Che fine ha fatto l’Europa?

E’ mai esistita?
Has it ever existed?

In principio fu l’euro e in seguito non c’è stato altro.
In the beginning there was the euro and after that nothing has happened.

Se l’Europa è solo una moneta, in assenza di questa non esiste neppure l’Europa.
If Europe is just a currency, in its absence Europe doesn’t even exist.

Dal 2008, l’anno della crisi, negli incontri europei si discute di debito pubblico, spread tra i diversi titoli, tenuta delle banche, default e triple A.
Since 2008, the year of the crisis, in the European meetings they have discussed the public debt, the ‘spread’ for the different shares, held by the banks, default and a triple A rating.

L’Unione Bancaria Europea si è sostituita nell’immaginario all’Unione Europea.
The European Banking Union has got substituted in people’s imagination with the actual European Union.

Non c’è traccia di una politica estera comune.
There’s no trace of a common foreign policy.

Il Mediterraneo è in fiamme e l’Europa è muta, come sempre in questi casi.

Il primo nome che viene in mente ai più è Angela Merkel, che non ha nessun incarico europeo.

L’identificazione Europa-Germania è però nei fatti.
However the identification of Europe-Germany lies in the facts.

Senza la Germania, questa Europa, tenuta in piedi dall’economia tedesca, svanirebbe.
Without Germany, this Europe held up by the German economy, would disappear.

Eppure si allarga, si allunga sempre più, come un palloncino, siamo arrivati a 27 Stati, ognuno dei quali per garantirsi il futuro dovrebbe correre come la Germania o rischiare di perdere la sovranità nazionale, dopo quella monetaria, come sta per accadere a Grecia e Irlanda.
And yet it is getting wider, it is getting ever longer, like a blown-up balloon, we have got to 27 states, each of which in order to guarantee its future, has to run like Germany or risk losing national sovereignty, after monetary sovereignty, as is happening in Greece and Ireland.

“Se stiamo insieme ci sarà un perché”, forse è il caso di trovarlo alla svelta prima del “Rompete le righe”.
“If we are together, there’ll be a reason”. Perhaps we need to hurry up and find the reason before we get the order to “Break ranks”.
