Uno su quattro non ce la fa.
One in four doesn’t make it.

Il 24.5% delle famiglie italiane è a rischio povertà.
24.5% of Italian families are at risk of poverty.

Non riesce a pagare l’affitto, il mutuo, non usa il riscaldamento, non apre neppure le bollette del gas e della luce.
They don’t manage to pay the rent, the mortgage. They don’t use heating.They don’t even open the gas or electricity bills.

Mangia ancora, ma sempre più spesso fa la fila alla Caritas.
They still eat, but ever more frequently they are queueing up at the Caritas soup kitchen.

Qualcuno si azzarda a chiedere l’elemosina, ma lo fa quasi chiedendo scusa.
Some have a go at begging but they are almost excusing themselves at the same time.

Abbassa gli occhi come un cane bastonato.
They lower their eyes like a beaten dog.

La disoccupazione colpisce soprattutto i ragazzi che lasciano il Paese appena possono.
Unemployment is above all something that especially hits the youngsters that leave the country as soon as they can.

Nel Sud l’emigrazione è diventata l’unica possibilità, come nel dopoguerra.
In the South, emigration has become the only possibility, just like after the war.

>>> Ci stiamo abituando a questa realtà come se non ci riguardasse.
We are getting used to this reality as though it didn’t relate to us.

Una malattia che colpisce sempre gli altri, di cui parlare sottovoce con compatimento.
An illness that always affects the others, that you have to talk about quietly with condescension.

“E’ fallito, eppure stava così bene”, oppure con una punta di critica “Se volesse troverebbe un lavoro” o con sicumera “A noi non può succedere”.
“He’s gone bust and yet he was doing so well.”, or with a barb of criticism “If he wanted to, he could find a job” or with arrogance “This couldn’t happen to us ”

Stiamo diventando una Nazione di pezzenti e, paradossalmente, la cosa non ci riguarda.
We are becoming a nation of wretches and paradoxically it’s nothing to do with us.

Almeno fino a quando non tocca a noi.
At least until it does come round to us.

Un quarto degli italiani è un numero colossale, pari a quindici milioni di persone, ed è in aumento.
A quarter of Italians is a colossal number, equal to fifteen million people, and it’s growing.

A quanti potremo arrivare?
How many of us will it grow to?

Un tempo avevamo panem et circences, ora solo i circences con il calcio.
Once upon a time we had “panem et circences” {bread and circuses}, now we just have circences with football.

Non possiamo trasformare l’Italia in una società a due livelli, chi mangia e chi no.
We cannot transform Italy into a two level society: those who eat and those who don’t.

Dovremmo mangiare tutti un po’ meno e stringere la cinghia.
We all need to eat a bit less and tighten our belts.

L’unica misura mai nominata dal governo Monti è stata la patrimoniale, una bestemmia per un banchiere, colpisce i ricchi che “sono tristi se noi piangiam”, come cantava Jannacci.
The only measure that has never been mentioned by the Monti government is the “patrimonial”, a blasphemy for a banker, it hits the rich who “sono tristi se noi piangiam” {are sad if we cry} as Jannacci sang.

Invece andrebbe proposta per la creazione di un fondo destinato al reddito di cittadinanza uguale per tutti i disoccupati per soddisfare i bisogni primari, dalla casa alla spesa.
Instead what needs proposing is the creation of a fund for a citizen’s income that’s equal for everyone who’s unemployed to cover basic needs, from housing to food shopping.

Insieme al reddito per cittadinanza andrebbero creati dei veri centri di collocamento che propongano attività che se rifiutate farebbero decadere l’erogazione del reddito.
Together with a citizen’s income there should be the creation of true job centres that offer a job and if you turn it down that means you would lose out on the income.

Nessuno può essere lasciato indietro.
No one can be left behind.
