrow demonstration, organized by the city’s people to ask for the removal of the rubble from the centre and for the reconstruction of their homes, the governor of the Region promised that the detritus would be removed within 15 days.

Mi chiedo perché abbia aspettato 365 di giorni per dare una risposta a chi lo aveva eletto in un giorno.
I am wondering why he waited for 365 days to give a response to those who elected him in a day.

A L’Aquila, i familiari delle vittime ed i semplici cittadini, hanno visto sfilare i potenti della Terra, durante il G8, mentre loro mangiavano lenticchie nelle tendopoli.
In L’Aquila, the families of the victims and the ordinary citizens, have seen the powerful people of the earth file by during the G8, while they were eating lentils in the big tents.

Alcuni fortunati hanno ricevuto abitazioni prefabbricate e provvisorie, ad altri è stata avanzata l’indecente offerta di una vacanza in crociera per consolarsi di un lutto in famiglia, o di aver perso tutti i ricordi di una vita in un sol colpo.
Some lucky ones have received prefabricated and temporary homes, others have received the indecent offer of a holiday on a cruise ship to console them for a death in the family, or for having lost all the mementos of a lifetime in a single blow.

Dopo aver sopportato tutto questo, è arrivato anche il fardello inaccettabile delle conversazioni intercettate e delle risate degli sciacalli della ricostruzione, che abbiamo letto e ascoltato appena un mese fa.
After putting up with all of this, they’ve also seen the arrival of the unacceptable burden of wiretapped conversations and the laughter of the jackals of reconstruction that we read and listened to a month ago.

Credo che gli aquilani meritino molto di più.
I believe that the people of L’Aquila deserve much more.

Hanno avuto sempre un grande coraggio e una grande dignità che riemergono a distanza di un anno con manifestazioni e sit-in davanti al Parlamento.
They have always had such courage and great dignity that comes back after a year with demonstrations and sit-ins in front of Parliament.

Non avrei mai immaginato che dopo il terremoto abruzzese si continuasse a parlare nelle stanze del governo di investimenti inutili e di cattedrali nel deserto, quando a migliaia di cittadini non è stato restituito un tetto sotto cui dormire, eppure il progetto del Ponte di Messina e molte altre inutilità sono ancora lì e non verranno accantonati.
I would never have imagined that after the earthquake in Abruzzo they would continue to be talking within government circles of useless investments and cathedrals in the desert, while thousands of citizens have not been given back a roof under which they can sleep, and yet the Messina Bridge project and many other useless things are still there and will not be shelved.

Ma i cittadini, messi di fronte alla realtà e quando sono nelle condizioni di essere informati, sanno scegliere e distinguere il bene dal male.
But the citizens, faced with the reality and when they are in the position to be informed, know how to distinguish between good and evil.

Lo dimostrano le elezioni di marzo nella provincia de L’Aquila.
This is demonstrated by the March elections in the province of L’Aquila.

Se è vero, infatti, che il centrodestra ha vinto con uno scarto di +8% sul centrosinistra nelle aree non colpite dal terremoto, è altrettanto innegabile che a L’Aquila Berlusconi ha perso con oltre 14 punti di scarto rispetto al centrosinistra.
In fact, if it is true that the Centre Right won with a margin of +8% over the Centre Left in the areas hit by the earthquake, it is just as undeniable that at L’Aquila, Berlusconi lost with a margin of more than 14 points in relation to the Centre Left.

Questo risultato non è stato solo una valutazione sull’operato locale, ma è anche una bocciatura del governo nazionale e della gestione Bertolaso.
This result was not just an evaluation of the local level activity, but it is also a condemnation of the national government and of the management by Bertolaso.

E da questi numeri si evince anche che coloro che hanno visto e toccato con mano le conseguenze del terremoto, sono consapevoli di come il governo abbia affrontato la tragedia abruzzese.
It is from these numbers that you also can clearly demonstrate that those who saw and touched with their own hands the consequences of the earthquake, are aware how the government tackled the tragedy in Abruzzo.

Coloro, invece, che il terremoto lo hanno visto e ascoltato dagli spot di Fede e Minzolini, giacciono ancora sotto l’ipnosi del ‘Pifferaio magico’.
On the other hand, those who saw and heard about the earthquake from the glimpses offered by Fede and Minzolini, are still subject to the hypnosis of the ’Pied Piper of Hamelin’.

Un augurio a tutti i cittadini colpiti dalla sciagura di quel 6 aprile 2009, affinché possano tornare nelle loro case e loro antica città, e non in una new town, affinché venga restituita loro una normale quotidianità, affinché possano recuperare al più presto i propri ricordi rimasti sotto cumuli di macerie, dai quali hanno salvato la cosa più importante: la dignità.
Best wishes to all the citizens hit by the disaster of 6 April 2009. I hope that they can return to their homes and their ancient city, and not to a ‘new town’, and that they will have a normal daily life, and that as soon as possible they can recover their own things imbued with memories that have stayed under the pile of rubble, from which they have saved the most important thing: their dignity.
