Europe’s cultural and linguistic diversity is a tremendous asset, but it also presents challenges.
La diversità culturale e linguistica dell’Europa rappresenta un patrimonio preziosissimo, ma presenta anche una serie di problemi.
For example, the European Union has 23 official languages, around 60 regional and minority languages, and uses 3 alphabets (Latin, Cyrillic and Greek).
L’Unione europea ha, ad esempio, 23 lingue ufficiali, circa 60 lingue regionali e/o parlate da minoranze e usa 3 alfabeti (latino, cirillico e greco).
Every year, numerous new European writers get their works published nationally but only a few of them see their books translated into another European language which can potentially help them reach the 550 million people living within the EU.
Ogni anno, numerosi autori nuovi europei pubblicano le loro opere nei rispettivi paesi ma solo alcune di esse saranno tradotte in un’altra lingua europea ed essere così aiutate a raggiungere i 550 milioni di lettori potenziali che vivono nella UE.
The EU Culture Programme also offers financial support for the translation of literary works.
