I Dodo
The Dodos

È sempre più estraniante guardare cicciobombi e labbra turgide, megafoni dei partiti nelle televisioni nazionali, nei telegiornali, nei talk show.
It’s getting more alienating to look at “cicciobombi” and “labbra turgide”, megaphones of the parties on national TV channels, on the TV News, and on the talk shows.

Provocano un senso di piccole cose di pessimo gusto, richiamano il profumo di fiori marci, l’odore pungente dei cespugli di bosso lungo i vialetti dei cimiteri.
They provoke a sense of small things that are in really bad taste. They call to mind the perfume of rotten flowers, the sharp stink of boxwood lining the avenues of the cemeteries.

Le sagome che si agitano dietro lo schermo con l’estrema vitalità che talvolta precede le ultime ore di vita rammentano il dodo, l’uccello estinto, o gli ultimi giapponesi che combattevano a guerra finita in qualche atollo del Pacifico dopo il 1945.
The shapes that jitter around behind the screen with the extreme vitality that at times precedes the final hours of life, remind you of the dodo, the extinct bird, or the last few Japanese that went on fighting after the end of the war in 1945 in some atoll in the Pacific.

Il loro lavoro di portavoci e anfitrioni, finora, lo hanno svolto egregiamente, hanno trasformato personaggi come Lupi, Formigoni, Alfano, Veltroni, Alemanno, Fini in giganti della politica.
Up until now, they have carried out their role as spokespersons and amphitryons, very well. They have transformed characters like Lupi, Formigoni, Alfano, Veltroni, Alemanno, and Fini into giants of the political scene.

Li hanno tenuti in vita.
They have kept them alive.

In caso di difficoltà sono puntualmente accorsi, premurosi come crocerossine, a portargli la flebo.
At times of difficulty, they have carefully rushed in, as attentive as Red Cross workers, to bring them the intravenous drip.

The parties are now dying. They are falling like autumn leaves.

I conduttori sono animali domestici (pappagalli?) dimenticati dal padrone dopo un trasloco.
The TV hosts are pet animals (parrots?) forgotten by their owners after moving house.

I loro studi, dove hanno manipolato per decenni l’opinione pubblica, sono spogli, tristi.
Their workspaces, where for decades they have manipulated public opinion, are bare and sad.

I partiti vi inviano figure di secondo piano, per fare presenza.
The parties send them second rate characters to provide a presence.

I conduttori sono costretti a intervistarsi tra di loro, a scambiarsi opinioni di cui non frega niente a nessuno.
The TV hosts are obliged to interview each other and to share the opinions that are of no interest to anyone.

Hanno inventato l’informazione a ciclo chiuso.
They have invented closed circuit information.

– nessun canale televisivo con copertura nazionale può essere posseduto a maggioranza da alcun soggetto privato, l’azionariato deve essere diffuso con proprietà massima del 10%

– le frequenze televisive vanno assegnate attraverso un’asta pubblica ogni cinque anni

– abolizione della legge del governo D’Alema che richiede un contributo dell’uno per cento sui ricavi agli assegnatari di frequenze televisive
– abolition of the law brought in by the D’Alema government that requires a one per cent contribution on the receipts of those to whom the TV frequencies are assigned

– vendita ad azionariato diffuso, con proprietà massima del 10%, di due canali televisivi pubblici
– sale of two public TV channels to a broad base of shareholders, with a maximum holding of 10%

– un solo canale televisivo pubblico, senza pubblicità, informativo e culturale,indipendente dai partiti
– a single public TV channel that is independent of the parties, without advertising, providing information and cultural programmes

– abolizione della legge Gasparri.
– abolition of the Gasparri law.

Loro non si arrenderanno mai (ma gli conviene?).
They will never give up (but is it in their interests?).
