Small enterprises: Shift to green economy underway, but not at full speed yet

Brussels, 27 March 2012- According to the Eurobarometer survey on “SMEs, resource efficiency and green markets” published today, 37% of EU SMEs have at least one full or part-time green employee.
Bruxelles, 27 marzo 2012.- Secondo l’indagine Eurobarometro “SMEs, resource efficiency and green markets” (Le PMI, efficienza nell’uso delle risorse e mercati verdi) pubblicata oggi, il 37% delle PMI dell’UE ha almeno un dipendente “verde” a tempo pieno o part-time.
Green jobs are largely created in SMEs as opposed to large firms:
I posti di lavoro “verdi” sono creati essenzialmente nelle PMI piuttosto che nelle grandi imprese:
In 2012, 1 in 8 employees of small and medium-sized firms had a green job or almost 13% of all SME jobs (in large firms it was only 1 in 33 equivalent to 3% of all large company jobs).
nel 2012, nelle piccole e medie imprese un lavoratore su otto aveva un posto di lavoro “verde” il che corrisponde a quasi il 13% di tutti i posti di lavoro nelle PMI (nelle grandi imprese il dato è di un lavoratore verde soltanto su 33, pari al 3% dell’occupazione nelle grandi imprese).
Green jobs in SMEs are also estimated to expand dynamically with a rate of 35% in the next 2 years.
Si stima inoltre che i posti di lavoro “verdi” nelle PMI cresceranno in modo dinamico a un tasso del 35% nel prossimo biennio.
The Eurobarometer survey also reveals other sources of untapped potential which could be used by SMEs.
L’indagine Eurobarometro rivela inoltre che vi sono altre potenzialità non sfruttate che potrebbero essere usate dalle PMI.
For example, less than a quarter of SMEs take advantage of the single market for green products or services.
Ad esempio, meno di un quarto delle PMI sfrutta il mercato unico per i prodotti o servizi verdi.
>>> Bureaucracy is considered as one of the obstacles: 20% of SMEs says that it would be easier to do green investments if cross-border administrative and legal procedures were not so complex.
La burocrazia è ritenuta uno degli ostacoli: il 20% delle PMI dichiara che sarebbe più facile effettuare investimenti verdi se le procedure amministrative e legali transfrontaliere non fossero così complesse.
SMEs in green industries are also maturing.

Three in five (61%) SMEs selling green products or services have been active in green markets for more than three years compared to 52% in the US.
Delle PMI che vendono prodotti o servizi verdi tre su cinque (61%) sono attive sui mercati verdi da più di tre anni rispetto al 52% negli USA.
Food and beverages (25%) and electronic and mechanical machinery and equipment (23%) are the most commonly sold green products and services by SMEs in the EU.
Gli alimenti e le bevande (25%) e l’elettronica e le macchine e attrezzature meccaniche (23%) sono i prodotti e servizi verdi maggiormente venduti nell’UE dalle PMI.
European Commission Vice-President Antonio Tajani, responsible for Industry and Entrepreneurship unveiling today the Eurobarometer results said:

“I am happy to see that SMEs are taking on this huge untapped potential which will pay off with more innovation, more competitive SMEs and more jobs.

However, there is still a lot of work to do.
Resta però ancora molto da fare.
Only very few European SMEs extend their green business to foreign markets.
Soltanto pochissime PMI europee estendono le loro attività verdi ai mercati esteri.
Knowing that the EU makes up roughly one third of the world market for environmental industries this reveals a huge potential for SMEs to grow.”
